MMOs in general that I've tried:

World of WarCraft
Everquest
Eve: Online
DC Universe
Guild Wars 2
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Silk Road Online
Rift

MMOs I'm interested in and am wondering what some folks think:

Tera
Aion

Any others that you can suggest? (I mostly mentioned RPGs because that's where I have most experience on but if you have a suggestion for another type of MMO that would be welcome as well)

Aion got very tedious after about lvl 20 or me. It definitely has a unique aesthetic and "look" to it and the abilities and flying mechanic work up until a point but I'd rate it as one of the lower tier mmos I've tried - warcraft, GW2 and the defunct warhammr being higher tiers.

Havent played tera.

Tera is pretty awesome, actually. The action-MMO genre is breathing new life into MMOs in general, and Tera is one of the best in the business in that regard.

While the storyline and quests are nothing to write home about, the fact that every attack, every dodge, every block is based on you, the player's, skill-level, reflexes and timing, rather than stats and dice-rolls done by the server means that you progress in the game as quickly (or not) as you are capable of.

The fact that it's also chockful of cake, of both the cheese and beef varieties, doesn't hurt. Just don't trust the Elin, they are traps.

Is it sort of like mount n balde then? i.e. a real time reflex based mechanic? Interesting, I can only recall age of conan trying something similar in the bigger mmos.

I was sucked into star track online for awhile. It's rather neat in some spaces and just needs some pol.. A complete tear down and rebuild in order to be really good.

I am going to try out defiance rather soon. As in when it finishes downloading. Looks neat.

Though the big problem with mmos, you played one then you played them all. Just pick the one with the most scantly clad elf on the box art and play that

Yes. The attack mechanics are all based on where your crosshair is pointing (whether you're a ranged class or not) and whether or not there's a viable target under that crosshair and within range when you launch your attacks.

Same with dodging... don't be in the spot the mob is going to hit when the attack lands (or, for the classes with a Block ability, better have your guard up).

Have you tried Marvel Heroes: 2015 - it's from David Brevik who was the main guy behind Diablo I and Diablo II.

As for how it plays? Well... It pretty much is Diablo II with superheroes.

Specifically, a choice of 46 of them.

I've put some money into it but it's basically entirely free to play. The only sort of main things you'd be feeling like you 'need' to spend money on is visual things (alternate costumes) and, if you're a packrat, more storage space.

Basically, you can play any character you want up to level 10 (out of 60). You then unlock one of your choices and play through the game with them. As you play, you accumulate points towards getting another hero and so on and so on... - They all play rather differently too, which is awesome considering there's so many.

Currently, my heroes are Rogue, Scarlet Witch and Iron Man,

I tried it once... I couldn't really get into it. I may have to give it another go. I really don't remember what it was I didn't like.

Forgot about Star Trek Online. I actually really liked the ship stuff. The ground stuff I couldn't really get into for some reason. There was something about it that didn't feel fleshed out.

I did try Marvel Heroes and it was pretty enjoyable. Maybe I'll look into investing some time on that.

This. Haven't played the game myself, but everything I've heard about the game is that it's fantastic, especially the community. Tolkien fans love their lore, so they try to make accurate, fitting characters. Thus you don't see somebody named MLGXXXPROSNIPESOMG running around and breaking your immersion.

LOTRO is tedious though. At least I found it that way.

Unless you're a weeb, I'd advise against Tera. It has a specific demographic and it's designed from the ground up to appeal to that demographic. Hence a race of pint sized anthro pandas and loli Catgirls with massive scythes.

At the end of the day, it depends on your interests. MMOs are dime a dozen nowadays, and they encompass a lot of genres. I could say "Don't play LOTRO/Tera/Aion/TOR. It's really bad." and be countered with "No it isn't.". It'd be easier if you listed what you look for in an MMO to narrow it down.

Can't really say for sure what I'm looking for. Maybe if I figure that out it'll make things a little easier.

As for Tera, I'll still try it out. I actually don't mind the art direction/designs. Maybe I'm a weeb haha.

You can also try Neverwinter Online. I played it a bit on my Xbox, and it's pretty fun I think.

Nah, I had a name super similar to that when I played.

Specifically to troll tolkien fans.

EDIT- I echo darkavenger's caution regarding Tera. Definitely check out some youtube videos of it first to make sure the art style appeals to you. I was interested in the combat style as well but watching videos and seeing the world's infested with bikini-clad rabbit-eared loli midgets and pandas wielding giant axes and scythes kind of turned me off. No judgement on the folks that enjoy that stuff, but it killed my immersion.

Double EDIT- Have you tried Neverwinter? It's fairly popular, and I put about 10 hours or so into it and had no complaints. MMO's just aren't really my thing in general.

T-T-T-TRRRRRRRIPLE EDIT- Give Vindictus a try if you want a real-time action MMO.

Neverwinter is pretty good, and has a nice bit of content to do. If I wasn't back on the Runescape grind, I'd probably be playing that, to be honest.

The thing about Tera is, despite its reputation for some of the most scantily clad outfits in a genre already crawling in cantily clad, it's combat system is actually pretty good, and the class system fairly engaging with a great deal of variety, all backed with a pretty good F2P model. The downside (real downside mind you) is that the game is repetitive as feth. What you do at level 1, you will be doing the entire game. The dungeons start feeling more and more like the same thing with a different skin, and the questing system is almost 100% go kill X quests backed with weak story content. So unless you really like the combat, you're unlikely to really get much from Tera. And I mean really like the combat. Bright side, it's free. So not really much to lose just playing the game till you decide you don't like it or you get bored.

My thoughts;

STO

I actually do really like this game. Ignore the bland and boring and utterly repetitive and time gated content the devs put out. Just play the player generated content. Jokes about bad fan fiction aside, the player base has put out some stellar content with the tools the devs gave them, and it's pretty damn fun! The strength of the game is as a personal role playing experience, not its group or PvP content both of which are horribly unbalanced or lackluster.

However be warned, there is a reason I just can't play this game anymore. It isn't pay to win, but most of the funnest and most engaging ships in the game are locked in chests you need a store item to open. The amount of ships they release now readily available without mountains of grinding or paying real money are very limited both in number and play style. The game basically exists for people who play very casually, or are major whales. There is no middle ground.

EvE is a blast, if you have time to dedicate to it - also the F2P lasts for 15 days and locks you from doing anything outside of Cruiser-size hulls (once you skull up for them).

Cool thing is that the game doesn't suffer from the P2W model that some MMO's suffer from - in fact, if you're good enough, you only have to pay for the first month with actual cash - after that, if you're making enough in-game money you can buy monthly subs that way.

Frankly, don't play F2P MMOs. I've been through a lot and in most of them, you soon meet a paywall. PvP is unplayable as a non-premium customer. I wanted to like Tera, but I threw up in my mouth when I saw their character design. No, thanks, I don't want to play a MMO aimed at pedophiles.

EVE requires HOURS over HOURS over YEARS to play. Unless you have an extreme buttload of time to spend, nothing for ya. Plus it's not F2P.

Elder Scrolls Tamriel Unlimited might be worth a shot, it's B2P.

Now, now, there's a big difference between "pedophile" and "Loli fan"... Always painful when I read stuff like that.

ANYWAY!

Tera is pretty fun. The only reason I gave it up was because I was playing solo and I didn't play that much time daily so it was near impossible to make decent progress but the combat is very, very, fun, frenetic, fast and interactive. The whole active combat turns the MMO into an action RPG. It was really enjoyable to see my dual wielding loli jumping around destroying all kinds of evil fiends.

The Secret World is AMAZING for the lore / quests, not much for combat. The investigation quests are incredibly fulfilling if you do them correctly, only search for the solution as a last resort. You have to do some investigation using google, you even have a web-browser in-game for that purpose, they are that tough. One of them required me to search for passages in bible, for the work of a certain man, how to read music sheets. Really tough, but man, do you feel good when you nail it.

Also, I've heard nothing but good things about SWTOR after it went F2P.

Yeah, the combat mechanics of TSW, frankly, suck. The world-building, writing and lore is a lot of fun, though.

Yes, although you have to manually dodge attacks so combat isn't as static as usual.
