Ive been looking into buying contemptors but I am worried they aren't good. Are my suspicious wrong?

PS I play Black Templar/Imperial Fists

Yes they are good, not amazing, depending on the ones you use and loadout

They're better than regular dreads, at least. They can have better weapons and have their own 5++ so they don't have to hide in cover.

But, if your meta is one where dreads are already largely useless, then Contemptors won't fare much better.

I would run mine with double power fist and double heavy flamers

They're good (in certain configurations) but pricey. I'd leave it a little while - their 30k rules just got updated and there's rumours of a plastic one coming out.

I use dreads a lot with the new Gladius formation

They are more survivable than a standard dread, more expensive, but they also come with fleet, which is pretty good for an assault unit, I use mine in 30k with dual claws and graviton guns for HP stripping, 40k I use them as khorne Contemptors and they ruin people's days, rage. Rampage and fleet or pretty boss.

I'd say wait for them to get 4 attacks standard like their regular counterparts, and then the melee variant won't be so bad.
The range variants aren't too bad, though. They just end up being expensive is all.

They are worth it almost just for the Kheres, honestly of the best weapons in the game for doing exactly what it's designed for

Whats the kheres profile?

I believe it's assault 6, and you gain skyfire and interceptor if you don't move. So when you take 2 you fire both (12 shot) and they're not TL.

Is that right?

Mostly - the Kheres is Heavy 6, and the Contemptor-Mortis can get Skyfire & Interceptor with any weapons it's carrying.

I dont think the mortis variant fits my play style since we have a house rule that if you dont have fliers or a solid counter to them, your opponent wont bring one

Personally I really enjoy my Kheres Mortis. He has more than made his points back each game and not all against flyers. Those 12 rending shots can really put a hurt on a lot of MEQ and the Mortis puts him at BS5.

Contemptors are always BS5 regardless of mortis

Maybe in 30k, but Mortis (and normal) Contemptors are BS4 with the 40k Rules, as of IA2 2nd Edition. Or IA Apocalypse 2nd Edition before it...

EDIT: And no, Contemptors are inferior in close combat at the moment as compared to Ironclads. Maybe whenever Forge World gets around to buffing the 40k Variety, but I wouldn't hold your breath considering the Tau Release and their 30k production.

You are absolutely correct. I forgot I put a Legacy of Glory on mine to hit BS5.

normal dreads have 4 attacks base. you can reach up to 6 attacks on a charge

contemptors are best with ranged weapons

Eh, Normal Adeptus Astartes dreds have 4 attacks base. BA, SW, DA and GK are all still living in the world of 2 base attacks a pop.

In fact, the rest of the game is living in the world of "walkers are mostly useless", while SM tote their "I am better at close combat than a soul grinder" dreadnoughts.

Contemptors do have one advantage over regular dreads in close combat: if your opponent doesn't have anything strength 7 or higher, they can't hurt the Contemptor. So if krak grenades are all they got, sucks to be them.

At least my DA codex tells me that they have 4 attacks.
