Droids have either masculine or feminine programming. Abrams has referred to BB-8 as "he" and based on the noises the Sphero version makes, I would definitely say it has masculine programming.

If I recall Droids only develop a 'personality' if their memory core isn't wiped every so often. If a droid goes long enough without being wiped clean they begin to develop quirks and identities.

Droids also have some qualities preprogrammed. Particularly higher end droids expected to engage in interaction with sentients. These will usually have a masculine or feminine programming, this is especially common in protocol droids. They can indeed start off the factory floor with a mock personality at least. Over time, droids can develop a real personality or even sentience(In universe this is debatable, its never been fully confirmed or accepted that droids can achieve sentience)

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines
Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
Droids are weird. They definetly act like they can feel pain and actively try to avoid getting hurt and display fear. But is that sentience of just really fancy programming?

Fancy self-preservation programming, although it doesn't really explain the droid torture in Jabba's palace

Aren't there parts where C3P0 was sad that he wasn't brave like R2D2? Was he not only programmed less brave but also programmed to know that he was less brave and then programmed to wish that he had more bravery Instead of just making him brave?
I would imagine that George never spend near as much thought on this as random internet nerds like us, but it's deep man!

Oh I believe that droids in Star Wars can and do achieve sentience, the fluff has said as much. Just saying that in-setting or within the movies it can be tough to distinguish.
The Battle Droids, despite their antics, were definitely not sentient. Just quirky due to the new programming.

In my opinion, the droids are as sentiant as the owner wants them to be. Like C-3PO was that sentiant because he worked for a senator as a butler/servent. So maybe having something like that would make him feel at ease. like a constant companion sort of thing when traveling.
As for the torturing the droids, my brother shot his 360 when it failed. Maybe its something Akin to that? a sort of catharsis release when a piece of machine fails you..

According to the EU, Tales from Jabba's Palace, the droid doing the torturing- EV-9d9 could sense the pain of droids, and installed pain chips in them prior to torturing them in order to savor the rush of sensation as they deactivated. Weird stuff to be sure, a droid programmed to torture and kill droids.

There's the theory that Kylo Ken IS Luke, because he fell to the dark side starting in Return of the Jedi.
While it could just be a reference to being a Sith, the line in Japanese trailer where he says something about "continuing our legacy" before showing the burned Vadar helmet seems to throw some legitimacy to the evil Luke theory.

Seem pretty clear to me that Kylo Ren is Adam Driver and not Mark Hamill. Also consider -- in addition to many other things -- that Luke actually knows how to build a proper lightsaber.
As far as Luke falling to the Dark Side in general, anything's possible. Personally I'd put my chips on that NOT being the case, although I DO think that Abrams is intentionally letting that idea linger out there. He likes to keep audiences guessing, and I think Luke's location/fate/etc. is shaping up to be one of the storylines within the film.
, I will stop eating my popcorn and set it aside. Serious business.
Wo wo, no sense flying off the handle now...

I can't see a Dark Side Luke. It would totally undermine the whole point of his arc in IV-VI... I can see only one way of doing it that would sort of work, and that is to have him retread Anakin's/Vader's path in the face of an impending tragedy, on the basis that if Vader could eventually break free of the Dark Side then so could he, hence the fact he seems to be trying to 'vanish' until he's clear of the taint... But that would still not really be that great of a plot,
More than likely, he's a recluse and he's gone all 'Yoda' on everyone, because ultimately if he is the only Jedi and there are no Sith then the force is not 'balanced', and having one Jedi have that influence unopposed is as potentially dangerous as one Sith with that unchallenged power.

The guy with the blog or whatever proclaiming the "Luke fell to the DS at the end of ROTJ...it was right in front of us all along!" theory put a lot of effort into seeing something that isn't there. Also, although it's early yet, none of the fiction being written to fill the gap between ROTJ and TFA has obviously pointed to Luke being fallen or moving toward falling to the DS.
Abrams is self-admittedly a big SW fan, and I think he probably knows what audiences want to see -- in this case Luke the Jedi Master, not Luke the Big Bad.
I'm gonna call the popcorn bet and raise it a large soda (that's what, $27?) and double down in the "evil Luke clone" theory. She's checking out a cloning canister and they have his hand!
Wake up sheeple!

Well, after ROTJ, Luke took a little vkay down in TJ to celebrate, and he kinda got an infection...
I'd bet its a quest to find him and he's either held prisoner or he's a bad guy who's been brainwashed and the last episode he's free! Alternatively its similar but in thefirst episode he's free and takes out a major bad guy Ben Kenobi style...

There's only been one instance that I know of where Luke falls to the Dark Side of the Force. And that was in the comic series Dark Empire
