But not the alleged contents. Even though simply saying "Thank you for your courage" doesn't actually validate everything she has done, and is fairly believable (especially if you haven't followed the case/don't quite understand the requirements of her job).

I'm struggling to think of anyone who wouldn't want to meet the Pope, given the opportunity. Even the most hardline atheists I know would still love to have a chance to talk to him. It's hardly "stupid stuff" on her part. (Apart from the bragging afterwards, but that's up for debate)

So the Pope must not like the gays as much as he's been leading onto. Seems all the better to me. Lets the Gay Catholics still know that their church's official diagnosis of "inherently disordered" probably hasn't really changed, even if the Pope isn't willing to personally judge them for it.

Probably not best move by pope, best to leave internal matters alone in country, especially ones that are controversial.

I'm not sure you can accurately determine someone's personal feelings based simply on the people they meet with.

I read about this this morning, when the Pope's office confirmed it.

Pretty interesting. The Pope seems pretty committed to keeping everyone off balance.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Ye. That confused me too. This is a very odd thing to do. She is not Catholic, seems to come from a far more right wing denomination than the Catholic church, and this is an issue he did not need to get involved in at all.

With this issue it's probably wise to take anything with a grain of salt, but still worth sharing:

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/10/01/vatican-source-pope-blindsided-by-meeting-with-controversial-kentucky-clerk/

(CBS) — Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich is on his way to Rome tonight.

Before he left, he spoke out for the first time on that controversial meeting between Pope Francis and Kim Davis, the county clerk from Kentucky who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Cupich in essence told CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine not to read too much into it.

A highly placed source inside the Vatican claims the Pope was blindsided.

As Pope Francis was addressing a joint session of Congress, then thousands more gathered outside on the west lawn, Kim Davis, who’d become the poster child for opponents of same-sex marriage, was getting ready for a meeting with him at the Vatican embassy.

It is a meeting some charge was orchestrated by the man who lived there, the Pope’s representative here, Carlo Maria Vigano.

Not even the Papal Spokesman Federico Lombardi knew about it ahead of time. Nor did the leadership of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which would have opposed it.

Others claim the Pope knew about the meeting and had ordered Vatican diplomats, perhaps even Vigano, to set it up.

CBS 2’s Vatican source doesn’t think so.

A close advisor to Pope Francis tweeted that the Pope was, in his words, “exploited” by those who set up what the CBS 2 source says was a “meeting that never should have taken place.”

Some call it an attempt by highly placed church leaders in the U.S. to diminish the impact of the Pope’s visit.

Archbishop Cupich tried to downplay both the meeting and its significance.

“It is his way of saying that walls of communication need to come down. Meeting with someone is not an endorsement of that person’s position,” Cupich said.

The questions of what did the Pope know and when did he know continue being debated in newspaper headlines, blog posts and on twitter feeds.

Pope Francis presides over what promises to be a contentious three-week meeting of bishops in Rome, with a number of hot-button issues on the table.

NPR has this now.. (posted Oct 2, at 7am)

Responding to a flood of interest in the surprise revelation that Pope Francis met with controversial county clerk Kim Davis, the Vatican says the event shouldn't be seen as an endorsement of all of Davis' views. Davis has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Rowan County, Ky.

Davis was one of "several dozen" people the pope met at the end of his visit to Washington, D.C., the Vatican says.

News of the private meeting surfaced days after Francis and Davis met at the Vatican embassy, opening a new prism through which to view a papal visit that had focused on issues such as climate change and immigration.

After the meeting, Davis told ABC News, "Just knowing the pope is on track with what we're doing, and agreeing, you know, kind of validates everything."

Acknowledging that the meeting has "continued to provoke comments and discussion," Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi addressed the topic Friday, expanding on his earlier refusal to provide details.

From Rome, NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports:

"After issuing a tight-lipped statement that did not deny the Davis-Pope meeting took place, the Holy See spokesman today issued a statement saying several dozen persons had been invited to the Vatican embassy last week to greet the pope as he prepared to leave for New York.

"The pope, the statement added, did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis, and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.

"When news of the meeting broke after the Pope's return to Rome, it had the appearance of having been furtive and contrasted with Francis' open and transparent style. It also cast a shadow over the pope's overwhelmingly successful visit to the United States."

Sylvia adds that Father Thomas Rosica, English language assistant at the Holy See Press Office, says that Pope Francis may not have understood "the impact" a visit with Davis might have in the U.S.; Rosica also says the group that included Davis was selected by the nunciature, the Vatican's diplomatic office in D.C.

On Wednesday, Davis and her legal team at the Liberty Counsel said that the meeting had been brief, and that the pope had thanked Davis for her courage and told her, "Stay strong."

News of the meeting first emerged in the conservative magazine Inside the Vatican, which said it was "arguably, the most significant meeting, symbolically, of the entire trip."

Davis, who is an an Apostolic Christian, said the pope gave her and her husband two rosaries, which they would give to Davis' parents, who are Catholic.

Here's Lombardi's full statement, which was released in both English and Italian:

"The brief meeting between Mrs. Kim Davis and Pope Francis at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, DC has continued to provoke comments and discussion. In order to contribute to an objective understanding of what transpired I am able to clarify the following points:

"Pope Francis met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City. Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the Pope's characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.

"The Pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects."

There are plenty of other people I'd feel are more holy (those Sadhu's in India for example).
All I get from the Pope is he lives in extreme luxury and is head of a terrible organization (telling people in Africa not to use condoms, despite the AIDS thing makes you a terrible person).
I don't care how much climate change or whatever he says.
