Personally I would be all aboard with this plan. The Canadian soldiers I had the honor to serve with were great, literally the same as US soldiers in almost every way except that when I asked them if they had seen the Bruins game the night before they were able to answer with Yes, and usually followed by some kind of derisive jab at my team .

What say you fellow Americans and Canadians? would you be ok with that plan going through?

I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you mess with me, I'll kill you all

I wouldn't really care. I don't see much of a downside to integrating our forces since we are linguistically and culturally similar.

No. The US would invade somebody, we'd disagree, and then we'd need to find a way to keep our troops out or have Quebec Balkanize.

Given how culturally similar the two nations are, how closely aligned foreign policy is, how many conflicts have been fought side by side, and how common defense outlooks & scenarios for both would be, there is certainly merit to the concept.

That said, I can't see either wanting to give up the full control of their sovereignty in that way.

Hopefully we'd have some sort of civilizing influence on them. Canadians fighting under the command of US armed forces would be like the Tau Empire with their Kroot auxilliaries.

There's probably a lot of merit in aligning capabilities and weapon platforms, so the two forces can fight alongside each other more effectively. A bit like you already see with NATO, but much closer.

But combining command is a terrible idea. Imagine the first time a Canadian general sent a US formation to a dangerous position to take the majority of an operation's casualties, or vice versa? Fortunately this is never going to happen.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Didn't Canada do that with Britain? Does Canada really want to be dragged into never ending warfare?

Also, I'm pretty sure there's a old law that still says Queen Elizabeth is head of the Canadian military...

Would have to get her to sign that one off.

Some of my relatives would disagree with that. They lost the first one and all of the sudden people started walking around speaking English...

Canada, criminally polite, right up until the moment they beat you with a moose.

I'd be more interested in seeing a universal Postal system for both countries. There's really no excuse for a package mailed 100 miles North of New York to take an extra week or two.

Interesting. The Dutch and German militaries actually have an integration program like that going on. Not that the Netherlands really has much of a military, but still.

Nope. The Governor General, who is the Queen's official representative in Canada, is the head of our military.

As for combining our military with our southern neighbours? No way.
A portion of our gear is highly maintained museum quality, our training is better due to limited numbers, and we're not giving up our kilts & pipes + the beer, syrup and Timmies rations.

Nor are we taking back Bieber... You guys 'won' him fair and square in the hockey semi-finals in Sochi last year!
