Hi Dakka!
I got these models as part of a boot sale purchase but have no idea what system they are part of. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They're from a board game called "Dark World" that was made by Waddingtons (IIRC) the 90s.

I was thinking they look very similar to the Heroquest and Warhammer quest models. Were they designed by GW? Or did the designers of Dark World "take inspiration" from GW?

At the risk of opening this can of worms, why would you think that? They're all generic monsters. GW hardly owns the concepts of mummies, skeletons, ogres or orcs.
If anything, this was a watered-down version of something like D&D.

You mean like GW's first games were a watered down version of something like D&D?

The scimitar-over-the-head pose of the orks is similar.
I take your point, and it could explain why the mummies are similar, except for the pose.
It could also be that they were produced using the same methods, so the same level of detail would come out.
Dark World is 1992, compared to 1989 for Heroquest, so the timing does make it look like jumping on a bandwagon.

It's an extremely common pose for single-piece models.

Not a terrible board game. The mini quality was better than HeroQuest, IMO.

The game had really astonishingly nice components. It had little treasure chests that could be flipped open, and inside were gold weapons that could be physically slotted into the heroes hands. All the collectables, such as potions and swift boots were moulded out of plastic. And the dungeon board was amazing, it had real plastic doors on hinges that could be opened and closed, some of the rooms had secret passageways which were paintings on the wall that rotated and lead to other rooms, and the end stage was this entire plastic castle type thing that you had to ascend before fighting the boss.
Unfortunately, the gameplay is terrible, probably because it's designed for 10 year olds. It's virtually impossible for the bad guy to win, as the heroes just get respawned at the start when they die, so it ends up being a fancy game of snakes and ladders, with a replay value of about zero.
I took a photo of some of the components from my game. I'd actually forgotten how much cool stuff comes in the box. I think it would be really nice to use the board and components for a different dungeon crawler with slightly better rules. I think it could easily work for a game like SDE.

I still have my copy too. I did start painting it back in the mists of time. Always planned on using the plastic castle thing as a scenery piece.
