I'm a 5th ed 40K fan, and I'm considering starting playing with Forge World's Horus Heresy Legion lists and have a few questions.

1. On the surface HH seems more balanced than 40K proper, is this the case ?
2. I miss marine mech as it's mostly junk in 40K now. Is mech viable in Horus Heresy ?
3. One for the UK residents - I withdrew from playing at clubs/shops/tournaments as I didn't get on with 6th/7th. Is there a HH tournament/organised play scene in the UK ?

Do it and don't look back! It's what 40k should be.

1 - Generally yes. There's no unbound, Lords of War are more tightly controlled (up to 25% of points on Lords of War), Str : D is a lot less potent and the majority draw off the Crusade Legion List with special rules for each Legion that vary the list in some way such as adding Legion specific special units, characters and particular rites. Also, make sure you go through and play the wide array of different battle types, such as raids and the like. Mechanicum, Solar Auxilia and Knight lists are also Horus Heresy'd and Word Bearers can bring Dæmon allies.
2 - Oh yes, want to run Land Raider Proteus Squadron of 3 for 600pts (660 points for an armoured ceramite headache) in a single heavy support slot for a wall of AV14? Allowed. 9 Predators taking up 3 Heavy Support squads of most types? Allowed. Run an armoured spearhead list that allows you take Land Raider dedicated transports? Allowed! Though, 30k has masses of firepower so expect to take (and cause) a shedload of damage. Things don't last long, but you get lots of it!
3 - Don't know that one if I'm honest.

Marine Bashes in 40k == Unfun
Marine Bashes in 30k == Fun

Sometimes I think FW should do all the rules writing.

One other thing I forgot to mention. If you've not seen one of Forgeworld's big black books in the person, you're in for a treat. You'll then be forced to wonder about the appalling value of the mainline codex books and the laughable special editions...

Forge World stuff is consistently high quality.
If they had full rights for pricing they'd outsell GW by the shedload.

Thanks folks. It seems as though HH is what I'd hoped it would be.

We play 30k atm. Our experience is that its more balanced than 40k. We only play Marine armies atm. No Mechanicum. Mech is very viable in HH. Actually you need a showcase piece in your army like a Spartan tank.

We mix playing 40k codices vs. 30k armies fairly frequently, FWIW.

But the funnest games I've played to date have been 30k army vs. 30k army, and 30k army vs. Orks.

If you mix 40k and 30k, it will be better to play at higher pt levels.
At smaller pt levels, 40k armies may have an advantage.

Is it acceptable to use regular 40k marines as 30k? It would be fun to try, just really don't have the budget to buy more marines

It's fairly balanced but there is still ranged D and imp knights which are two of the I felt spoilt 40k over recent years. That said, no super formations which really wreck 40k atm, allies arent as easy to abuse and I found people generally play it more for fluff and fun.

That being said I play word bearers which can be horrendously unbalanced if you want to play to win but I tend to keep it chilled out and in my area we swap invisibility for the old puppet master which is far more fun.

It's not cheap and can sometimes be a little repetitive due to a slight lack of diversity with legion units but it's really good fun.
Few people I play it with call it 40k for grownups which whilst I don't fully agree with its not far off. Less powergamers more drinking fun gamers!

Hmm now that i looked into it it does look really cool to play. the lack of ready rules for thousand sons is disheartening, but all the other forces look really cool
