Any experience with 30k? Our gaming group will try to get into the fluffy Horus Heresy.
We have the first book (and thus the rules) available.
I'd like to play my company of BA jump packers in 30k. They are troops there. That's a big bonus. No Tacticals necessary.
Moreover, World Eaters seem to be a viable alternative. I'm tempted to get my hands on Angron.

By "first book" I assume you mean HH1: Betrayal?
If so, then what you really want (and need, honestly) are what are commonly called the "red books". The first book contains the core Legion army list (not including a few things added in HH4 and 5, but it does include everything from HH1-3 plus errata and updates). The second book gives the rules and special units, characters, and wargear for all of the legions that were part of Istvaan.

HH6 (coming later this year) will contain the basic rules for Blood Angels, but no special units or characters (that will come later when they get a full write-up, but we do know they get assault cannons, as that is mentioned in the assault cannon entry for Imperial Fists). The basic assault marine unit in 30K isn't that good, sadly (largely because they cost too many points, 250pts for just the first ten dudes in a squad, 15 each for the next ten, but that still ends up being more than 40K assault marines), so you may get some disappointment there.

I wouldn't overlook tactical marines in 30k, when you can take 20 man squads and can fire twice in a turn with fury of the legion. Has its drawbacks of course but they're a solid choice unlike 40k.

Or twenty man foot assault squads. Stick them in a assault claw and give them an apothecary.

Assault marines are indeed expensive, but fast movement in 30k is at a premium, they also have access to power weapons on basic guys so can quite handily kill most non assault based units, if you are going to go all out assault.marine I would suggest angels wrath rite of war to give those marines hit and run, you also get access to more fliers, very blood angel.

Also, the support squad sergeant gets the same special weapon as the rest of the squad, so the combi-weapon is a waste.

Sorry, but shabon dharr is a loyalist and angron is a traitor, so they can't be used in the same army.

Psychic power availability in 30k is different - maybe have a look at that? (can't say for certain, don't own legion marines LRB)

Also, Two librarians in a world eater force doesn't sound very fluffy. Can you imagine a world eater librarian with the butchers nails? he'd never be able to cast anything!
Everything else does sound fluffy though!

They can, actually. The Traitor v. Loyalist only matters when playing Heresy-era campaigns or story missions. Otherwise you can just say you're playing Great Crusade era. That's why Fulgrim has the option to take Fireblade, for example, to represent his pre-heresy version.

According to ADB's fluff, the Librarians didn't have the Nails. Some tried and they all exploded. Literally in some cases. So the few that remained don't have Nails and can't be around their 'brothers' because the Psykers aggravate the Nails. I think they all died when Angron ascended though.

Librarians can't actually be taken in a world eaters force if you're using their rite of war. Unless you were using on of the standard rites?

As of the heresy and even a little after the Heresy the World Eaters still had their librarians. It wasn't until they went total Khorne that they killed them off. That said, aside from 1k sons, librarians were rare in most of the legions.

I've got 3k+ points of HH Iron Hands with Mech. allies. Love HH. So much fun, and really, I strongly feel given the OPness of 40k today, that 30k units and lists transfer just fine into 40k games. I've been on both ends of that swap and really see no imbalance that's anything more than Eldar vs Chaos Marines or the like.

I generally play 30k between 1k and 1850 points. Most of my opponents happen to be 40k players as well. Yes you have to make sacrifices, but that's part of the game.

Did you have specific questions on units and such? I play Night Lords Legion, Thagmata, and Solar Auxilia.

The one thing you need to think about in a 30k army is anti-armour.

Your troops tend to be big blocks of power armour that excells at killing other infantry - whether by stabbing them or riddling them with mass-reactives. However, a heresy era marine list has access to a lot of heavy armour - and more importantly, anything land-raider esque usually turns up with armoured ceramite and flare shields, meaning meltaguns and krak missiles alike are sod all use. Plus, your average heresy player likes having pretty centrepieces to the army, so often goes vehicle-heavy.

Supporting rapier batteries or vindicator destroyers are a good idea.


I'm personally a bit of an oddity - I like the warp cult list, giving me a million really bad infantry with rending in melee - you can easily overrun people in close combat. The other thing to note for a word bearers or warp cult list is your ability to take an allied detachment of chaos daemons; a bloodthirster is a scary-as-hell monster which doesn't count as a lord of war and won't be your warlord - allowing you to fit in something more-or-less expendable that stands a decent chance of breaking a primarch or knight suit across its knee.

30K is as good as 40K is a pile of crap. Two things I see people do with 30K that I personally consider insanity:

1) Play at low points. Everything is much more expensive than in 40K and the point system encourages larger units. Combined with comparatively weak troop choices that take up a significant chunk of your points, you don't really get the fun part of 30K (Primarchs, 20-man Legion squads, things like Spartans, etc.) at low levels, so I feel like these games are just a waste of time.

2) Play primarily against 40K. 40K is simply stronger, with all of its formation and decurions and whatnot, and significantly cheaper troop choices that carry more firepower. 30K/40K can be cross-played if you're "forging the narrative", it's not something to turn to if you are looking for a tight game (although that goes for 40K in general).

I agree, while 30k vs 40k works better, IMO, than the above post believes (just don't play against Eldar), if that's your primary form of play, just don't. HH games should be frequent enough that it's almost it's own league for you to get the experience that is 30k. Many (most?) find its gameplay superior to 40k matches.

I have never played against another 30k army and strictly only play against 40k(because I am the only 30k player I know), usually around the 2k point level. I have not had any issues with balance or getting repeatedly stomped. I shredded an elder scatbike army and took down their Wraithknight in close combat without having a LoW on the field.

Just think about what you want to do with your force. I play mostly Night Lords and most air cav/drop pod lists.
