For the last year or so I have had a huge problem. You know the south park show? That episode where one of the kids wakes up one day and everything sounds like farts. TV, Radio, Movies and so on. That about sums me up. I can't remember the last new movie I really enjoyed watching since forever.

Watched the original Starwars last night. Reminds me of when I was young watching the trilogy on repeat whenever I could. But what really stuck with me was seeing how they made it. The models, the costumes, the sets, the puppets and so on.

Well this short video reminded me of that:

and honestly I am very hyped for this movie. I haven't felt anything for a movie or show in a long time and honestly I hope this new Starwars film changes that!

Anybody catch something in the new footage that has them hyped (or disappointing?)

A few things I noticed:

The bad guy. Unlike the cold and calculating Darth Vader we had originally, we now have a eager looking killer. This guy moves with hate and anger. In stark contrast darth Vader sort of bottled his anger and released it rarely. A cool new bad guy in my opinion. Still bad looking, but a different style of bad assery.

The sets. I have always loved the dirty sets in the original trilogy. Looks exactly the same here. HOWEVER like the originals the Empire still have their stupidly clean and shiny look.

Aliens. These are the aliens I liked in Starwars, the weird looking hairy creatures. The newer films went for the smooth alien look for too many things in my opinion. The change is noticeable too. While the original triligoy was not all hairy beast like aliens, it did have a nice mix. Something the Prequels did not have in my opinion.

Empire Brutality. Looking at the rubble and the flame thrower, I feel like we might see some Empire Brutality here. A reason beyond implication (and blowing up a planet) for us to see the Empire as evil. Now I hope they don't go full hunger games crap with stupidly evil empire but I do hope to see some evil.

Anyway, hype is building up. I have never been interested in the games (outside of battlefront but there was a lot I hated about them too), books, comics or shows. But the Trilogy (and to an extent the prequels as a child, though not so much these days) always stuck in my mind as the coolest non historical films I have ever seen. Empire strikes back tonight!

The amount of detail put in is fairly incredible, hopefully it all hangs together as a story and experience and not a pewpew michael bay dumbdown job.

The moving Millenium Falcon cockpit simulator did it for me. Nice added touch to what is presumably the desert dogfight we've seen in the trailers.

I really appreciate the amount of physical effects we're seeing, such as the puppets and costumes, rather than depending on CGI.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

It does take me back to being 9 and seeing the first film. Loving it!

Just one question though... "why did George never, ever realise that he was doing it so wrong with episodes 1,2 & 3 ?"

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Because he owned it all. Because he was the storied 'genius' that was solely responsible for Star Wars being a thing, and he had surrounded himself with a cadre of people that simply chanted 'yes George, that sounds like a great idea.' There was no one to tell him no.

Tried to do it all himself. I maintain he's still good at creating the basic plot (the prequel trilogy was pretty good in that aspect), but doesn't have the talent (anymore) to pull it together via the script and direction.

I think 3D printing has found another niche. Looks like computer imaging isn't out of a job in the new Star Wars, they're just used for something else,

Exactly. George Lucas is a great "idea-person." He can write a good story, he can come up with a great vision. But he can't write an actual script that's worth a damn.

This looks like it will be good.

I will remain cautiously optimistic until I see it though.

Would rather go in not expecting much, and be dazzled, than expect awesomeness and be dissapoint.

It's about time somebody realized that modern technology is not just great CGI. All the advances in the last thirty years can be used to make practical effects so much more awesome.

The end of the special edition of Return of the Jedi sees many planets in the Star Wars galaxy celebrating the fall of the Empire. But Aftermath, a new novel by Chuck Wendig, is going to show us what happened next according to Disney’s new canon—and it’s not the happy ending we thought it was.

Aftermath is one of the first post-Return of the Jedi, pre-Force Awakens tie-ins that are part of Disney’s new “Journey to The Force Awakens” plan to flesh out the 30 years between Episodes VI and VII in their new canon. While we’ve had a few hints and teases about the book—including the fact that it establishes the old-Expanded Universe idea of the New Republic being set up in the wake of the Emperor’s death—but Entertainment Weekly have now released an extensive excerpt from the novel’s opening that tells us pretty much what happened immediately after those celebrating crowds on Coruscant brought down the statue of the Emperor at the end of Jedi.

Turns out the Empire doesn’t take too kindly to jubilant civil disobedience:

Chains rattle as they lash the neck of Emperor Palpatine. Ropes follow suit—lassos looping around the statue’s middle. The mad cheers of the crowd as they pull, and pull, and pull. Disappointed groans as the stone fixture refuses to budge. But then someone whips the chains around the back ends of a couple of heavy-gauge speeders, and then engines warble and hum to life—the speeders gun it and again the crowd pulls—

The sound like a giant bone breaking.

A fracture appears at the base of the statue.

More cheering. Yelling. And—

Applause as it comes crashing down.

The head of the statue snaps off, goes rolling and crashing into a fountain. Dark water splashes. The crowd laughs.

And then: The whooping of klaxons. Red lights strobe. Three airspeeders swoop down from the traffic lanes above—Imperial police. Red-and- black helmets. The glow of their lights reflected back in their helmets.

There comes no warning. No demand to stand down.

The laser cannons at the fore of each airspeeder open fire. Red bolts sear the air. The crowd is cut apart. Bodies dropped and stitched with fire.

But still, those gathered are not cowed. They are no longer a crowd. Now they are a mob. They start picking up hunks of the Palpatine statue and lobbing them up at the airspeeders. One of the speeders swings to the side to avoid an incoming chunk of stone—and it bumps another speeder, interrupting its fire. Coruscanti citizens climb up the stone spire behind both speeders—a spire on which are written the Imperial values of order, control, and the rule of law—and begin jumping onto the police cruisers. One helmeted cop is flung from his vehicle. The other crawls out onto the hood of his speeder, opening fire with a pair of blasters—just as a hunk of stone cracks him in the helmet, knocking him to the ground.

The other two airspeeders lift higher and keep firing.
There’s much more at the link below, but basically Return of the Jedi’s happy ending now manages to stay happy for... like, about five seconds maybe? Which is kind of a bummer, but I guess we need a reason for the Rebels and the Empire to shed their names and go at it again in The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: Aftermath will be out on September 4th, which might as well be renamed as “Global Give All Your Money To Disney Day” at this point.

Awesome, as I mentioned in OP that's what we need, to see the Empire doing their thing for once.

Star Wars fans make 40k "fans" look like complete and utter noobs when it comes to one-eyed-buy-anything-ness.

That said, Like a visitor to Mos Eisley, I will remain cautious about this film. It looks good so far, but time will tell.

(The teaser and trailer for Ep1 looked brilliant - but then the actual film let the team down ... )
