Recently, I've watched the movie Starship Troopers on Netflix. It's a good movie and you should watch it. Anyways, being the 40k nerd that I am, I have a question.
Who do you believe would win. Obviously, galaxy on galaxy, it would be a slaughter of those marines and bugs, but what if the Imperium attacked with their basic HUMAN soldiers. So no modified men (I.E. Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Grey Knights, Adeptus Soriatis, Inquisitors, etc). Psykers are included, but no Aliens (Ogryns, those dead space dwarves, Kroot, etc). For Starship this includes Bugs. Humans with transplants are allowed.
So, what is your opinion?
I have an idea, but I want to see your answers.

Gahhhh... That movie really grinds my gears after having read the book.
I'm going to say Imperium wins just because of how much I hate that mockery of the real Starship Troopers.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched the movie, but IIRC they were very close to guardsmen level. The movie was probably as close as an IG vs. Nids fight as we are going to see on the silver screen.
If you go back to the book, the MI are one of the core sources for space marines, and power armor in general.

The whole "40k vs X" thing never really makes sense to me. 40k is just so.. Well, fething insane. It's big and stupidly OP for the sake of being big and stupidly OP. A single warhound titan could utterly crush most armies put forth by other universes, basically earning a ratio of 1 warhound per planet that needs to be conquered.
So yeah, 40k > Troopers.
King Pariah wrote:Gahhhh... That movie really grinds my gears after having read the book.

I read the book before watching the movie, and I have to say I enjoyed them both. I get just how distant the movie is from the actual book, but I still found the movie fun in a campy way. I also heavily prefer the bugs as they're presented in the movie vs how they are in the book. Sapient spider people, while interesting, just doesn't tickle me in quite the same way.

I enjoyed both the book and the movie for different reasons. I like that they're so distinct. The animated series was good too since it blended more of the book into it.
Also Imperium hands down. All three versions. The war is taking place over a few solar systems of habitable space. AA tiny tiny area. Their technology is primitive in some cases simple bullets. The IG alone would role them without assistance. The walkers in the books are shown to be weak to missiles and heavy weapons. So it's not like they're as tanky as a tank or anything to small arms fire. They are resistant to it but not invincible.
So their mechs are a weird mix of Tau and IG technology.

I adore that movie for the ludicrous satire that it is, but nobody seems to have weapons with an effective range of more than 15 feet in that film, and their body armor doesn't stop a damn thing. Basically their equipment would make a Cadian look like a Space Marine.

As others have said, I liked both for different reasons, but I vote for the Imperium. They've just got more Dakka than the Starship Troopers.
On another note, I do imagine commercials in the Imperium to be like the Starship Troopers commercials in-movie. "See your nearest Astra Militarum recruiter to defend the Imperium of Man! Would you like to know more?"

There are a number of movies you could splice together to make a 40k flick. Starship Troopers can provide a lot of good clips. There is a lot of good IG crossover stuff there. I agree that their propaganda is very imperium.

Starship Troopers, easily. Remember, they have power armor that space marines would be jealous of, and their standard combat strategy is "drop in from orbit, nuke everything, and be miles away nuking the next target by the time your first salvo hits its target". It doesn't matter how many guardsmen you have when the enemy treats nukes like frag grenades.
morganfreeman wrote:The whole "40k vs X" thing never really makes sense to me. 40k is just so.. Well, fething insane. It's big and stupidly OP for the sake of being big and stupidly OP.
But, on the scale of scifi as a whole, it's still only a mid-range power. For example, a single Culture civilian transport could kill everything in the 40k setting, if it could actually sink so low that it would use such a clumsy approach to winning. So 40k vs. X is fine, you just have to pick an interesting enough opponent.
Heinlein's political argument in Starship Troopers (you know, the entire reason he wrote the book).

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

If it's IG vs MI, with no outside forces involved, then the MI takes it hands-down, since every soldier in the MI wears power armor.
The book Starship Troopers is where the concept of powered armor originates. Everything that SM PA can do comes from the concepts Heinlein presented there.

If you are talking movie, the power difference in space says imperium wins, even on the ground if space is won ground is won(or the IoM takes the sore loser route and exterminatuses ).
as a side note don't see starship troopers 2, it sucks.
I would love to see the grenade from the book that talks make it into 40k, small explosive that makes you take a moral check when thrown at a unit and then goes off next turn.
This was a special bomb, one issued to each of us for this mission with instructions to use them if we found ways to make them effective. The squawking I heard as I threw it was the bomb shouting in skinny talk (free translation): "I'm a thirty second bomb! I'm a thirty second bomb! Twenty-nine! Twenty-eight! Twenty-seven!..."
If you are talking book starship troopers, whole different story for who wins.

@Paragrine: What good do nuclear hand grenades do when the IG can literally drown the foe with bodies. In all seriousness, though, IoM worls because the Imperial Navy would take Void Superiority, no problem (which equals win).

Probably cost, remember, it’s an older movie. special effects were not as easy back then
And the ability to see the actors. If you look at, for example, the new Iron Man movies, that’s what all the characters would look like. Tight face shots, and then CG armor wide shots. But when all the characters are in armor, you are going to have a bunch of faces acting at each other, and that’s not very engaging cinema.

They had a choice of real looking bugs or real looking power armor, and decided real bugs was of better value.

It doesn't help that the "guys in cardboard armour" have the combined tactical acumen of two drunk gnats*.
What's that - a group of horrific alien infantry with giant scything talons but no ranged weapons to speak of?
We should charge at them!
What's that - a group of armoured nuns with flamethrowers and other short-range weapons, but no long-ranged artillery to speak of?

When the book version of the Troopers turn up, it becomes a slightly more even fight. Both are Power Armoured, both have nuclear weapons (technically)... although Sisters are probably the only ones who can take a nuke to the face and not die instantly.

The movie was in many ways a parody of the book. The book was somewhat controversial in many circles, being interpreted as pushing a militaristic and sometimes even almost fascist social theory by some, though I'm not sure I'd agree with that, however the movie sort of assumes that the book does this and lampoons that concept.
The movie and book only overlap in the most tenuous of ways. There's the "you must serve to vote" thing, there's the names of most of the characters, a "roughnecks" and "mobile infantry", there's a love interest who's a starship pilot and whatnot, but aside from that it's very different. The main character is Filipino in the book, there's actually third alien race they refer to as the "Skinnies", the Mobile Infantry are drop-pod delivered power armored badasses, and the outlook in general is rather different.

I don't recall much on the ST Navy, IIRC the scale in general was much smaller, however ST is much more "hard" sci-fi in general, 40k ships and space warfare is really "Age of Sail....in spaaaaaace!", with things like slave gangs churning great gears to bring gun turrets to bear, they're basically dependent on manual human labor to an absurd degree, in many ways often being described in terms almost less mechanized than WW1 era battleships, and tactics both in books and in BFG that really is "napolonic 2D age of sail" naval warfare than anything that would actually look like a space battle.
But, even that aside, I just honestly don't recall much about the actual fleet makeups, sizes, capabilities, etc from ST to really have enough information to make a determination on that, I don't remember if they even talk about it that much given how focused it was on the Mobile Infantry.

Book fleet < Imperial fleet ( just the seer volume of the imperium wins this )
Total book forces are not nearly as numerous as the total 40k forces so 40k would probally win.

We must all join the Kroot-startes... |

I am always quite amazed that so many people do not know (even after they have seen the movie), that this movie was meant to be a parody on modern imperialism.
I enjoyed it on both levels. Action and damn funny...
The new/current Cadians came out a year after this movie and are basically the same.
In regard to 40k Empire against bugs: 40k is a lot more deadline then anything in that movie.
