Stalwart Veteran Guard Sergeant

So, as I was puttering about my collection, I noticed my Caestus Assault Ram sitting on it's shelf, and it got me thinking about how I could use it. As a Raven Guard player, most of my stuff has a pretty good delivery system. Then it hit me.
What if I put Assault Centurions in it? It can take ironclad assault launchers, to make sure you keep your initiative AP2, and it is an assault vehicle, meaning you get there and can charge when you get out.
It may be a way to make them semi useful, Thoughts?

Put them in a drop pod and give them meltaguns.
They are more durable than most other drop pod meltagun units and if they arent dealt with immediately, then they will indeed ruin your opponents day.

My friend likes to run his in a pod with a librarian, and equipped with flamers. being twin-linked, he gets to reroll wounds.
Pretty tanky unit to drop in, and with psychic buffs to be had can survive for that turn 2 multicharge into a back armor line or support unit.

They work well with Drop Pods and singular, durable characters, or characters that fix their initial issues.
There's Pedro, who naturally can tank <8 AP2 wounds with 4++/5+++ and benefits from SaP and Split Fire while they get an additional attack, Seth adds Rampage to help with hordes, any Iron Hands character with EW tanks wounds tremendously, Sanguinary Priests give Iron Hands a 4+++, and any Librarian can potentially give 4++ with Divination.
I've even had success with them using Carcharodons CT with Tyberos (who helps fix the horde issue and makes them slightly more killy against infantry they might hate attacking) and a Biker Captain using the Shield Eternal on a Bike traveling alongside their Spartan. It kinda got thrown out the window because you'll fail delivering that against an Eldar player and any decent Necron player.
Shame that's how it went. I like them MUCH more than Assault Terminators.

They're not half bad in pods. If your army doesn't lack gravcannons and you feel you need a more versatile squad (which indeed can sometimes be more valuable than simply more firepower), those guyz can be a potent backfield threat. Less choppy than terminators but tl-meltas and bolters can do some real damage on the entry. And a pod is way better than ds.

Less choppy than Terminators? Striking at I4 S10 AP2 is potentially choppier, considering the damage their guns will do in the first place. Automatically Appended Next Post: Another thing to note is they don't take up a Heavy Support slot like the Devastator variant. So it isn't like they're competing or anything.

Well, depends on the targets, really. But yep, in some situations it's more valuable than i1 s8 - even with so much more attacks. I'm depictioning them wrestling with backfield stuff, so more attacks are generally more valuable there. Cause you have fewer chances to wiff.

I wouldn't say that you really need more attacks because they can attack at range. That's the REAL beauty of Assault Centurions compared to other assault units: they don't actually have to charge to do something each turn.

Well, they have one base, one for two weapons, and one on the charge. Pedro will give them another one if you go with him.
A chaplain, foot smashfether, librarian are all decent choices to ride with them. Flamers or meltas depending on your army, and bolters if you don't feel you need the frag and defensive grenades.
Could always go with a squad of six in a spartan. Go whole hog, and all that. Make sure to give the Spartan Ceramite... And you still have room for characters.

Always Melta Guns. You're NEVER going to be in Template range with them unless your opponent is brain dead.
If you're doing the Spartan, buy the Frag Assault Launchers so that you keep the Hurricane Bolters.

If you are throwing them in a fast attack pod, your opponent doesn't really have much of a choice if the flamers will be in range.
But generally, yes, meltas are superior.

Seems decent. Never used a Caestus though, so I can't attest to it's effectiveness.

Taking allied Dark Angels and putting the Assault Cents in a pod with Azrael would be an interesting combination. They would get his 4++.

A Librarian could potentially do the same thing and be more useful than Azrael actually is.
Granted it's probably the best choice for him.

assault units are worthless in this current edition unless you can rack up some silly good saves on them and a reliable way getting them from their starting position, into cc and then from there into another cc and another untl the end of the game, and that just isnt possible for any unit that isnt on a bike/jetbike right now too many cheap guns or too many units with silly shooting mechanics.

Additionally, Azrael has a lot more combat potential than a Librarian, twice the wounds, more attacks, etc.

A Librarian can inflict Instant Death. Azrael hardly has more combat potential. 6 S6 AP3 attacks on the charge is nothing to 4 S5 AP2 attacks that inflict instant death.
Like I said, they're naturally the squad that gains the most from his abilities, but why bother allying Azrael at that point? You'd have to take a separate Dark Angels HQ, and an Interrogator would likely be the choice anyway.

That *MAY* inflict instant death. You have to get force off, and you are fishing for 4++ for the squad, so both aren't likely to happen. Libby is good, Azrael is an order of magnitude better. Guaranteed 4++ with superior stats, wounds, and damage output (unless you don't give the squad invulnerability (IF you roll it) and try for force instead...)
