I'm new to KoW, just finished reading the rules yesterday, and need some guidance on army list building. What are the rules for building an army list? I'm coming over from Warhammer Fantasy. I read the rules that stated you can take regiments and then up to two troops and either one Hero or War Machine, similar type rules for horde. I know what a regiment and horde unit is in KoW, but I don't see where there are troops, unless that is everything that is not a Hero or Warmachine. But what does it mean you take two troops for each regiment. Just little confused on what the restrictions are.

Troops are 10 models for infantry and 5 for cavalry.
I've not looked at the sample army lists so don't know if they are missing the troop options.
Take a look at the full lists here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nhZLDFOHUXC2MCA6NwYQWr0HF2mSyvEWIlNH4oCtBeQ/htmlview#gid=1243412207

So based on the rules does this mean for ever unit of 20 you can take up to two units of 10 and a Hero or Warmachine? Am I reading that right?

Is there a limit on how may Magic Items you can take? Like a % of your total army? Only one of each item? This will help out a lot.
p.s.
I think it is fantastic that you post on the forums. It's nice to see so much interaction.

I can still remember when a box of 30 Space Marines was $30.00. Now THAT'S old school! In fact, I started playing in the Rogue Trader days...yes, I am that old. Played Warhammer Fantasy for years before Rogue Trader even came out...

Magic items are limited to one of each for an army. War machines can't take them. Nor can monsters unless they are heroes. Living legends (units with a limit of one per army) also can't take them.

As Nick says, and in addition to not duplicating, a unit can only take one item. Automatically Appended Next Post: CaptainLoken wrote:Is there a limit on how may Magic Items you can take? Like a % of your total army? Only one of each item? This will help out a lot.

There's no % but you'll eventually settle on something yourself and it'll be fairly low. Magic artefacts are good but not overpowered buffs and buying too many can mean losing out on another unit which might be better overall. It's a balancing game.
I don't work for Mantic (not employed by them anyway!) so I'm just posting as a gamer like you who happens to be more involved than normal

The way that the asterisk units is explained is so confusing, like it was written backwards or something.
This is how I would explain it:
Fantasy armies are expected to be formed around big units--the regiment and horde sized units. So you can field as many of those as you afford the points for units.
Then, for each regiment or horde sized unit, you can include a number of the smaller "troop" sized units or heroes, war machines, and monsters. Note that units listed with an asterisk (like the Imps in the Forces of the Abyss) always count as "Troop" sized as far as army construction is concerned, even if you're fielding a regiment or horde sized unit.
So, looking at the Undead army list, if you had a pile of 80 ghoul models in your apartment, here are some of the ways you could organize those models...
300 Point army:
- Ghoul Horde (150 points)
- Ghoul Horde (150 points)
330 point army:
- Ghoul Horde (150 points)
- Ghoul Regiment (90 points)
- Ghoul Regiment (90 points)
370 point army:
- Ghoul Horde (150 points)
- Ghoul Regiment (90 points)
- Ghoul Troop (65 points)
- Ghoul Troop (65 points)
(The horde unlocks four troops, and the regiment unlocks two troops, if you want to go get more models. But 80 models only goes so far unless you pad your units. )
410 point army:
- Ghoul Horde (150 points)
- Ghoul Troop (65 points)
- Ghoul Troop (65 points)
- Ghoul Troop (65 points)
- Ghoul Troop (65 points)
Each of those is still 80 ghoul models, arranged in different sized blocks.

I don't know how up to date it is, since the v2 full rules PDF just got released to KS backers yesterday, but when I play v1 I always use

and the V2 site is: http://kow2.easyarmy.com/

Are the rules on the MANTIC website the most up to date? I'm new to the game but I don't see magic items in the rulebook or the army books, I'm looking at the Abyssal Dwarves. Nor do I see point costs for banners and musicians.

The rules on the site are up to date, but the free core pdf does not contain magic items- they are in the rulebook that you actually pay for.
One of Dakka's posters has helpfully made a pdf with the items though:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/656049.page
The free lists are likewise taster lists, the book contains all the units available for each army.
This is a bit confusing and a lot of people are nagging Mantic to fix it right now.

There are no banners/musicians anymore. If you're reading rules for them it means you're on the now out-dated Version 1 rules. As others have said the 2nd Edition rules, and partial army lists are up now, and full lists can be found from the end of beta which are 99.9% accurate.
