I was just wonder what everyones oppnion is on this cause I was scolded by a neighbor for having christmass stuff up on nivember 10. Saying if is rude to hang holiday stuff up on rememberance day.

My family has always done this and always will because my grandfather was on the front lines from the time he was 16 til a year after the war ended. Came home had kids grandkids and so on, and always said when asked about it was .

I gave up the best part of my youth to keep this country free so we can celebrate christmass and be free. So if I want to hang up christmass stuff go away. And most of the guys I talked to who he went to war with say the same type of things.

Then i am told by a man who was never in the army that I am not allowed it is disrespectful. If my gampy wanted to hang them up I will come hell or high water and the only people who seem to complain are people with no millitary in the family. So how do you all feel about this?

Do what you like, it's a free country.
Personally I'd say that that's just too early for Christmas decorations anyway.
1st of December seems right to me.

"Traditionally", they are only supposed to go up "X"days before xmas and to come down "Y" days after. Blah Blah, advent, 12 fays of blah blah or something.

It's not uncommon for us to start putting them up in OCTOBER and for them to come down in MARCH. Complete with the unseasonal "icicles" hanging off the eaves (which look quite ridiculous given the usual 38*c+ temperatures we often get that time of year (and also, "white christmas?? I don''t think it snowed in Bethlehem either ...

We've never been sticklers for that tradition in my family (given the relative LACK of religious instruction, I'm actually lucky I know when it is ). I know nothing of advent or lent or any of those other holdovers from pre-history.

The rule in our house is after Thanksgiving they can go up. I enjoy Thanksgiving and hate the idea of Christmas encroaching upon it (like the idiots pushing the retail aspect want us to do).

but since you guys don't have a Turkey Day I'm at a loss I guess. If your Gramps thought that way it sounds like a damn good reason to do it like that to me though. tell your neighbor I said "feth OFF!".

His neighbor might have noticed the decorations on 11/10 but scolded him for it today.

Screw 'em. We're freaking Canadians mate! I don't know about you, but while I love winter in all it's arse-freezing glory, the very last thing I'd ever want to do is put up Xmas décor in the middle of gale force winds, 4 degrees and rain, heavy wet snow, or whatever crappy weather Nov/early Dec typically throws at us.

Lately it's been more like September weather, so why the heck not take full advantage of it and get your stuff up? If it's a family tradition - go for it!
Plenty of people around my neighbourhood have done the same, some even started putting up their Xmas stuff the same weekend they took down the Halloween stuff back on the first weekend of the month!

Personally, I think it's fine to decorate early, just don't light everything up like two months early please, unless you live on a main school route and that way can torture all the little savages for an extra month!

And thank-you OP for your service!

The twelve days of Christmas start on Christmas Day, and run until January 5th. The days before that are, as the calendars suggest, Advent.

In our house, the decorations went up on Christmas eve, or perhaps the 23rd. Any earlier than that and the tree would drop needles too quickly.

We had christmas decorations up in store before halloween then they sort of took the back seat for halloween before going straight back to christmas... since like the end of september I think.

We had a real tree one year... Unfortunately it was also the same year we had a new kitten, so we ended up with a 5 month old mini porcupine for 3 weeks, and what appeared to be an occasionally demonically possessed xmas tree that would stare back at you.

Do want you want.

I took out my Christmas stuff last year, realized I had this sweet hand towel for the kitchen. It's thick, a little larger than average and absorbent. Perfect for kitchen use. I used it all year, so technically I've had a Christmas decoration out all year. Sue me.

The only issue I have with Christmas stuff is when I turn on the radio and there's Christmas music playing in early November. I think that should be mandated for December only.

Well, the old wives say that they go up on Christmas Eve and go down by December 5th.

Neighbor sounds like a jerk.

Solution: Leave them up year round. Then he can't complain, right?

Ugh, now that's criminal. It gets obnoxious enough being in stores after about the second time you hear it anyway. For some strange reason, I have a hard time getting in the consumer spirit when I hear random country singer twanging out yet another Christmas themed ballad, no matter how heartfelt they thought it must have been. Keeps me from going out if I can avoid it all December.

I prefer Christmas stuff be left until after Thanksgiving at the very least. Anything earlier smacks of crass commercialization.

Honestly, in Canada if your Christmas Lights aren't up before Halloween you run the risk of having to put them up under a meter of snow.

December 1st I put on a santa hat when I go out and switch my music playlist to holiday tunes. January 1st I go back to normal.

Decorations usually go up sometime mid-Dec, if/when The Wife gets around to it. It also varies on if we are going to be home, or traveling down to my folks, which we alternate. They usually stay up until sometime mid-January. Partly because the only time I can get all my friends schedules to line for for our gamer gift exchange is after the holidays, so we like to keep things festive for that.

I personally think early November is pushing it a little early, but at least it’s after halloween. Whatever people want to do is fine.

For inefficient enough lights and thin enough wire, they would act as a defroster that was pleasant to the eye...

Put up whenever you want, I would say Nov 1 is as early as you can reasonably go due to Halloween being a decorating holiday.

But that stuff better come down Jan 5th! You get 12 days, that's why they wrote a damn song!

As long as you are not stupid and try to have a real tree in your house for 12 weeks and have it burn you to death in your sleep, I don't think it is anyone's beeswax!

Somewhere in south-central England.

To me, Nov 10 is very early as in my family we normally put up our tree and so on about the start of December, i.e. Advent. This year we'll probably do it next weekend.

Most shops have their stuff up already. Some of it was done before Remembrance Sunday, and I didn't hear any complaints. Henley Town put their trees up this week after 11th Nov, but they take Remembrance very seriously here and have a big parade and public service.

I don't think the two things are incompatible. Remembrance isn't an official mourning, it is about remembering.

If your family tradition is to put your dekkies up in early Nov, then I should keep up with it. You don't want to go arseing around with the old ways.

The first Christmas tat I saw on sale this year was in late July, which I thought really was too early. I"m also suffering from Smooth Christmas radio.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
