I've been hearing a lot of bad things in posts on this message board about Deathwing Terminators in that they simply aren't very good even against basic Space Marines. But, I may have misunderstood in that the Deathwing Terminators that came with Dark Vengeance aren't very good. Is it possible to make Deathwing Terminators? I recently bought the Dark Angels Expansion, and even after building a set of Deathwing Knights, I just need to buy new Shoulder Pads, Legs, and Backs, and I have enough left to create a Deathwing Terminator squad at around 1/3 the price of buying a brand new box. Is it possible to put together a good Terminator Squad? If so, what weapons are good and legal (per the rules) to equip them with?

Deathwing Knights are extremely popular, as are TH/SS guys but building the latter isn't really much of an option here (you used up your Storm Shields and each Deathwing box only has one Thunder Hammer in it).

You are right. Looking at bits on eBay, buying new legs, shoulder pads, backs, Storm Shields, and four extra Thunder Hammers... it'll end up costing almost as much as just buying a new box.

I love my deathwing terminators. The biggest advantage deathwing terminators have is that they can combine shooting and assault capabilities into a single squad. I usually include 2 lightning claw termies in my squads to make sure I get to attack at normal initiative. Plasma cannon are a decent addition to deathwing terminators as well. Terminators are weak against grav cannon and against too many squads with AP2 weapons, but can still be useful. In my group's meta terminators are still quite potent. In a recent game I had a single deathwing sergeant with a pair of lightning claws hold a bridge against a massed ork assault for 3 full turns on his own despite facing multiple power claws invalidating his 2+ save. So they can be good. They also get some other advantages given their detachments and when combined with ravenwing can pretty much arrive on whatever turn you want them to arrive from reserves, and have them land exactly where you want them without scatter. Once they deep strike they can run and then shoot or shoot and then run in the first shooting phase they arrive. So they don't just remain all clumped up for a turn until they can spreadout. All of those have helped make them very effective for me in my games with them. If your meta is full of eldar and necron players then they won't be as effective for you as they are for me, though. In my group I have the only eldar army and there is only 1 necron army in the group as well. So the deathwing work well for me.

Thanks for the input. I know there are people who play Eldar at my store. I don't know how many do, though. Necrons... I know of one person who is going to start playing. He had been waiting to finish putting together a certain nasty formation that people hate (not sure which one).

That said, I'm not sure I'd be playing against them right now. They are the much more knowledgable players that have been playing for years and know most of the rules from memory where I'm a newbie. I'd probably be playing with the people who focus on AoS and have small 40K armies or thoe who have a lot of patience.

They can be devastating. A squad of them overran my 3 Helbrute Mayhem Pack formation in one bloody round.

Were they all the Storm Shield/Thunder Hammer versions of the Terminators or the Terminators with Lightning Claws, Chainfists, Cyclone Missile Launchers, Assault Cannons, Heavy Flamers, and Plasma Cannons?
