"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

The local pool of guys I play fluctuates with about 40+ core people I've seen and know for years. Out of that, we had 3 total TFGs.
TFG 1: Understood he was ruining the fun for others, and is actively trying to improve upon it. He is a member of TFGs anonymous, and we're proud of him.
TFG 2: Couldn't get the hint, stopped getting games, and now is only seen rarely in local tournaments. He is bitter about it, but was the most outwardly offensive of the three, and honestly deserved to be ostracized.
TFG 3: I believe that he is just clueless that people are starting to do the same to him as TFG 2. He isn't outwardly a "jerk", but is the worst of the three for list/roll/rules cheating. He has been called on it dozens of times in numerous things from fun pugs to local events. The part that makes him clueless is that all 6 of his opponents in the last event just set up their models, waited for the game to be ready to start, then just called it and packed up. I found out later that a bunch of the guys planed it out as a "feth you" to him*. His response "haha, I'm so good I won 6 games without even shooting!". He really missed the point. He pretty much never gets games now.
*apparently during a few month hiatus I had when the necron book came out, he went around challenging people with weaker armies intentionally. He would regularly make a comment at the start of the game along the lines of "you're playing THAT? You might as well just pack up now". So that was the inspiration of them doing this, rather than just refusing the game up front.

There was a vast and glorious exodus of all the cringy overcompetitive people to Warmahordes.
And then the 40k club doubled in size after they left. I hope they have fun.
Might want to look closer. There might be one more at your FLGS.

Genuine TFG's are rare, and they quickly garner a reputation that makes it easy to avoid them, or at the least get stuck playing them exactly once.

Yeah, I'd say a lot of the time it's a matter of conflicting attitudes. Some people just clash, accusations are thrown around, and people end up leaving. It's sad. Fortunately, the really nasty people are often easy to identify by their attitude.

Tangentially, the worst thing about pick up games in an environment you aren't familiar with is you often end up with the TFG because he is the one no one else wanted to play.
I think this is part of the reason that people who don't have a regular club / flgs seem to sometimes have an exaggerated sense of TFG.

I have yet to meet one to be honest. I've talked with/met people in person that aren't very nice (but are really helpful in an online chat). I have met a few people that are just flat annoying. I've met people whose vocabulary seems to contain only profanity (not directed at any one person). But, I have yet to find a single TFG in the group of people I've met at my local GW Shop. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they are there. But, I haven't met them yet.

Depends, casual games with a few drinks there are zero.
In local tournaments though, everyone throws as much cheese together as they can.
But hey, its a competitive tournament and makes for interesting games.

At our old GW store, we had a group of 4 die-hard TFG's around the time that 'Ard Boyz really took off. They'd spend a good 2-3 months before the initial prelim rounds working out their lists, and then come down to the store to "practice" by typically beating the crap out of Little Timmies and our older regulars. (to the point that our regulars stopped coming entirely)
Eventually, after noticing how the store's sales started to drastically drop off, the staff put our collective foot down and the manager simply took them aside and told them their attitudes had to change, or else they could find somewhere else to play.
The final straws that got them essentially banned from the store;
a) One of these guys managed to win the 'Ard Boyz semi's, thus earning them the 3000pts Fantasy army. They got their giant delivery of Lizardmen, and turned around and tried to return it for a couple of 40k kits and a craptone of cash!
Now okay, exchanging is one thing, as annoying as it would have been having boxes and boxes of Lizardmen that would take years to sell, but this guy got all pouty and enraged that he couldn't simply get about $400 of 'free' cash since he never actually bought anything. (and hence, had no sales receipt)
b) The biggest problem though, was among these gakkers one guy had access to a shrink wrap machine. We only caught on to their group scam after he'd exchanged a Baal Pred for a couple other kits, and upon reselling the supposedly still unopened product, discovered that the box contained only empty sprues.
They had already returned a pair of other kits for exchange, which we then opened to check, and sure enough, those other boxes were empty of product.
The one guy even tried this stunt after the Baal Pred incident, claiming he'd received a box of Termies for Xmas, and when he opened the box, it only contained a single pair of legs. Our manager told him off, reminding him that his other friends had already been caught, and that if they tried it again, he'd call the cops.
We then called over to the GW store near us to tell them to be on the lookout for these guys trying to scam free models, and sure enough, within an hour, we got a call back saying this idiot had tried the same line over at the nearby store!
