So basically a couple of friends and I have been looking for a good survival based game to play, because we've already picked clean our current arsenal of games. I don't mind it being unforgiving, the biggest thing would be it having quality game play (good mechanics, not many bugs etc), and realism. If it's on Steam that would also be a big plus.

Games we've tried:
Neo Scavenger
Don't Starve Together
Minecraft (figured I'd mention it just in case)
Wayward

We've played others but these are the first to come to mind.

There is not this idea.

Unreal World is the first I thought of:

Set in iron age quasi-finland. It's been a while since I played it, but it has the advantage of being free now.

It had some good realism, but it's a roguelike, and the mechanics and commands are a bit clunky.

Edit: I should have realized, you're looking for more multiplayer, right? So my suggestion's probably not the best.

The long dark: beta stage atm, Canadian setting after some world event, you have to survive by scanvenging mostly, they're making a storyline for the game on release.

Ark: very popular atm, it has Dinos and prehistoric beasts you can tame and ride; you start from cave man to master of a Bond villain base, alpha stage, but very high quality, highly recommended.

These are all good suggestions, but one of my friends has a not so great PC, so games like Ark wouldn't fly, until massive optimization is available, otherwise that game looks incredible and I already have my eyes on it. Also, I may just get Unreal World for myself, it looks pretty good, even if it is single player.

If anyone has anymore suggestions, I'll take note of them. Also, it doesn't have to be a recent game either, I'll take a game with crappy graphics but fun game play over the opposite any day.

Thanks for the suggestions, they are appreciated.

Unturned. Minecraft meets DayZ and its free to play. Its still quite early in development though.

You could also try the original Day Z, it has relatively low specs and its a very good survival game, albeit one that has become too much of a deathmatch.

That said a solo mode and private servers are on the way for DayZ

Sanctum 2 isn't bad - it's a tower defense from first person. FPS during the fight. Definitely feels like survival because you lose when you are overrun. Great fun with friends, cheap on steam.

EDIT just saw you like realism - this game is a bit cartoony. Maybe try Arma 3? They have tons of missions, I'm sure some put you behind enemy lines with little gear, a map, and go.

I would actually put forward Arma 3 Dayz Commander edition. I had a TON of fun with it, Rather than being unforgiving towards new players, it places constraints on veterans camping new players.

That has been a goal since the mod first appeared 4(?) years ago. I'm sure it will finally appear one day, eventually, maybe.

Private servers for Dayz SA are not going to happen, too easy to abuse the game, and port "uber" characters to public servers. That was what the devs said, and their rationalization.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, we've given DST another go, and Unturned is a real blast, especially with 3.0 making it not as easy as it was before. (Granted once you have the hang of it, it's still pretty easy). I'll look into Sanctum 2, but I don't know if we'll get into Arma or DayZ, but I'm still looking into it.

Have you experienced the 'bad moon' event? That happened to me right in the middle of the army base.....

I don't think that it will ever be 'difficult' unless there are some ranged enemies as you can kite anything other than a megazombie easily and you can 2 hit kill just about everything with maxed out melee skills.

No, I haven't seen a Bad Moon Event. I didn't know it existed even. (I should probably give the changelogs a read), and I agree that without ranged enemies I don't see how it could be harder. (Faster zombies, maybe?)

The bad moon (I can't remember what its actually called) aggros all the zombies in the area and presumably makes them harder although I just ran away so I can't confirm that

There already are fast zombies but they are still easily kiteable.

If only the Lost In Blue games weren't DS only. . .

Robinson's Requiem is on Good Old Games, I've only played a bit of it but that might be up your alley

So a friend and I were playing Unturned, but wanted to do it through LAN, and we got the server to work. I could join perfectly, but after a few moments everything didn't respond to me. I could wander around, and that was about it. Anyone know if it was just poor Internet speed, or is this an actual problem with how a Hamachi server is with v3.0.0?
