Contemptors have WS5 and fleet, how are they inferior?
They have WAY less attacks and are more costly. 5 attacks at WS4 is better than 3 at WS5. Drop Pods fix the lack of fleet as well.
Contemptors have 4 with 2 CCW and they can also take drop pods...
And an Ironclad has five with a Power Fist and Seismic Hammer.

I've had great results running a Mortis Contemptor with two Kheres pattern assault cannons and shoulder mounted cyclone missile launcher. x12 S6 rending shots is really effective at wiping out infantry, the missile launcher finishes stuff off. It has interceptor and skyfire so if you stay still the turn your opponent brings on a flyer you can pump all those shots at it, or open fire on anything that outflanks or deepstrikes near it. My favourite unit in my Iron Hands army, absolutely rocks.
This is my one. It was pretty devastating in the last game I used it:

I'd have to say no. Lascannons can be more cheaply acquired elsewhere.

From a strict RAW POV, I can see his point. The hammer has a built in gun, and you are swapping it away. Presumably still with the gun built into it. And it says nothing about the chainfist having anything built in.
But then you can look up at the picture, with the chainfist with a meltagun hanging off it, and RAI becomes pretty clear. Plus the hammer/chainfist is a roughly equivalent swap on it’s own merits. If you loose the gun, it becomes a very lopsided trade.

Any model may replace its seismic hammer with a chainfist................................ free
You only replace the hammer, not the meltagun. The picture confirms.
And this has honestly got to be one of the wonkiest RAW/ RAI problems ever

Eh fair enough. Then I'dsuggest giving it the chainfist with a melta gun ensure you cut into whatever av targets you are up against.

Are we talking about the contemptor or the ironclad?

Ah good. Another unnecessary kick in the nuts for BA players...

On the other hand, BA have access to the "special" BA Contemptor. What makes it special? It still has the old blood weapons that keep on attacking as long as they hit.
Does it? I would've thought it just lists the war gear as 'Blood Talons' and points to the BA codex...

It does just point to the codex. 'See codex Blood Angels for additional rules'. Which there aren't any but Shred, which it already has in IA:A. I almost got excited there.

Chaos contemptors get an extra attack with a close combat weapon, and an extra attaxk with a chain fist so they can be bumped up to 5 attacks plus they can get mark of Khorne and extra armour.
