Subject: GW Tutorials: 25 days of Tutorials 14/12/15: Dark skin tones & Yellow power armour
Matthew wrote: You know what? Emma is annoying. What's that hand thing she's always doing?
Ha, I think Duncan's annoying tbh.
Not very impressed with the yellow or the dark flesh tone video - I guess I was hoping for more =/ I know you can do a lot of different dark flesh tones, but the one they picked (using Dryad) just seemed lifeless.
I think with an additional layer colour, those two would pop pretty nicely. Emma does mention that you could take it further with the IF one and use (I think it was) White Scar. The main purpose of these tutorials is Keep-It-Simple-Stupid.
Good point, I keep forgetting that quite honestly and hoping for more.
Maybe it's just that they are giving her the crappy topics but I've found Emma's tutorials aren't as impressive. A few that Duncan has done I've actually learned a cool new trick (painting on top of Martian Earth, or the lahmia medium+dawnstone for stubble) whereas Emma's are always just 'heres an armour colour scheme...." and some of the schemes don't look particularly good at the end (looking at you, alpha legion).

It really does feel like Emma is getting the gak end of the stick... painting Black Templars... black power armour again??!! Appreciated that it's a different tone, but still.

I feel like this tutorial is kind of pointless, its just highlighting black which is simple enough to do.

I don't see why everyone is so negative about Emma. Yes, she has a bizarre hand motion tic, so what? A chick that knows how to paint miniatures and is enthusiastic about it is pretty cool in my book. It doesn't hurt that she's reasonably attractive (at least to me).
I think the problem is that they stick her with the less-than-spectacular painting tutorials and let Duncan do the really cool stuff. Many on this thread have already said this, but I thought I would chime in as well.
Spoiler:
I wonder if she's single...

Her being a woman is irrelevant. If I want to look at women on the internet I'm not coming to a warhammer painting tutorial. She could be male, female, or anything in between, makes no difference.
I just hope that her tutorials are bland because they give her bad topics, and not that they give her bad topics because her tutorials are bland.

I can see why women have no interest in this community
To be honest, I don't blame them. Remember a few years back when White Dwarf got a re-vamp and one of the editorial posts went to a woman?
Dakka went into meltdown.
Some dakka members, admittedly a small minority, just couldn't cope with a woman in the wargaming industry.
It was a very bizarre episode and reflected badly on the community.
I mention this because I want to spare people the wrath of the Mods...

woman or not - couldnt give a monkeys barring the fact that it's nice to see more women being into hobby and on the frontline. There are, as we all well know, a lot of female artists who who whip my and all of ours painting butt with a brushstroke. I would just like to see them being featured more. folk how have a sudden and (imho) ridiculous reaction to women being in the hobby..well...that's they're problem and I really have, as I'm pretty suremost of here are of the same opinion, no time for their purile nonsense. respect the paint not the gender.....if that makes sense.....does in my head......

Easy, easy! It was meant to be a joke! I should have known I would get flamed for saying anything about Emma being a woman. Although, you have to admit there are FAR more men than women involved in all aspects of this hobby. So that is why I like it when I see a woman involved in it. I'd be thrilled to death if a woman showed up to play in a 40k tournament at my FLGS, but I would not immediately start hitting on her or anything juvenile like that, as that would probably run her off. I like to think I'm not that shallow. Still, the gender discussion is best left for another time, so let's just continue enjoying these tutorials, shall we?

I'll put it this way, there are more women on Dakka than most people know about.
On one hand Dakka is a great equaliser. On the other, it isn't because there's a blanket assumption everyone here has one hand on a paintbrush, so to speak.
Very grateful for the stubble tutorial, back on topic. Been looking for something like that for a while.

Mmm as with most of these tutorials, the checks and dags vid is a good starting point but I was left feeling a little underwhelmed. A couple of optional extra stages surely wouldn't've hurt. As is, I think Emma's end result looks nice and neat but very flat.

Again- keep it simple stupid.. it's the basic concept that they're addressing, not the full shebang.

How 3D do checks and dags realistically get though?

Liking the base tutorial! I don't use the gray texture, but I'm sure I can use similar methods for mine. I currently use Blackfire Earth (which has now been discontinued unfortunately ), Agrax Earthshade for the shading, and Terminatus Stone for the drybrush part. I should probably make use of the little rocks I got with the Badlands basing kit like he did, it does look better than just a flat base.

The marble tutorial is awesome! Think he is a bit too liberal with the strippling of the snow over the rocks and skulls. Almost no point in painting them in the first place.
Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Yeah I thought that too, but I suppose it is more realistic, and if you didn't basecoat them properly it would probably show (and there would be bugger all you could do about it).
I really wish no-one had pointed out Emma's hand movement, I can't see anything else now :/

That's a fantastic one. Very useful.
I think it's probably nerves, I'm pretty sure I've met the lass at the larger open days when they have all the staff they can grab on the tills, and she was quite a quiet lady. That or they have other very quiet ladies. It's all good, everyone is super polite.
