This year I was really looking forward to 3 games: Elder Scrolls Online, Halo 5 Guardians, and Star Wars Battlefront. I have been incredibly disappointed with all 3 of these games, and it's made me think about how little I've enjoyed since the new consoles came out. I remember Destiny in particular really left a bad taste in my mouth, Bungie really dropped the ball with that game and promised way more than what was in the final product. The only games I've really loved so far have been Dragon Age, which sucked me in and wouldn't let me go until I was finished, and Battlefield 4, in which I've logged about 500 hours of game time.
How about you guys? Have you been disappointed or pleasantly surprised by this generation so far? Or maybe everything has been about what you expected. Share your thoughts.

I didn't even bother to buy a console.
There has been nothing that inspired me to get one, no "killer app" that made me want to part with my cash.
Closest I came was when fallout 4 was announced, but I needed to replace my PC anyway, so I've been gaming in that instead.

To be honest I've been pretty blown away by the current generation. I must admit I only own a handful of Xbone games, but each has been so far ahead of what has gone before that it. Graphics in particular are just so much better (Arkham Origins was good, Arkham Knight is just beautiful. Same goes for Halo 2 Anniversary, those are the most amazing visual effects in a game I've ever seen, the cutscenes are almost of movie quality!), and the games themselves are so much bigger, both in the actual size and what you can do in that. The Batmobile/free roaming across all of Gothham in AK, taking on the whole of Sauron's legions in Shadow of Mordor (not to mention the Nemesis system that was a tad underused but exceptional as a concept). The Definitive Edition of the last Tomb Raider also looks just stunning, as does Battlefront.
There are only 2 real issues I have with the current gen, neither are about the games themselves really.
- The price. Just a few years ago, £30 was about the standard for a game on launch, now it's regularly £50+, which is pretty crazy. Yes, as mentioned, there's a lot more to them, but I still feel the markup is less about that and more about constantly pushing the limits of what people will pay for games.
- The fact you have to spend hours installing a game when you get it. It feels like a massive step back from the days of 'get game, put game in console, update if necessary, play game', and I'm not really sure why it's needed.
But on the whole, I certainly don't regret getting the Xbone, or any of the games I have for it. But then, I still go back and play original Xbox games from 2004/05 (Battlefront 2 and Republic Commando for the win!), so I hardly have the highest standards; if a game is fun, I'll play it.

Massively dissapointed.
Pre-ordered Dark Souls II for PC. Bad port. Community fixes made it playable right from the start. Great game. But what pisses me off, is FROM SOFTWARE re-releasing the game at full price with slightly better graphic (next Gen port)(new enemy placement was a free update for everyone). And mutiplayer of this "new" version was not compatible with the multiplayer of the old version.
Pre-ordered Civ: Beyond Earth. It just made wish I would be playing Civ:V instead. So I did. BE still has only 6 hours logged.
Pre-ordered Arkham Knight for PC. PC Port sucked. Played it halfway through their patching process, when it was playable for me. Was not blown away, I even like Arkham Origins more. They tried to add too much. Most side quests were too repetetive.
Didn't bother to pre-oder anything after that.
Waited for Fallout 4 and looks like it's a step down from 3 and NV. Will get this at a sale and not full price.
No interest in SW: Battlefront, I don't need a game without content.

Honestly, where did this idea come from? As far as I remember, new games were always 60€ (or 12.000 "escudos" in our old coin) . I remember that price for the new Sega Saturn games. In the USA seems like many games were $60 or more: http://imgur.com/gallery/LmzWM . $69.99 for a new SNES games. The only big price jump I have seen was some PC games going from the standard 50€ to 60€, and there weren't that many so far.
http://imgur.com/gallery/LmzWM
Well, the only thing that made me consider buy a PS4 was Bloodborne. Thankfully a favorite "Let's Play"-er of mine did a complete run and I was satisfied. Nothing other than that made me consider a console.
About gaming, I haven't been gaming that much this whole year, until last month. Valkyria Chronicles rekindled my love for gaming, and one week after I finished it with all achievements (Yes, I was a true achievement whore back then), Fallout 4 was released.
And I haven't been this addicted to a game in a LOOOOOOOOONG time. Fallout 4 is just an amazing game.

Well it's the fault of the consoles. They both fired their salvoes far too early and now both companies are stuck with sub-par hardware that can't manage what computers were doing a few years ago.
As a result the games suffer as the developers have to gimp them to run on the lacklustre hardware. And then PC gamers suffer because the games get ported in really gakky conditions (see: just about every major game release on PC this year bar Witcher 3).

I bought my PS4 mainly to play Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance. Because I'm a big fan of NISA's tactical RPGs. Too much Real Time crap in JRPG, nowadays.
I must say that the others games out until now don't feel that "next gen" to me (most could in fact be played on a PS3 or even less, for these so called "remastered versions" or compilations). I believe it's still a bit too soon to have games fully using all the capacities of these consoles. Sure, will never beat PC, but price will never be the same as well.
Still annoyed by the "forced" online stuff. Dammit, I don't want to connect myself when I'm playing a solo game or watching a dvd, leave me alone PS4!
Oh well. At least, I can play Disgaea 5. And certainly the next one in a few years.

Experience. When I got my original Xbox in about 2004, games were about £25. With the early 360 titles, around £30, creeping up to £40 for the later ones (at which point I already stopped buying new games for the most part). Then comes the Xbone, and games are £50 or so on release, which is frankly ridiculous.

Christ, UK sounded like a gaming paradise. 30£ for a 360 game? Each new game was 70€ here.
Actually, I recall a former boss telling me he loved to go to England because, among other things, he'd buy lots of gaming stuff at one airport because it was so cheap compared to Portugal.

Gaming has been awesome for me, not that I have a huge amount of time for it. Dark Souls, DS II, Witcher 3, etc have all been absolutely amazing, and there are a bunch of games I haven't had the time to play. No complaints here.

Yeah, in the US, game prices haven't changed much. The original xbox games were $50 at launch, now modern games are $60. Used games have always varied on popularity, and there have always been expensive special editions.

Agreed, the only reason I have ever tried a Ps4 was that I got it from a person whom owned me a debt, and payed with his unused Ps4. I have only Bloodborn and a couple other ones. Will not be buying any more either as any game on Ps4 that I can play on my pc looks ten times better on said computer.

Eh, I don't care about the looks THAT much. I'd actually have more console games if it weren't for each one being so expensive. Just like I'd have more 3DS games if I could somehow hook it up to my tv or computer monitor without having someone cut holes in the portable.

Yeah, my PS4 disagrees. Between games like Shovel Knight, Bloodborne, Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Evolve, and once I get Fallout 4, there's been plenty of games that are a fething blast to play.

With the exception of Bloodborne, neither of those games represent the current gen.
In general, I agree. We also bought a PS4 just for Bloodborne and don't own any other game. There just isn't any interesting console exclusive for any console unless you like Halo. It's the natural fate of consoles, though, as the difference between a console's price and the price of a real PC gets smaller and the only advantage a console has is getting even thinner. Keeping in mind that this isn't a real argument anyway, unless you only play video games on your PC.

Disappointed with the console downloading, but since I learned how to do a fast download, it takes 15 minutes (disconnect from the Internet, goes fast).
Graphics are amazing.
Price is okay, but hey, we'd all love things cheaper.
Game list: I've bought MKX, Battlefront and Halo: MCC, plus the rare replay. Waiting on Battleborn and R6: Siege.
The game list doesn't feel as strong as last gen. PS3 and 360 were beasts in the game list.

No, but mainly just because of Witcher 3.
The level of narrative, facial animation/general expression and the environment is something that has actually blown me away. Only a few other games have had that affect on me; The first time I played Revenge of Shinobi on the Sega Genesis, then Mario 64, and then finally the first Mass Effect (which was similar I think in terms of what it tried to achieve).
As a fervent reader a novel will always be my great escape from reality. But, the Witcher comes damned close, it's really a novel in video game form. It's a thing of beauty. In the sense that a game of that enormous scope wouldn't have been possible without the massive development companies, funding and level of technology that this generation has brought, no I'm definitely not disappointed!

I remember gamecube/PS2 games being $49.99 in the States. Last- gen games were $59.99 on average, and console games today average around $69.99. So, that's about a 50% price increase from the Gamecube days. - - - - - RE this gen: I've been pretty underwhelmed, too. Halo 5, Battlefront 3 and StarCraft LotV have all ended up being pretty disappointing; in general I feel like the jump from last- gen to this one wasn't nearly as big in technological advancement as the previous jump was. There was a massive leap in graphics quality and hardware capabilities from the N64/PS1 to PS2/Gamecube/Xbox, and then the jump from that gen to the PS3/360/Wii heralded the online gaming revolution (even though PC's had been doing it for a decade). By comparison, the graphics bump between last- gen and this one is pretty tame in comparison to prior advances, online capabilities are more or less the same, etc. This gen has mostly just been a refinement of features that have already existed rather than actual innovation. I invested in a gaming PC in July, and for now there's pretty much nothing that a console can offer me.

So far, there hasn't been any console-exclusive games in this generation that has made me go out and buy the console to play it. Most anything that's come out in the last few years that has interested me has had PC versions, and that is my preferred platform.
The last console-exclusive game I bought was "The Last of Us" for the PS3. Was definitely *not* disappointed! I still play that game now and then, because it's my favorite zombie-apocalypse survival-story games. That game just... well, it's like the developers plumbed the depths of my psyche and said "we are going to make a game that checks every box in that guy's brain".
EDIT: The only thing that would make TLOU better is if Nathan Explosion had a voice-over of "Brütal!" whenever I smash some fether's head with a brick or ram their neck onto broken glass or something.

I'm greatly enjoying my PS4 at the moment. My computer was doing decently well with video games and then Witcher 3 came out and basically plays like Geralt is running through pudding...
Bloodborne, Destiny, and Phantom Pain (while not all exclusive to the PS4 have been fantastic for my money. And I generally don't care about mods in my Fallout/Elder Scrolls games, so playing FO4 has been fine too...
I mostly wish for more decent JRPGs on the PS4, but that'll come as more Japanese developers switch over.

I've been pretty disappointed with them recently. Maybe this holiday's releases will change my mind, I'll find out after the holidays, but so far I only play Fallout 4 on my Xbone. Everything else is just... dull. Titanfall was great, and I go back every so often, but there hasn't been enough big things that WEREN'T on the 360. It still feels like the Xbone is limping along with half-assed games dumbed down so the old console can join in the fun too.
