Getting back into the hobby after a long absence, and one of my favorite things in 3rd ed was 40k in 40 minutes, We got it from white dwarf if I recall correctly. Do people still play that subgame for lack of a better term?

The rules for building an army that I remember were:

  • Each army was 400 Pts

  • Each army had to have at least two troops and an HQ

  • No creatures/characters with more than 2 wounds

  • No vehicles with armor greater than 11

  • Game last 4 turns or until concession, side that inflicted the most damage wins

  • I remember running around with two tac squads (10 and a 6), a razorback, and the cheap-o chaplain. It was kind of a precursor for kill team.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

I'm not aware of it being updated since then but still very playable, would depend on players in your area though. only thing would be armies that don't have HQ choices.

I really enjoyed 40k in 40 minutes (and the WD special they had about playing these games on a lunch break). It would be awesome to see this ruleset updated to 7th edition.

Thanks Knee, just what I was looking for, 40k in 40 mins coming to a FLGS near me.

Yeah, at the time that was written, Eldar didn't have a <2 wound HQ choice. We just went the 2nd ed way - and allowed an Exarch to "step up" and be that HQ.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

I play it with my 10 year old son. It short enough in time that he doesn't get bored and low enough points that the battle is actually fair.

I haven't seen anyone playing it while I was at the States, in the LFGS near the campus of the University I went to. Then again, I joint the Wargaming side of the hobby rather late (post 6e) so my experience is probably no that relevant.

On the other hand, the rules looks similar (though by no means the same) as Kill Team. As far as I can tell, the game is not timed.

Adepticon's Combat Patrol looks most simmilar to 40K in 40 minutes.

My club is going to run a 40k in 40 minutes cross WMH-Steamroller event in a few weeks.

    The basics are:
    500pt lists.

Players may have 2 army lists - in steamroller fashion. Unique models cannot be present in both lists.
Optional Detachment for players to use:
    0-1 HQ. 1-4 Troops. 1 FA, 1 Elite, 1 HS, 1 additional FA/Elite/HS

Armies are limited to 5 Community Comp points (www.communitycomp.org)

With all the whacky stuff available in today's game some of the original 40k in 40mins rules don't make much sense (and never did TBH). Why limit vehicles to AV 12, but allow armies of 20 scatterbikes? Community Comp rules attempt to curb a lot of that. Hopefully the alternate army drop alleviates some of it as well by allowing players to field an anti-vehicle or anti-eldar list.

We just had a combat patrol tourney this last weekend, at my FLGS, and it was fun, we gave 1:15 for break and setup, but most games finished before that. Some people like it and some do not. Being a small army turn 1 can be the deciding factor in some games, were in bigger games turn 1 is not such huge deal. It was alot of fun, and I hope we do some more small games, but for now we will be getting ready for some bigger tournies.

I think I enjoy smaller games more than the larger games so am tempted to try and get this going at my club...

Do you still play on a 6x4 for games this size?
