Subject: Can movement trays be used in AoS?

I know there are some rules that allow models to pile in on a unit. But, does that apply to just the models within range or all models in the unit? Since I'm playing Vampire Counts, there's a chance I might have many Zombies, Skeletons, or Ghouls on the table at any time. It would be much easier to use a tray in that case over moving say 30 or 40 models. So, are movement trays still useable in AoS or are they more-or-less obsolete now?
Thanks

They're a great way to move big units around still, esp if you're on square bases.
Once you get into charges though you'll want to take them off, or at least take the back ranks off to do your pile ins and lap around.
It's all about maximizing your models in striking distance in AoS.

Thanks! Looking around on eBay, there are people making movement for figures with round bases. I honestly hope to stick with square bases for AoS though. I know the newest models don't use the square bases, but I'm hoping that GW continues to sell square bases even if they move most of their Fantasy/AoS models to round bases.

It's probably easier to use movement trays if you have them, since there's no template weapons in AoS.

The unit gets to pile-in if a model from the unit is within 3" of an enemy model.
Piling in *is* optional, but models have to pile-in toward the closest enemy model if they do, regardless of the unit it belongs to.
There's been a fair bit of discussion around movement trays, and there's no reason why you can't use them - but as More Dakka pointed out, you'll likely be disadvantaging yourself when it comes to combat.
(On a 20mm base, you'll effectively be able to attack in 2 or 3 ranks depending on the armament you're using).

One of my friends with a store brought in some Litko skirmish trays for 10 25mm bases. Snagged all he had. They work well and look spiffy on the table.

Would it be possible or worthwhile to play the game entirely in the whfb blocks and ranks and movement trays manner, with no piling in?

Don't see why not, but it's making a decision not to be able to get as many models in combat/not maximize your effectiveness. If both players have an agreement to play that way it would work fine. Would warp some of the units' effectiveness re: weapon ranges, advanced piling in distance and whatnot.

I use movement trays. 20mm bases on trays mean that 2 ranks fight with 1" weapons, for example. It's better than overlapping bases for the same combat density.
