Hi,

After my test 3D print with a small tarrantula battery went trough pretty well (see here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/663446.page), I am now working on a broadside drone for tau. I dont know who deserves credit for the basic design idea, as there are quite a few remora-to-broadside conversions out there.

anyway here my current WIP. Three main things i didnt decide on yet:
how to hold the SMS - scorpion stinger like or on both dies of the main body?
body underbelly and engine - one or two intakes / exhausts and which style.
connection points between the rails and the main body

comments and criticism welcome
regards
alex

Wow, tough crowd today.

Anyway here a few design updates. I didnt finish the underbelly yet. but that i think will come last as i would just fill the remaining space with random bits.

design 1: compact and propulsion on the back. a bit more traditional i would say. However i dont like the engines for that. i think they would have to be more integrated... similar to the one in the backpack of the XV-9 flat front with intakes and then half round on the back

design 2: wider stance. more spacing between the rail rifles, tilted to break up horizontal lines and the SMS in a scorpion like tail. i have to say that i like the tilted rifles. the missile pods in this configuration look very much like a standard SMS and are very recognisable but this makes the model very high i feel. not sure it that really fits.

design 3: a drone with a shield in front. a more original design and maybe better to justify a 2+ armor safe. i think i like the shield but maybe two separate panels would be better. also i think there should be a gap between the upper drone body and the shield. then i have to construct some kind of brace or attach them to the engine - which i wouldnt like.

all in all i think i would like the drone a bit flatter. the engines or the sms in the back feels too high.

what do you think?

I think I like option 1 the most, however I think it would be good from an engineering point of view to mount the engine thrusters integral to the railguns. After all in a floating gun platform the recoil has to go somewhere

Engines on the guns means that the frame doesnt need to transfer the forces about.

I like #2 the most. The first one looks too flat for me and the third's plate looks... off? You could use #1 as a base and change the angle of the guns to different angles, like in #2 to add some variety.

This is pretty cool, #2 looks the best imo.

I think the missile pods would look cool if they were oriented in such a way that mimics the Skyray. Maybe also extend and shrink the propulsion packs so they are slightly longer but more thin; I think that would look a bit better, personally.

With the adjustments I mentioned above, I think 1 would suit it best.

But they are all super cool, that's for sure

So, like horizontal missile pods? I second that, if that's what you mean.

Thanks guys.
looks like the shield is really not popular. i think i will just drop that idea.

engines on the guns must be fun. i didnt think about that. but then i would have to go back and change the gun design which i hope to avoid ^^

i think i am getting what you are saying about the missle pods. horizontal sitting a bit lower but on some kind of mount a bit off to the side... will try that.

and yeah the engine is just a first design as placeholder. i will beef that up when i add the bodies underbelly

thanks for the suggestions

You should totes make an all drone army. No firewarrior, gun drones, and make ones that represent the suits. THAT would be cool!

A few people have done already all drone armies. however i have not yet seen a 'crisis drone' design which i liked. I think this design would be too beefy for it. i guess the main problem is that the regular suit weapons (plasma and melta) somehow look not very good on drone bodies. but who knows... maybe in the future.

anyway here the updated design. the engine is basically finished and im satisfied. now two things remain: weapon connections and misslepods

The missle pods look OK too me. but somehow the special something is missing. maybe i should stack two or angle them to make them feel 'beefier'. not sure.

the weapon connections are nothing special. just flat on flat, which is very easy to do, stable and for these relatively small weapons looks OK. however i think that is on thing contributing to the 'just OK' look of the missle pods. If any of you has a great idea how to make them look nicer (possibly without too much work) I would love to hear that

Maybe angle them opposite of the railguns?

I like the horizontal look, that's for sure. Perhaps change them so there's one support arm and the pods connect as seen in this picture. You may have to modify them so they fit with the look, however.

Also I feel like the engine intake is too large. The rest of it looks good. Might just be me though.

Other than that it looks awesome

The main thing missing from the missile pods in my view is ammo capacity. These things are supposed to be SMS, which are rapid firing cluster missile type thingies. Having 6 individual missiles with no apparent reload capacity seems a bit low.

I did some alternate versions of missile pods for ym crisis suits for precisely this reason, and missile pods are a lower ROF weapon than SMS.

Maybe each missile splits into smaller warheads?

I'm feeling that the drone itself is woefully small for the payload it's carrying. It should be at least 150% of the current size.

Have you seen the tau titan? If you think those guns are big... *shudder*
Oh and have a look at this Kuzao!

Yeah i saw that army project. crisis and broadside drones converted from remoras. very nice project.

The drone body is already 4cm diameter. If i want to base the drone on a reasonable sized base the only way would be to make the guns smaller (.... and who wants SMALLER guns ??!!!! ^^). Maybe finishing the underbelly of the main body will help as then the drone will look more massive.

Yeah I also think the missile are too small. They are pretty much identical to the normal Tau missile pods. I think i have to double them at least. Your round, more realistic missile pods look cool but i think for the roundish drone i should keep square pods.

Im satisfied with the engine intake but the back is not good enough i feel. maybe its really time to redesign the back part and try to do hanging missle pods. Will work on that this weekend. Any ideas for the engine exhausts?

Yea don't use round pods on a round drone. Maybe stack two rectangular ones with avout 10 small missiles in each, or just holes.

Yeah, I ended up doing round ones just because I was drowningin burst cannons I had no use for. My thought process though included a launcher, targetting and magazine system that I thnk more closely resembles the in game stats of the weapon. Other shapes and styles will alsowork

I HATE ENGINES.... sorry for the caps lock. but i wanted to impress upon you how much i start to hate designing engines. this is the first version which i like and by now i have spend about twice as much time on the engine + missle holder than on the rest of the drone. also because this is the first version which i really like it is most likely the final version ^^

the missile pod holder will become a bit more roundish and the main 'mast' will be split in the middle to make it look lighter overall. i also might lower the upper part a bit but overall this look is pretty final. and of course as soon as everything else is finished the drone belly will get small antennas and all the stuff which is usually on the underside of the tau drones.

tell me what you think. but please no suggestions involving changes to the engine -.-

No changes to the engine, but a potential change to the SMS could be to pull the masts down and angle the launchers upward. The things don't need LoS, so why do they need to point anywhere near a potential target go go vertical launch cells!

I like it but maybe make the T shaped structure a bit shorter.

The engine looks great now, but yeah that enormous T looks a bit... out of place I suppose. You are definitely reaching the final version; it looks awesome so far

Reminds me of when I used to use Solidworks. Our High School had bought a 3D printer and with some clearance I could build just about anything. Of course, I wasn't into 40k back then. But man it'd be nice to go back and 3D print some Count's As for techpriests as they DO NOT fit in my current IG army at all.

I love the work you've done so far. Very professional looking, except for that tail of course, but you've already mentioned its a work in progress.

I agree that vertical missile silos are awesome. but i also feel that they belong on nuclear submarines or in the fields of montana.
i worked on the T and made i more skyray like, broke up the lines and made it a bit more soft. also hight and volume was reduced. i think the current version looks strong but light enough

as you can see on the following images i played around with three missile configurations. horizontal vs vertical and double missile vs triple. Triple look a bit over the top in my opinion. not sure if i want that. but the vertical double missile pods i like best so far.

what do you guys think?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
so... finished underbelly, fixed some minor misalignments and assembled the model. here it is. I would like to call this the final version, but im still curious if you would change something.
