So, I was reading the Necron Codex and it said that Necron leaders, including Overlords could be eccentric and weird. For fluff purposes, is it possible for a Necron Overlord to be kind of eccentric, flamboyant, and showy? I don't necessarily mean his armor or anything, but more in how he talks and walks and acts.

Absolutely. In fact, a lot of Overlords are very cocky and full of themselves.

I never liked the necrons getting "personalitys" I always saw them as a sort of hive mind / terminater style army. Just a bunch of robots controlled by a greater central directive. Unfeeling, uncaring, remorseless and completely immune to any psychology. They don't care about honor or anything. No egos to play against (or lead to one making a bad tatical choice)

Now they all have "personality" and can talk and whatever. Makes them too much like every other army. I liked the old style better. When ctan were a threat and not just lesser pieces of some other greater being.

I thought it was a mix of both where the higher ups retained their pre-robot personality, but the lower down foot soldiers basically became mindless robots after being killed so many times and reformed, since their soul or whatever decayed a little each time they reformed.

I just always viewed them as many small skynet clusters as opposed to just one hive mind like the Tyranids.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

I wouldn't mind the whole 'several central processor' idea, even with them warring over which 'process' is the one to victory, as long as they are not too human.

I like how it currently is. You only have the upper echelons with actual personality and ambition, and the numberless legions essentially mindless automatons. Keeps their armies loyal, unyielding, and obedient, while the leadership has versatility and unpredictability from one to the next which provides room for entertainment, creativity, and originality.

Seriously, if it stayed the old way how could they develop any kind of significant fluff in terms of political intrigue, intra-Necron conflict and story variation without some kind of ambitious personality singularities?

Codex: 2 pages of history about the C'tan, the WiH, and Necrontyr, 5 pages of boring fluff about silent machines and the tales of other races encountering them which are all exactly alike. It'd be exactly like the Tyranid codex. One hive-minded race is good enough, but two in the same IP? Ehhh, no thanks.

Meet Assholetep. More Necrodermis than you can handle.

Absolutely they can. Lords and Overlords have all the personalities of people. Just hateful old undead people.

This isn't even a change. Even before Wardcrons, the highest ranked Necrons maintained their own individuality and personality traits (they just weren't eve specifically fleshed out in the lore).

Personally, I think that Nemesor Zahndrekh is one of the greatest things to ever happen to the army.

Whenever people complain about the new Necron fluff, I wonder if they realize it allows for entire dynasties of Necrons behaving just like Oldcrons.

This is actually something I want to look into, as I'm thinking of having necrons as my second army. The issue is they seem rather dull when compared to the cackling chaos or the war-crazy orks. But the necrons seem so... one-note. I know that some of them have started having personality, so I think this could be a gateway to having a more personal army.

The upper echelons do have personality, and to an extent some of the elite troops do (i.e. immortals) the vast hordes of warriors lose theirs entirely after being killed and resurrected so many times

A Commen theme amongst the necrons are that they are no longer as cool and terminator-like as they used to be.

Thing is, the Fluff is not being re-written, its being expanding upon. In the 5th they mention the served worlds.

Worlds that has been taken over by the master program of their tomb and they are basicly robots.

Robots as some of us know and love.

Now... that we all could just go with being the master program. but we are giving the chance of making ourself an Avatar in this univers that is a necron. And not just a any necron... It demands you only to be the best of the robots.

that means you can be anything you want to be:
go Crazy from the long sleep? being a total terminator, a person that fights by a code. its all so much more.

I can¨'t be the only one that enjoyed to put gear on my overlord in the 5th. And then kit out a cryptek to assist the HQ.

When I put a Landraider of a Necron Overlord on the table I was sure that this guy would be the best thing on the table.

Now making up your own fluff is also more fun. given they are Xenos, they have very little to limit them.

you can sit on top of a Doomsday weapon that is just waiting to power up?

you can try to rebuild? Reclaim?

you can even go full slow and be a hippie... granted; I am not supporting that idea but hey... some Ork players would love to borrow a monolith for their custom battle thingys...

All that said. Necron personallityes are the best way to get yourself a spot in the galaxy without messing around with the cannon. course you can be all that you say you are.

Discussing the Quallity of their personality later.

My biggest gripe with the fluff which has driven me further and further away from the Necrons is that they're too human with no element of mystery to them. Then again it might be that characters that fight honorably I find the most distasteful and idiotic hence why the likes of Zandrekh, Anrakyr and Imotekh have never been to my liking.

But anyway, sure, you can create an entire court with each member having its own personality and blah blah blah. But it's up to you in whether or not you make them alien or humans in tin suits.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

Quoted for truth.

I don't understand the obsession people have with the old Necrons. They were seriously boring, and the same thing as Tyranids. Why have two armies with pretty much the same fluff?

The only good sentient personality Necron is a dead one. Death to independent thought.

I still really hate that change to them. A lot. Enough that I am starting a DE army before I did them.

I hope GW makes a new major faction of robots that are a single conscious entity and thoroughly evil. Not just eccentric capitalist businessmen who don't die. Don't forget the central necron bureaucracy.

:(
My poor Crons. There was a day when people respected you. You were so cool back in the Dawn of War game. Then I guess you finished waking up and turned out to be really boring.

You want a faction of robots with a single conscious entity that's thoroughly evil, play Tyranids.

The Necrons were never that trope.

Oldcron fluff included;

- High-ranked Necron Lords (now named Overlords) that were crazy.
- Necrons kidnapping people to perform experiments on them.
- Necrons that had been taken over by their Tomb AIs
- Necrons driven mad with the obsession of clothing themselves in flesh once more.
- Necrons using genetic manipulation to create human blankers.

Amongst other things.

They had the tiniest fraction more of thought then, but only slightly. They were all unified in purpose like the nids though. I think that's a better way to explain it.

Not this squabbling court of nobles.

They weren't really united in purpose. The largest fluff encounter with a Necron force in the old fluff was the five Shrouds that made the Mars run, otherwise it was a Harvest or a Cairn with an escort or two at most. Individual tombs had no contact with each other, their infrastructure was in tatters. There was no unified Necron intelligence at all.
