Hi Guys,

So after a long absence for the 40k universe I have come back to recollect my first ever army; the crimson fists.

This will be more of a thrifty, studenty, modelling blog rather than a competative list build so will most likely consist of whatever is cheap and/or shiny. Trying to give it a Rynn's world feel so want to try my hand at more of an elite, battle worn force.

To start up a reasonable bitz box again I grabbed myself some of the "new" tac marines and "new" sternguard to hopefully throw together some honour guard and sternguard. As I have already owned the Kantor model from GW I thought it would be a little more exciting (and cheaper) to throw one together myself.

So here goes, happy reading

" border="0" />

First few sterguard, didnt quite get the new arm/bolter/hand cambo so the guy at the back bless him came out a tad wonkey. Need to get my hands on a pin vice again to drill those barrels out.

" border="0" />

Not quite dorns arrow but close enough for me. Again, still needs some clean up and maybe a bit of gs fun if I can find any lying about.

" border="0" />

Found a few snap fits so thought I would test out how my painting has diminished over the years and also experiment with battle damage. I was quite happy but think the chips might be a tad large for marines.

Got a few paints on order and will get the rest build up soon enough.

Let me know what you guys think,
Thanks

Nice start, I think the damage looks ok, but maybe a tiny bit out of scale. Certainly not ridiculous looking though, I think you should finish the test model and then see how it looks. I will be following this blog with interest.

I reckon I will paint the chips a bit smaller next time round.

Paints arrived today to should be round to finishing the test model soon.

Put together a few honor guard with some GK bits.

Happy with how these guys looks. I think the sternguard legs look much more at home here.

Nice looking guys you have there. I did the same thing for my honor guard. Mostly sternguard bits, with a few things (mostly CC weapons) grabbed from other spots.

I like your idea of building via a collection of bits. I'll be following along to see how it progresses!

Yes I was amazed at the stuff you get in that box, I suppose you pay for it though!

Was thinking the red might be a bit bright but turned out looked quite nice. Still need to grasp eyes though...

Those Crimson Fists are gorgeous. Now I want to go start them too, as if I didn't have enough projects I wanted to do....

Have you thought about putting a glaze over your power weapons? Right now (at least in the zoomed close up pic, arms length might be better) it has a lot of visible brushwork.

Not that I do any real detail on mine, just a thought. Guys are coming together nicely.

Looking good, especially the modelling! Some fantastic poses there!

For weathering, look up a technique called 'sponge weathering', it is brilliant for Power Armour and super simple! (basically just dabbing on paint in the chip colour with a sponge)

Cheers, I think most of my painting looks pretty grim up close! Might try and improve the power weapons at some point but pretty happy as a first attempt as it all looks good from table height.

Thank you! I base them in gretchin green (deathworld forest now I think), wash the whole model with scorched brown (Rhinox hide?) then highlight with snot green (warpstone glow). Most of my painting is just base, wash and highlight with something lighter.

Thanks, might be tempted to go with this for vehicles or something larger later on, tempted by a flyer or landspeeder soon.

Just got my hands on a dark vengeance tac squad of ebay, hopefully going to model one to fill the ranks of the sternguard up to 10. Also got some 30mm bases for these that should not look to dissimilar to the 32's (not paying gw prices for bases just yet!).

Cheers,

Based in kantor blue, washed with scorched brown then highlighted with ultramarine blue. I think this is the standard gw way just with a different wash. Battle damage is just tin bitz highlighted with boltgun metal. I did experiment with a two stage highlight but in the end I think the battle chips give enough depth and detail to the armour.

Used the plasma cannon dude to make up the last sternguard and mounted him on a spare 32mm base. Rest of the dark vengeance guys will be on these 30mm bases I picked up for cheap that don't look too bad. Taking the dark angels symbol off may take a bit of work and lots more clean up to do but all in all I think these guys look pretty decent!

I am sure everyone loves seeing tactical marines, so here are some of the DV guys painted up. Experimented trying to batch these guys all at once and it still took me the best part of four hours

Tried to convert the DV sarg into a chaplain, happy with how his crozius came out but I think the jury is out on my green stuff skills.

Tacs look good! The Chaplain should be fine with some paint, I find a lot of GS work doesn't look 'right' until it's painted.

Hi Guys,

So its been a while due to uni deadlines and a fair few time commitments but I am back home for Christmas now and have got a fair bit done as well as playing some games at long last.

Got my tac squad fully painted and a few more sternguard. Also been focused on a kill team campaign me and a mate are running so been getting together some of the DV chaos as well as some objectives and terrain.

Once again, apologies for the poor photos. Will get some proper shot eventually!

Next up will be finishing off the honour guard and sternguard as well as converting the DV terminators.

Cheers, Peanut
