Hey everyone,
Me and my buddy are getting back into 40k and I'm revitalizing my old Tau army while he makes a Grey Knights army. I've never played against Grey Knights and my goal here isn't really to form a super tailored list but just get some general tips on what to do/watch out for from the Grey Knights. Thanks.

Just sit back and shoot. You definitely have the edge on GK. If you see any Dreadknights... take those out first.. you should be fine. He has more to worry about lol

Landraiders might be an issue at long rang, since all you have that can pen its armour at long range is the hammerhead. So watch out for the landraider getting close and dropping off some terminators for assault.

Thanks guys, the dreadknights seemed to be the most scary. He said they have a gun that shoots 12 force/instant death shots. O.O so definitely going to gun for that as you mentioned.

That's actually a terrible weapon. Why is everyone so scared of it? S4 is crap in 7th ed.

Because it's a high RoF force gun.
It's the mother of all hail marries.
That being said. Spam suits, spam plasma and fusion, and if you got riptides, an IA/TLFB/EWO/STIM setup will be his bane.

It's a terrible weapon most of the time, but quite useful versus Tau and Nids, as it can pop multi-wound low-to-medium toughness models on a single failed armor save. That is the only reason why a GK player would take one, and the only version worth taking is on the DreadKnight.

Actually, even wounding on 6 and 2+ save, it has slightly over 18% chance to land a kill.
Not that terrible against MCs at large.

Have more bodies than he. GK have the second most expensive model-per-points ratio (loses to IK), so you won't see many models around - each one who dies is a blow to his army.
Farsight Enclaves has a signature system - Talisman of Arthas Moloch - that could help you denying some maledictions/witchfires
EWO is supreme. GK generally come from Deep Strike or use the Gate of Infinity, a psychic power that teleports them around.

Actually Farsight enclave also usually field a lower model-per-point ratio.
Sure they HAVE infantry, but you play enclaves for suit spam of doom, not fire warriors.

You'll get it for the talisman - just a small CAD to grab it. the core of his army should be tau empire vs grey knights

Its one of two paths.
Empire main "fortress" is totally viable, but enclaves suit spam will also fare well against GK, if only due to the unnatural AP2 saturation they can field (totally viable to have every gun a plasma/fusion and above)

I'm far too stubborn to be corrupted by net lists lol. I try to balance it between what's good and what I like as a theme or the fluff I like. I really like mobile/mechanized forces and I honestly refuse to use Far Sight 'cause I like the main Tau Empire. I just can't bring myself to play a traitor to our cause! Haha... unless they retconned his lore, I haven't looked at his new rules/fluff yet.

Eh, an 18% chance effectively means it'll happen once per game. And that's only if you last 5+ turns. That's why I prefer the reliability of the Psycannon.

Lots of Fire Warriors being buffed by an Ethereal in a devilfish will make quick work of any GK army. Tons of Str 5 fire at long range, powerful overwatch, too many bodies to handle, GK's superior melee weapons and abilities are completely wasted on Tau infantry. Anything that gets into CC with GK WILL die but that's ok because it means the GK are left in the open to die to shooting. Fusion/Plasma crisis suits or ion riptides are you anti Dread Knight units while your infantry just force the GK terminators to roll 100s of armor saves. Kroot with sniper rounds can spam rending shots vs GK and act as a screen for your Fire Warriors.

Well, that IS against a 2+ save and T6 or 7. psycanon is hardly relevant there anyway.
T6 Sv3 or T5Sv2 will have 36% to get ID (most NMC, centurions, nurgle prince, many HQs)
T5 Sv3 (demon prince, some HQs) will have 60% (!) to die
Actually now that I ran the numbers, it rather good at killing most MCs in the game (and by extend, characters), if only because its a "one wound and you are dead" deal.
Even against a riptide/dreadknight, an 18% to land a kill with your secondary fighting mode is quite impressive.
And shot count makes it still relevant in helping clearing hordes.
I'm starting to like this gun.

Put things you care about in reserve - put enough rubbish units out that he can't table you with alpha strike - then deep strike suits and wreck EVERYTHING with plasma. You really shouldn't have any issue doubling his model count with plasma guns. People really wonder how tau are considered OP?

Since he is getting back into this and you have an existing army from a newer codex, take it easy. Plus we should be getting a new one either next month or the month after. I prefer suits but have two devilfish with firewarriors. I am not a hard core competition player and tend to field how I imagine the army to look, as opposed to whats most effective.
Deathrain suits are still useful.
Heatwave suits are even better in the "new" codex than they were in the old ones and can easily threaten even TEQs. TL Flamer and normal flamer x3. Cheap nasty squad and if it dies, oh well.
Fire Knives remain a general use suit but you do now see them very often since people specialize their suits these days from what I have seen.
Fusion suits are popular for obvious reasons as are plasma suits. I might experiment in my lists with TL fusion and plasmas teams.
Then there is riptides. If you two are staying friendly, don't get more than one. They are cool looking models and highly effective.
Markerlights are still useful obviously. I prefer them on Tetra platforms rather than on squishy pathfinders.
Have fun with it. Tau are one of the more fun armies to play if you don't castle up. Highly mobile with mass firepower. Castling is boring to play and play against.
|
If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

My friend suggested I start rolling on Divination with my Inquisitors and fishing for Misfortune to follow around my Heavy Psilencer Dreadknight. I think this makes that weapon much more dangerous with force active. Just an idea, thought it was a good one.
