That's pretty epic!
If I didn't despise chaos then I might have put him on my Christmas list.
The new knights aren't too shabby either. I might buy them for Bretonnian conversions.
Also, as a friend of mine enlightened me on his fluff, the beast ate a small fragment of each chaos god (sans-horned rat) to turn into that beast. Slaanesh is captured so couldn't give him a bite, thus his absense in the creature's make-up.

Yeah, today's White Dwarf insider on GW's website explains the 3 heads and skulls protruding from the skin. The 3 heads represent the Chaos champions that Archaon slew and who were eaten by Dorghar. And the skulls just represent more of Dorghar's victims, trapped inside of him.
I'm not sure if I'll ever buy it because I don't know if I'd have the talent to paint it, but I'm really happy a model like this exists. I think it looks incredible and I can't wait to see what other painters (more skilled than I) do with it!

Aren't the skulls there, just because otherwise there would be a ton of flat surface on the model and not because of some odd fluff?

Haha you're probably right! I think he looks better with the skulls; they break up the flesh of the model with more detail.
Also, since I'm working on the Khorgorath now, I can say all those little skulls popping out of the flesh are a lot of fun to paint too!

Probably, doesn't make it good. Those flat surfaces should be scales or flesh, not flat surfaces.

It's cartoonish warcraftish and absurdly busy. Awful model.
And I enjoy a centerpiece model. Hellpit abomination or terrorgheist/ zombie dragon, love from first sight. But it's a different style now, darksiders of heroes of might and warcraft. What a shame

Maybe he loved WHFB and wants to discuss the game that took its place.
Maybe he considers there to be a problem with a product and wants to express that, considering Dakka to be the best place for that.
Maybe he is so bored he literally has nothing better to do.
Whatever the reason Dakka is better for it having differing opinions and discussing the pros and cons of something. The alternative is a hivemind that all agrees about everything and makes a terrible forum with no reason to visit it.

I don't post often anymore. I check rumors and the subforum to see what's going on, there might always be a new model that I like or another hilarious GW blunder to laugh at, not to mention that I want to know about former whfb models being discontinued. You can thank GW for me here because it's their ridiculous secrecy that is partialy to blame for my presence here.
There is a possibility that I would come here anyway though. I mean, a company so big and arogant, owning such a brand, with such manpower and a half arsed lazy and miscalculated product that provides a failure after failure after failure? It's too much fun tbh. Look at the quote in my sig, how can one look away?
Then, when it comes to Archaon, well the OP asked for opinion. I don't blame you for assuming that I hate everything AoS by default but it's not true, I come to models with open mind especially that I check if the model has any use for me. I hated half the End Times stuff already for warcraftish videogamy style and AoS just seems to go further with it, not my fault that I hate said style.
Don't facepalm too much man, it's bad for your brain. When you facepalm you stop thinking about a given matter assuming that it's just absurd, when for example here you faceplam at a perfectly logical behaviour and your reaction comes across as hysteric and weird.

Woha, this last phrase of yours just disqualified yourself for any civil discussion! (for the record I just used it as a replacement for *rolleyes*, which I need once again).
I will be elegant, ignore it and cut you some slack about freedom of speech and not assuming you hate everything AoS by default. however, i must also point your phrase in bold sounds quite troll-ish. Coming to a subforum to laugh at things other people might like seems rude and unnecessary, even if within the rules of a discussion forum.
I guess we see forum etiquette differently.

Back at constructive posting.
I think the model is magnificient and a showcase of GW current capabilities. The former Archaon model was great but he wasn't suitable as the demi-god of Chaos he is currently. Right now, I can see Sigmar himself thinking twice before going face to face with him (to which I must add I hope for a real Sigmar model, we ended getting the lame Celestant Prime instead).
I think a paint job which integrates the three heads better would ease the model to the eyes of some of the critics.

For me, the two things are separate - it is an amazing showcase of GW's current capabilities, but I absolutely think the old Archaon model was suitable - in fact, imo it was perfect! And it's hard to improve on perfection

I see so many of these big models as.... Well, they are an impressive size but I find nothing else impressive about them.
I think I'd like it more if it was in resin and sculpted by someone with a bit more skill than GWs current team.
Ditch the skulls leaking out of it, get some much more well defined textures over it. Definitely go for a more prominent and menacing rider, Archaon himself should still be the focus. The size is cool, and the pose too, but I don't see a draw here.

Having seen it in person how difficult do you think it would be to sand/green-stuff all the the little skulls poking out of the models "skin"?

You're not sanding them out without ruining detail.
But you can green-stuff them. I wouldn't though, as they'll look really good painted up to look a bit different to the main flesh.

As a fan of the character (the old sculpt was the best model made by GW imho) I bought one off ebay and assembled it this week. Holy cow he is MASSIVE. He dwarfs the bloodthirsters, and even imperial knights!
The paint scheme GW has doesn't do the model justice. It is amazing how much detail and care went into this guy. He is definitely going in my cabinet with my LE infinity stuff and HH character series models.
If you haven't seen the model in person, find someone with it and check it out! As for 40k, Maybe he could be used as a hell-turkey or with the forgeworld demon lords rules?

Perhaps sand was the incorrect term, filing could be a better term. Unfortunately I am just not a fan of the skull-acne, as another used called it, and while I do love the look of the model that is a problem I really want to fix

I know what you meant. Sanding and/or filing is NOT going to work. It's recessed detail not raised detail.
It's only a problem, IMO, if you're thinking of Dorghar as a mortal beast. He's not. He's a daemonic hellbeast who can shapeshift and has devoured mortal and daemon champions alike.

Yup IRL this model is just damn sexy even with skull acne. I would not change a bit of it.
Funny enough today I had day off work and was going trough my old still packed stuff only to find out not one but two Archaon on foot... I wonder how can I use these in AoS. Any ideas?
Also found valten on foot and loads of forgotten Lted editions.

I kinda hate you right now, Navarro! I found the legs to mine but that was all. Lost in that place where those things go...
My understanding is that they've said for models like that where they used to have an "on foot or mounted" option is to just go with the number of Wounds/saves a normal Hero would have and port over their special rules that aren't associated with the mounts.

Yeah two and still in their blisters. I also painted one like a decade ago for a store. You can never have to many Archaons.
I think I will have a small AoS Force, mostly on foot, just for him and like you say homebrew some rules and strip away the mount ones. Sounds like a cool small side project for 2016.
