A bunch of my friends at my FLGS who play more often than I do said that with The Relic mission it is special, and you need to be holding the relic in order to control it. This came up as one of my units had picked up the Relic with a unit, but my opponents models had objective secured (which mine did not) and were in 3", and thus he won the game. Afterwards, other people ruled it in my favor since I was holding the Relic. However, I can't find any mention in the mission's rules saying that you control The Relic in a different way from other Objectives, just special rules for moving it. Which way is the correct way to play it?

if there are no special rules for controlling the objective then objective secured would trump holding the relic

It's easy to assume that people arguing an interpretation you disagree with are just looking for an advantage for themselves... But it's quite often not the case.

By book, the Relic is an Objective, so it can be contested or claimed by units within 3" who aren't holding it.

I believe at least one of the major tournament FAQs rules it that way, too. (Was reading NOVA, ETC, and ITC interchangeably all weekend, so I can't remember which one(s) I saw it in.)

You had to hold it to score it in 6ed but they removed that part of it in 7ed. Now it is just a regular objective they just happen to be able to move around

There are indeed no rules that say to treat the relic any differently when it comes to determining who is claiming it as an objective. There are only special rules for moving it around.

If you walk a wraithknight into my lines holding the relic, I'm either constantly contesting it or holding it if I have some obsec handy.

This must be where the hold over is coming from for them, I'll bring this up next time the mission is rolled. Thanks!

Huh. You guys play that the carrying model's entire base becomes the objective?

Yeah. Though there's no real rules support for that being correct. If it isn't, where on the model's base is the objective, and what's stopping you from moving it around? We decided it was much simpler to say "if this guy is holding the objective and you're within 3" of him, you're within 3" of the objective."

Nope, just the base of the relic, as it never actually leaves the table.

It's not. It's in contact with it.

Nothing, providing the model 'holding' it moves, as the relic moves with the model who is holding it. There are no rules allowing the relic to move by itself.

I have literally never seen it played that way. Even at tourneys* we always just say "this guy picks it up" and remove the relic until that guy drops it or dies, at which point it shows up again where he died or dropped it. *Including big ITC events.

If that's the case, do you have to make sure the relic is b2b with another guy if you plan to hand it off or does it "jump?" If you move 6", can you then move the relic from behind you to in front of you, possibly on a large base moving it a good deal more than 6" in one phase? What happens when people assault you and have to stand on the relic? Can you move the relic during a combat? What if the relic doesn't fit anywhere around you after you move thanks to impassable terrain and enemy models?

There's so many weird situations that come up with that version that aren't handled by the rules. The "guy who picks it up becomes a walking objective" version is very easy and plays nicely with the rest of the rules IMO.

The relic rules cover this. The two models have to be in base contact, and you just move the relic from one to the other.

If you move 6", can you then move the relic from behind you to in front of you, possibly on a large base moving it a good deal more than 6" in one phase?

The only requirement is that the relic remain in base contact. There is no requirement for it to remain in contact with the same point on the model's base. So yes, so long as the model only moves 6", there is nothing stopping the relic from moving further in that manner.

What happens when people assault you and have to stand on the relic?

They stand on the relic.

I don't think there is anything in the current rules that prevents models from moving over objective markers.

Can you move the relic during a combat?

Only if the model holding it moves. Again, there are no rules for moving the relic by itself.

What if the relic doesn't fit anywhere around you after you move thanks to impassable terrain and enemy models?

Unless you're using a marker that is bigger than your model's base, that situation is unlikely to ever occur.

There's so many weird situations that come up with that version that aren't handled by the rules.

You just presented one situation that isn't covered by the actual rules, and it's one that is unlikely to ever actually be a problem.

The "guy who picks it up becomes a walking objective" version is very easy and plays nicely with the rest of the rules IMO.

Sure, it's a workable house rule. Just not a necessary one, IMO.

We just keep the Relic in b2b with the carrier. I've never see it be a problem before. (I've seen folks park vehicle on top of it and THAT become a problem, but never an issue with the carrier.

I've always played keeping the relic in b2b with the carrier as well, although I'm really liking the sounds of the "pick up" house rule. I might try that out next warhammer night.
