There's perfectly natural organic bacon out there, so never fear!
It's the whole processed meat (or processed anything) that's the problem, and the companies that put tons of preservatives in stuff because they want it to sit on a store shelf for a year. I've been trying to eat more natural stuff lately, but it's tough.. the unnatural stuff is everywhere :(
Me and my GF were watching the walking dead the other night, and we started wondering if all the preservatives we eat makes our corpses last longer.. cuz you'd think after so many seasons a lot of zombies would start dying off cuz they turn into skeletons eventually... could bacon be the cause of the coming zombie apocalypse?

This is actually not true. There is almost no evidence that things like growth hormones given to livestock are harmful to humans. The chemicals are actually incapable of interacting with our bodies because they are, surprise, very specific to the animal they are given to. I could inject myself with rBST(bovine somatrophin. are stands for recombinant, which just means this particular chemical was created artificially, although it is chemically identical to the natural BST which the cow's body produces), I could drink it. Nothing would happen, to our body its just some protein. Our body only reacts to HST(human somatotrophin). And so little of it gets into the product(milk) that it is no different from it not being there in the first place. Sure, using it does wear the cow out faster, but thats not really a problem. Overall we can produce more food for less energy, and thats a good thing.
Europe's food safety standards are far too strict. They're basically jumping at shadows and believing every tinfoil hat level theory as to what isn't safe.
And by the way in the US the use of any kind of hormones in poultry has been outlawed since the 1950s.

Zombies on TV and film usually have a special magic that stops their body tissues from decaying or desiccating any more than is necessary to produce exciting special visual effects.
In reality, zombies would be quickly consumed by natural factors such as bacteria, moulds, and carrion eaters.

I always thought this is where animated Skeletons came from. When you raise the dead, they turn into a zombie, eventually the flesh rots away leaving only the bones which continue to move. At least in high fantasy.

It's a fair indication of the care that went into the rest of the product...
I have seen pet food more recognisable in content than some ready meals or frozen ones. I've eaten modern Quorn with better texture. So it's also about the respect of the consumer.
I guess I'm not a militant vegetarian, I'm more of a fairness appreciator.
Steady there buddy! The existence of processed meat has nothing to do with farmers or the methods they employ. Farmers breed animals for whole cuts of meat, all their efforts are focused on this. There is no money in producing poor carcasses smothered in fat. All animals are graded within the EU to make sure they achieve carcass muscle to fat ratios. Processed meat appears as a time honoured tradition on behalf of the processor who buys the animal and extracts the maximum amount from it. In days gone by after the whole cuts had been removed the remainder was removed with boning knives and the rest literally grown to the dogs. Now processes have improved and the processors can remove pretty much everything. Here lies part of your problem. Some bits just shouldn't be eaten.
If you are suggesting that there are somehow contaminants in the animal as a result of some farming process I would love to know what they are? The UK has some of the strictest farming guidelines in the world, something many UK farmers are rightly proud of. Yet we import cheap meat from around the world which weakens the overall integrity of the food industry. Practices such as routine steroid implantation in cattle has been outlawed in the UK for decades but remains common practice in the USA amoungst others. Steriods as we know have health risks. If in doubt buy British, look out for that little red tractor logo!
When I refer to cheap farming methods, I'm not blaming any farmers for the shape it comes out at the other end, more that if a company is doing that to the food it produces, not every company is conscientious about where they buy the meat from. If they can get it for 2p less per kilo, they will.
Look at the whole "horse burger" scandal, that was a chain of people not caring. The consumers didn't care where the cheap meat came from until they were told. The supermarkets didn't ask questions because it was a cheap supply. Every step between fork and the animal being alive had an element of blame, including the people eating it.
There were a lot of people who weren't angry at the idea of eating horse, but were angry at not being given the choice or information. Hopefully this has had a positive knock on effect of folk being discerning when buying. For now.
Mostly I was thinking about chicken, which is stupid cheap. I know there have been steps made in Europe to protect both farmers and their birds, but they do get the rough end of the stick.
I don't imagine anything contaminates the food from the farm, no. If I wrote in a way that gave that impression, I didn't mean to. My whole point was responsibility. That starts at consumer level.
Basically I just feel that if I'm eating something that died, it should have died for better reason than unpleasant white cubes on a pizza. Maybe that makes me a food snob.

Its not the preservatives that are the issue, when animal protein is cooked using a high temperature (frying bacon for example) certain chemicals are produced that can damage DNA and damaged DNA=increased cancer risk.

@ buttery commissar.
Agree chicken is stupid cheap. Last year I invested in a new free range broiler chicken unit. I finish around 150,000 birds per annum I on it using a slow growing bird with birds in colony sizes of 7,500. The cost of these smaller operations is huge, for the same capital outlay I could have built a unit designed around indoor fast growing chicken and finished around 420,000 per annum. I would also have been able to avail of the government biomass grant to heat the indoor birds. But as a farm we decided to go free range it was a gamble that's working ok at the minute. Returns aren't close to the indoor unit, largely because of the biomass grant but I still believe in good farming practice and am proud of the new unit, it compliments how I try and run all the other enterprises. Sadly few people in the UK want our product. 90% goes to waitrose shelves and most will never even see them. Free range chicken accounts for a minute corner of the market, organic smaller again.and yet so many people I meet tell me they buy free range..... Free range has won the egg battle but is loosing the chicken meat war. People say the want good farming practices but are rarely prepared to pay for it.

Chicken is traditionally the cheap meat for poor people. In these days of economic woe and depressed incomes, it unfortunately means that poor people want the cheapest meat they can get, and will stick with non-free-range.

Aye, Knockagh. And to be clear, I didn't post here out of any smugness (I'm agreeable enough that if I go to your house and you're cooking, I'll eat the same food regardless), but there was an air of "I don't understand vegetarians." and I wanted to give reasons someone who isn't an extremist would be one. Mainly that I feel there are limits, and allowing cost to dictate morals / health is mine.
I may not know all ins and outs, but I'm not even a believer in "All big corporations = evil" either, many answer to so many regulations that it makes their jobs impossible. And those regulations protect folk, who then sit and complain about the companies...

Cancer or not, meat is an important part of a good human diet. Just be moderate, like in everything. I am also pretty sure that more naturally produced things are a lot healthier than modern industrial stuff filled with chemicals.
Anyways, I only very rarely eat bacon, which is a pity, because I really like it.

On topic. Past those days around the Bacon crisis there was another study that said Alcohol increses twice the risk of cancer. All this Bacon cancer thing is a complete gak if you ask me. My dad was a sport and health freak, he never smoked a cigarette in his life and he was drinking fresh fruit juices all day....died from cancer. My grandfather, he was a colonel in the army, never smoked cigarattes, he was almost 90% vegan... died from Cancer.
My mom smokes since she was 18 years old, she is that kind of person that is with the worst eating habbits and eats almost any kind of bad food. She is 60+ and is alive and kicking.
