He drowned.

Well, he disappeared while swimming. Which most people assume means he drowned. Some people think a Chinese sub picked him up because he was an agent of theirs, because of course they do.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

The way I heard it told was one day he just walked into the ocean and was never seen again!

And yeah, the UK politics thread is sort of eerie with how well it describes Australian politics right now. We haven't got Corbyn yet, though. And also we have a preferential voting system so at least we can vote for the Greens.

To be fair, there is a lot of dangerous wildlife in your neighbourhood. A shark might have got him, which has been known to happen.

In all my years on God's earth, and all the countries I've visited, I've yet to meet a green voter, anywhere!

I think they're nothing more than a media creation. Where are they?

He was with friends, and said he was going swimming. It isn't the safest place to swim, and the surf was pretty strong. And he'd been unwell for some time.

There's a theory that it was suicide, though I have no idea what the evidence for that is.

Sharks, including great whites, are sometimes seen around Port Phillip, but I don't believe any were sighted at the time. It's possible, though.

I work in Fremantle. The place is full of them.

No, it isn't how it works. If you genuinely were unaware of how parliamentary democracy in Australia works, then the events of the other night should have taught that isn't how it works. Or when Rudd replaced Gillard, or before that when Gillard replaced Rudd.

The party in government has the power to choose it's Prime Minister, and it can do this at any time, in accordance with the rules the party itself establishes for deciding its leader. That's how democracy works in Australia.

Do try to pay attention.

I was responding to the notion that Abbott didn't "deserve" to be in power, and was saying that there was no "deserving" about it, because the leader of the party becomes the PM and that's just how it is. I wasn't talking about how a leader can change within the party based upon the decisions of said party. Context sebster. Context.

And another thing, shouldn't this decision be for the Australian people to decide on who their PM is?

Not quite. Kinda. Maybe.

We don't vote for the leader. There's no presidential election for the PM's job, as it were. We vote for our local member, and the party votes for their leader, and the leader becomes PM if they get voted into government. So whilst people tend to vote for the leader, even if they're not actually voting for the leader, they technically only ever vote for their local member.

[EDIT]: Your English! Why am I explaining this to you? Ah well... I guess some Yank might wander by and want to know what's happening.

I haven't ever not voted Green. The Australian Greens have the best social policies of all the parties here that I've seen. The Green primary vote is around 10% nation-wide, so heaps of people do.

In Australia, because we have a preferential voting system you can vote for who you want and if they don't win your vote will go to the next one down, so you can vote 1. Green 2. Labor or whatever your vote will go to Labor if the Greens don't win. Because of how the House of Representatives works they don't usually get any candidates in despite their share of the vote, but they have got someone in the seat of Melbourne for the past two elections via really concentrated campaigning.

If you ask me, the Greens are pretty much what Labor should be. Unfortunately the Labor party has seemingly lost all ability to show any kind of leadership. I guess our political system generally selects for moral cowardice and we're seeing the results.

Also, okay, I guess he probably didn't walk into the ocean and disappear, then. Which is too bad because that's way more mysterious than "he went swimming and drowned."

Setting aside the pollies themselves; I do really like our democratic system. Sure, it's not perfect, but I often find myself reading about how the systems of some other countries work, and thinking "how the hell is that supposed to be effective?".

If Labour were to evaporate tomorrow, and people voted Green so as not to vote for the Coalition, I think the Greens would need to make some policy shifts, and generally be more rigorous. Much of how they work as a minor party is (quite rightly) based on the idea of asking for a mile, in the hope of getting an inch.

Wow and I thought the usa had hated politicians. At least some people like our most current politicians. It just sounds like Australians would have better luck catching a dingo and baby crocodile and have them fight to the death and having the winner be leader of the country.

Are you not worried about a repeat of the 1975 constitutional crisis?

On a separate note, your neighbours, New Zealand, look set to change their flag, and are most likely to ditch monarchy as well, when Queen Elizabeth dies.

Are we? We're changing the flag but literally no one is talking about becoming a republic.

Canada changed their flag without ditching Liz, I'm sure we can do the same

Here in NZ the Green party is set to surpass Labour as the primary left wing party, I reckon it will happen by the next election

That's more a a condemnation of the NZ Labour than an endorsement of the greens though

Definitely 'hung' parliament... Back in the day, Bob Hawke apparently spent a considerable amount of time sans pants...

Ah, I see. I misread. My bad.
