Thats a damn scary drone lol.

Ive been contemplating buying a 3D printer for terrain and special models. What printer/modeling software do you use?

modeling mostly inventor professional and the printer is a 3Dsystems projet 5000. i have talked about the printer, material and other things in my previous thread a bit: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/663446.page

I think he's ready for printing! Do you have a shapeways or sculpteo shop? You should.

i have looked into it a bit. now let me state first that i can not sell these because they were designed with a educational licence for inventor. however if i would sell them, the shapeways cost would be rather hefty: 90-120$ per model. also the current model has too many too fine details which could not be printed reliably on cheaper materials. However its a good idea and i might look into it a bit more.

now with no further ado here the pictures:

well, they came out a bit larger than i anticipated ^^

unfortunately they were printed standing up. which means it could be possible that the different surfaces can be seen even after painting. I will try to clean the surface up as much as possible and then see what happens. The intention here was to print them lying down.so that the best surface finish is at the top of the model and all transitions would be on the side.
I will start painting this week and see how it works out.

CnC welcome

Looking lovely. Can I suggest a heavier-duty targeter offset on the top of the disc? Mainly to add some additional detail, so the disc of the drone itself has some visual scale in comparison with other drones. I hasten to add that as a post-print detail, in order to give each one some individuality. The base drone looks great!

Affordable 3D printing is going to do amazing things for the world of mini's. Talk about democratizing the production process....

Yeah, sharing files and designing armies and clip on pieces online, it's going to be an entirely new boost to communities.
Imagine actually downloading an army list and creating from it. I don't necessarily mean 40K at all, but for open systems, it's gonna be amazing.

Very nice. Love the design.

I would pull the railguns back a bit, but thats just me.

Thanks for sharing the process, and can't wait to see a piece painted up.

im afraid affordable high quality printing is still quite far out of our reach. if you consider how long it took laser printer to graduate from corporate only monster machines to arrive at the average joe's house... we are seeing here at the moment the same thing. resin, powder and especially UV cured acrylics are still ridiculously expensive (in the range 1000$ per kg). and i dont really see that changing in the next 5 to 10 years. Of course i would love to be wrong
also i see more and more 3D printer companies going the way the conventional ones went: with proprietary and overpriced print media. canon just lunched a new printer which prints with PLA but needs a special PLA only sold by canon -.- 3D Systems also does not allow 3rd party resins (which kinda makes sense) and even protects each resin cartridge with a chip. i think for the resin it makes sense but they do the same for the support material which is some kind of parafin. if i remember the support cartridges are something like 600$ per kg.

i tried that in the design stage. i swept the weapon holder backwards (and they are still swept backwards) but also i would have preferred the guns a bit further back. sweeping the holders further back would have them attached at the engine which would be rather strange. i also tried connecting the gun more in the middle but that didn't work out if i want to stay close to the original tau rail gun design. i hope that makes sense.... ^^ long story short yeah i think would be nicer, but wasnt as easy as i thought.

glad that you like it the design is based on the remora which does not has any antennas etc. but i see your point. could you elaborate what you have in mind?

sorry for rambling. im nearly falling asleep ^^

Man, this is awesome on so many levels but it also kind of scares me for the future of GW & other mini companies. I wonder how they will combat the ability for individuals to make their own armies once 3d printers are easily accessible to the masses. I was showing this to my room mate (he plays Tau) and he flipped! I think this would also totally make sense for Tau as a prototype army to test on the battlefield. It would be cool to see a command drone that acts as a central communications node, kind of like Tyranid synapse, except the whole army doesn't explode when you kill it

Really wouldn't worry about it. If nothing else, print speed and cost of the machine to reach this level of result rules this out as a method of mass producing for the average gamer.

I totally agree that tau is kinda the logical choice to try this out. And funny that you mention Nids because I was thinking about Nids for my next project.
I believe that there are two kinds of CAD modelers out there: the sculpting guys and the engineers. for us engineers the mechanical stuff is very easy to do while the sculpting guys (visual artists etc) are usually scary fast and good in sculpting organic looking stuff. I also want to get into that but it might take me a while.

LeCacty wrote:Sorry for posting so much but your should legitimately look into casting. You're stuff is amazing.

Actually I have experience with CNC and casting and was planing on doing that as soon as i have some money for the silicone - damn broke right now ^^. Also I'm waiting for my friend to buy a decent vacuum setup as brushing silicon onto moulds to avoid bubbles gets old fast -.-
the interesting thing is that i think that the top surface finish on the printed model would be good enough as a mould master model. this would make it significantly fast and also much easier to produce the master.
