I am looking to start putting my army in sturdier cases since I am actually starting to paint them. Right now I have about 12000 points of orks with a lot of walkers and other vehicles. I am looking for a good place to get cases to transport these things without hopefully spending several hundred dollars on one case. I am looking at the largest citadel case and it doesn't look bad but transporting the orkanauts and flyers would still be an issue. Now I could move those things separately but if I can get a case with foam that would be great. I am looking for info on how you guys transport your larger armies with odd shaped models effectively.
|
My Armies:
Orks about 15000-16000 mostly unpainted but slowly being worked on
Militarum Tempestus about 2000 points just built
Inquisition about 2000 points unpainted
Officio Assassinorum 570 unpainted
I dont paint quickly |

For smaller models generally I use the Battle Foam bags, they run maybe $30-$40 on sale and you can customize them (unit trays, large trays for drop pods and such). Army Transport and Motor Pool are also good choices. For any large and awkward pieces (Defilers, Soul Grinders, Daemon Princes or Trukks), I generally use a shoe box or another large box to carry that, my dice, templates, rulers, and BRB and codices in.

A box full of filler to keep your models from bouncing around is a good solution. I use plastic tupperware and paper towels.

Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts

I have a massive collection as well. If you have the money the battle foam bags are great but when talking about so many models the bags can end up being a huge sum.
What I use is plastic storage totes with self cut and assembled foam trays. If you purchase the foam in bulk from an online supplier, use titanium sheers and knife, and some of the foaming gorilla glue you can make enough cases to hold a ~400 model army with knights, tanks, and aircraft for about 150 usd. I have also found that since my cases normally have more and thicker foam than the battlefoam cases and a hard shell with some empty space pockets on the side there have been less breaks in my custom cases than the battlefoam, GW, et.c cases I have (BTW I also have pretty much a case from every manufacturor except table war...I need to get one of those).
The secret sauce BTW is to use 0.75 to 1 in thick firm foam as the base with the walls made from a foam whose thickness is the same as the height you need (1.5 in is usually easiest) semi firm foam.

I’m a big fan of KR. It’s not quite a pricy as battlefoam, and gets the job done.
If you are looking at getting anything custom cut, it’s not going to be cheep for an army your size. If the budget is tight, a DIY answer is probably best.

This sounds pretty good. Everything else will be very pricy for me just due to all the dreads and such. Is there any place that you normally get the foam from? And are you just talking the thin plastic storage containers that can be bought just about anywhere?

This is the foam I normally use. http://www.thefoamfactory.com/packagingfoam/charcoalfoam.html
The shipping is even free after 75 usd. I have made cases for ~30,000 pts of models at this point (me and my brother) and I have only spent 160 usd on foam and 60 usd on glue. Your total project costs should be ~150 usd depending mostly on the plastic totes selected.
BTW make sure you have a very sharp knife at least 3" long to use, preferably one with a blade you can swap as you will need to sharpen it regularly. A utility knife with swappable blades works wonders for me.
Also I use this type of gorilla glue. It foams up a bit and penetrates the foam making a very tough bond. As long as the bottom foam is on a flat surface (like inside the case you are making) the foam will rest well and the glue will won't come out. Also if you do get this on your model it doesn't glue to plastic or paint sealant so it peals right off. http://www.gorillatough.com/gorilla-glue
For purchasing the plastic totes I recommend sams club. They sell some pretty good ones for 7 usd a tote. As long as you lock them with the combination wire locks they work perfectly.

forget all those normal transport methods. They don't work for orky conversions or are way to expensive.
Make your own transport case. Ingredients:
-Some foam you already have for the easy to transport stuff
-a large sturdy easy to transport plastic storage box.
-Scavenged furniture or mattress foam.
-some glue
-an electric knife or something else to cut it efficiently
You should be able transport an ork appocalypse army this way.

This stuff looks bad, but it works just as good as expensive foam ( it is actually really expensive if you have to buy it) and is used in almost all couches and mattresses.

Thanks guys. Ya I found a large case that will fit all my infantry for pretty cheap so I ordered that and in our house we have a very large suitcase with wheels that shall be converted. It's probably 4x2x1. So its about chest high a foot deep and 2-3 feet wide. I figure that should fit all my vehicles including the two stompas but we shall see.

Hey, I thinks that's you Chris, it's Seth from legions lol.
I suggest big plastic containers with foam for the dreads and tanks, they are really great for vehicles I have found. Also, of you need some pluck able foam I may be able to get some for free for ya from my dad's work lol.

The plastic storage cases you can get in the fishing or hardware department or even the crafts department work well for figures
For tanks and other larger things, I use the double wide cardboard card boxes. Put one layer of tanks in, use the "divider" piece as a second floor and put in a second layer of tanks.
I can get 8 LRBT into one. I place the turrets in front of them.

I use a battlefoam 1520XL with the extra piece on top. It would probably fit almost your entire Ork collection with the right foam.
