Let me start by saying that I like AoS and am looking forward to playing more and to new models.

But I have to say I'm a bit put off by the price of the hardback book. The contents -stories, Warscrolls (apparently including some already available for free), artwork and some scenarios-- seem a bit thin for $75 U.S.

The price of this book also made me think about the free rules. As I understand it, GW's intent is to make AoS a narrative, scenario driven game. To fully appreciate their design, you'll want access to the scenarios which drive the narrative.

It used to be that the big rule book was $75. Now the rules are free, but the scenarios are $75. Aren't I in nearly the same place?

Now I am grateful that GW has released the rules fo free (although can you imagine the gnashing of teeth if they'd only included them in the $75 book?!?).

Any way, I'm hoping that future scenario books come at a lower price.

Yeah, the price IMHO seems to be a bit steep. I am going to pick it up somewhere at a discount.

GW said that "rules" would be released for free. So far, that does seem to only include the warscrolls. Looking at the new AoS app, any battle formations that are in the new book are only available to add if you buy the digital version of the book. Which is clunky, because if I buy the hardcover, there is no way for me to access that. Not sure why you want to put the three battle formations behind a $50 pay wall, especially when some of your target market is going to spend $74 instead to buy the physical copy.

Here's hoping eventually they clear some of that up. I was thinking of contacting them about it to give some "constructive criticism".

Rules are free.

You are able to create and play any scenarios you can imagine.

You really don't have to be lead around by the nose if you don't want to be.

New book is mostly all fluff and pics. With a couple of Battle Formations for Sigs, Bloods and Treekin. And some Scenarios.

Yeah, the price "feels" steep for a book, but it is a REALLY big book. At 264 pages, I think it's bigger than any 40k Codex, and represents all new content.

I flipped through mine (haven't read it yet); it doesn't seem at all "necessary", though.

My preference really, would be campaign sets with printed material and models in a box like Deathstorm. Would make me really happy I don't mind paying $100+ if I get a pile of models out of it. Yeah, yeah, I know, there was Shield of Baal.

It is very much like Shield of Baal in that it's really for collectors, fluff, and the campaign / scenarios.

Creating and playing any scenarios I can imagine? For free? Heck why don't I just imagine up point values and a general army structure, maybe some additional rules clarifications while I'm at it! Its this amount of freedom that makes AoS so amazing, the game can be anything I want.

Sarcasm noted. His point was that while the core game in no way, shape or form requires scenarios, you have two main options if you're interested in playing them. The first is to buy an expensive and optional book. The second is to use your imagination and create your own. People and stores have been doing the latter for years and years, so please don't pretend this is a new phenomenon associated with Age of Sigmar.

I flicked through the store copy today. The scenarios are very basic in structure. No army structure, just some unique deployment and victory conditions. You could modify the old 8th scenarios pretty quickly to the same effect. Or modify 40k scenarios. Or any other wargame. Or dream up your own.

The fluff is mostly pictures. Again I don't think the book is particualry needed

I would regret spending £45 on it personally.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

You dont need the book to play. You`d buy if you wanted the story and to see the scenario`s etc. If you can pick it up with a decent discount its certainly worth a look but its not a requirement to play

The idea is to milk the gamer types with scenarios instead of unit profiles. I wouldn't be surprised if future books are on par with the SM codex in terms of cost.

I encourage anyone playing a model collection contest like AoS, to come up with their own scenarios... well unless you want a pretty picture book.

Given this contest is supposedly about "thinking outside the rules" and "fix it up yourself", the players should have no problem coming up with their own scenarios.
