Subject: Star Wars The Force Awakens -- full of spoilers so beware !
Back to the weird Finn/Poe slash fic. Yes that's right both are attractive men and Hollywood like pretty people esp. women because people like something nice to look at and sex also sells. Even Disney knows this which is why they take advantage of people's urges while holding it back just enough to tease. Western culture is odd with teasing sex.

They're not the same thing.
You are the only one who can say what is attractive to you and not, but how is Gwendoline's attractiveness relevant to begin with in this subject? You didn't comment on whether Han or Finn looked good or not. Is that not just as relevant?
Lots of people commented on Kylos attractiveness if you read the thread. I believe words like pouty lips and wavey angst hair are used etc.
ultimately if someone doesn't like someones face, there isn't much you can do to convince them otherwise.
Then they are doing it wrong as well. Kylo Ren could have looked like Peter Dinklage for all it matters; he is who he is because he is Force-sensitive, sufficiently obedient and Solo's son, not because he looks like X or Y.

You mean in your opinion...
People enjoy looking at attractive people, hence why most actors tend to be attractive/have more money spent on their appearance than most of us will make in our lives. Sure you could be one of the few who don't care about the looks of someone at all but if someone wants to judge an acting person based off looks (alongside all the rest or even looks alone) then they are free to do so.
You are the one who claimed she is super bangable even to the lowliest of men (a pretty odd comment but whatever) so really you too are judging based on looks.
Anyway this is off topic.

Short hair on women isn't super attractive but I can deal with it. Haircut matters but there's usually nothing worse than a single ponytail. Seriously people should rename ponytail to rat tail because both disgust me about as much. Double pony tails can be ok sometimes.
Women that are athletic or somewhat manly are not as attractive esp. if they have a super large build. Normally I'd like a girl fit but no body-builder esp. the freakish female bodybuilders but then that's always too far with males and females.
Sexist? Calm down and put on your big boy panties. Women have attractive men in movies too. Remember those men in the 'twilight' movies and the very average girl. Also if we're on the subject of characters in 'star wars' leia in most cases with her weird hair buns (breakfast style) have never made it really attractive. In fact with few exceptions 'star wars' probably doesn't have many attractive women. Han, Finn, Poe and Lando however oozed with looks and charisma/charm (ok maybe Finn didn't).

What? 'She is not ugly.' does not mean 'She is super bangable.'
There is a whole world of women between top and bottom and those people are not ugly.
I'd argue that Gwendoline looks fairly average in terms of raw attractiveness, but then, that is not what makes her so awesome.

True, you just said even the lowliest men wouldn't call her ugly. My bad.

I suppose this thread proves me wrong. The lowliest men do call her ugly.
Ho ho ho ho ho.
Seriously though, why is Gwendoline's attractiveness a concern? It's a movie. People are going to look different. Wouldn't you get bored if you only got supermodels all the time and no average people?

People like what people like. Is it shallow sometimes? Sure. That said people can't control what they're attracted to they just are attracted to certain things.
Far as the actress that plays Phasma she's not half bad so sayeth my wang. Not super pretty but if she wanted it I'd go for it.
As a totally hetero-sexual male though I will say Poe is an attractive man and I will even admit a guy like that may make me confused and conflicted somewhat as to my sexual preferences and where they stand. I may have to nip that in the bud though before some yaoi girls show up.
----------
Once again we need more worthwhile female baddies in star wars.
I also did notice the trash compactor humor was pretty decent. Dunno how I felt about the monster that got stuck on the millennium falcon though.
----------
@ashiraya: Seriously that was uncalled for. She may not be ugly and they're being a bit judgmental but come on I'm sure you've been as well. If I recall a lot of guys thought you were attractive and personally I felt you were kinda middle of the road.
I used to know some really freaking attractive girls and some were gamer girls too. Said girls were out of my league true but I feel like they were at least more to my liking than you. It's a personal thing though and that's absolutely fine.

Or maybe men have more standards than you assumed?
I much prefer normal people. For example Gettysburg is full of normal looking people (perhaps a bit much overweightness but still). The problem comes when you have a movie full of attractive people and a few non attractive people. It really increases the gap and if the movie has people doing highly choreographed and planned movements (something not natural looking) like TFA and has a lot of incredibly well groomed and above average people in it, having someone that breaks this stands out a lot more.
Really it depends on context and stuff. If this movie had more normal looking people then maybe she wouldn't stick out in comparison (not that we see her face in the movie).

Well... As you said, we don't see her face in the movie, so therefore it's not relevant?
I mean, for all the ten seconds she appears, she does her job of 'cold evil luitenant' very well. In GoT she looks like a hardass (appropriate for the role, for Brienne is one) and in if she ends up looking like a hardass in the next SW I don't see the problem.

Ignoring the looks (I have only "seen" her in starwars) many would disagree. I see a lot of people saying her role was pretty pathetic with such little screen time and a cowardly role. I expected her to fight to the death instead of turning on the shields etc. To me she seems more like a cowardly commander than anything else after seeing her role in the movie. I'm fine with that though because her silver suit is not nice to look at either really.
Ultimately I suspect it's the scripts fault not hers.

I'd just like to see a worthwhile female baddie that's even a somewhat decent character period. None of this women and minorities can only be good guys and that's how you tell the good guys from the bad guys crap. Sure it's somewhat understandable and in other movies it happens but I really want to see a baddie that's not a white dude or wrinkled prune alien for star wars.
I dunno how much of a hard *** she was in 'the force awakens'. She sounded serious and drilled (erm trained not the other kind of 'drilled' ). Since he was trained since birth to fight the enemies of 'the first order' I have to wonder how confusing puberty must have been for people like 'Finn'. Seriously I know the movies are PG but that would realistically cause a lot of problems and weirdness in real life. Who knows how many sexually committed atrocities would happen because they were only trained to fight? We have no idea just how far this mental conditioning goes. Once again this is 'star wars' and the movies are mostly PG.
I will say I didn't totally mind 'the first order' killing civilians. You might say that it seems a bit much but understand they killed off luke's aunt and uncle and not only that but destroyed an entire planet with the death star in 'A New Hope'. If anything it's sort of in line with what the imperials would do.
I do find it strange though like others must have said that Finn freaks out about holding a dying stormtrooper in his hands in what can only be said is being new to the horrors of war and witnessing it firsthand. Then we see him slaughter what were his brothers only a day ago or so. You know I understand he wasn't thrilled about the civilian murder but whatever happened to seeking revenge for the death of his brother in arms?

Can we pull the thread back out of the cellar of misanthropy and GOT already?
Saw it. It was fine, but just to the level of your average popcorn movie. Managed to see it with the entire family though, which was epic. Me and the Boy, drinking boubon and vodka. Definitely worth it.

I value Gwendoline Christie as an actor for her badass roles, not her looks. I have no interest in rating her looks, which are irrelevant to this film anyway. She's playing a military leader, she doesn't need to be pretty. Can we get back on topic please?
And please don't try connecting this to Gamergate, it has nothing to do with Star Wars and its really silly to equate every instance of sexism to Gamergate. Its become a bogeyman every bit as absurd as Jewish conspiracy theories.

I'm pretty sure the pictures were meant as a joke. Still though is a light saber deflecting baton weapon standard issue stormtrooper gear? Whether it is or isn't he defeated Poe which was basically owning quite a few stormtroopers up to that point. As cool as Phasma looked she didn't really do much. Once again gonna say so far she's the Boba Fett of the new trilogy. At least that's how it seems so far. The whole trash compactor comment though funny really does make Phasma look bad. There's no way her image can fully recover from that.
I'm also going to say her name 'Phasma' is a nickname considering 'Finn' like all the other stormtroopers had a serial number name (when you think about it wouldn't that be really unpleasant to remember. Hopefully they just say the last 2 or 3 numbers when talking to squadmates otherwise it'd be a jumbled mess to say.
@ashiraya: Too late to talk about now.

Maybe JJ should have had Cpt Phasma fight Finn and kick his ass instead of a nameless Storm Trooper. It would have given her something to do, and established her as a badass competent in melee combat as well as blasters.
And then JJ could have had her spitting fury after Finn making his escape. Surviving a blaster shot to the back (doesn't the stormtrooper get shot by han with the bowcaster?) or being thrown through the air by an x wing laser cannon blast, and STILL being conscious and pissed off would establish her as hard as nails.

It'd have made more sense. That said we now have a fairly competent low level stormtrooper now who probably doesn't even get a freaking nickname. Closest thing he gets called is probably electro-vibrato stick guy or more appropriately "girl's best friend" ;P.

I was kind of torn on whether I thought the anti-lightsaber baton was ridiculous or awesome - I think I came down on the side of awesome (after the Jedi coming back basically resulted in the doom of the Emperor / Empire, it would make sense that they'd outfit certain squad members to be able to combat lightsabers).
We were talking about the movie today and I think my only criticism is it was a bit slow - everyone hates The Phantom Menace, but the lightsaber duel and podrace were amazing at the time, really suspenseful. This movie, in some ways the action felt predictable to me, and didn't have the suspense of prior ones. For example, their infiltrating the Endor moon was majorly nerve-wracking (at least for the characters) in Return of the Jedi, but in this movie they just "Oh we'll drop from lightspeed inside their shields" and didn't build it up in the same way.
I think this is because they had a lot of ground to cover, but I think I would've preferred covering less ground and giving each scene it's due a bit more.
Overall, I liked it much better than 1 - 3, but I hope they make the next one a little more exciting - not necessarily more action (in fact, maybe even less), but definitely more suspense.

It was somewhat nerve-wracking as they had a time limit till leia and all them were vaporized. However I think one of the most nerve-wracking movies I've seen was probably less star wars and another movie entirely. I haven't seen the whole movie but the movie 'misery' displayed a lot of nerve-wracking and helplessness. Being stranded in a snow storm with somebody that's keeping you ill but simultaneously keeping you alive. Trying to get away from her so that you can return to your own life. Now that was suspenseful. Far as Star Wars goes I think the most suspense in the films was in episode 3 during the emperor and the 4 jedi masters fighting and being cornered as well as luke fighting vader esp. considering they were talking about the good guys losing the battle as luke fought darth vader. Course the day is saved by EWOKS!!! When you're beaten by teddy bears that's pretty much the low point of your career.
Though the current star wars is a bit childish it is true they were often like that. I guess nerds that grew up on childhood love of star wars and being unable to see the new movies in that way (due to getting older) and seeing the old movies through nostalgia goggles is a thing. Although I disagree about one of the posters about Rey (on the mary sue topic) I am happy that his daughters found a character in one of his beloved franchise to enjoy esp. considering 'star wars' as a series was always aimed at the kids.
I personally never got all the hate about the re-edits with 'han shot first' and all the rage that induced. Seriously if you're that angry by the fact Han shot first I could only wonder how angry you'd be if your whole universe was blown, farted and or crapped out of a black hole ***hole and turned into something infinitely worse with the original content now being considered dead and every average fan having spent hundreds if not thousands on the universe in question. *cough* warhammer fantasy *cough*
@Shadow Captain Edithae: While that would be cool I'd honestly prefer more ships that could destroy capital ships in one giant laser blast. That might be infinitely more useful now that the republic is in charge (or did they lose control again?).

Yeah, it was the only part of the story that had me rolling my eyes. However, I'm glad it was just a backdrop set piece for the character stories and not a major plot point like it was in 4 and 6. I just hope we can finally move past it. I'm sure it was a studio decision.
