I always like my assault units to be above min size. They're going to get withered down before getting there and if 3 die before you can charge, the other two really don't matter anymore.

Depends what you're looking for from them. Min squads of 5 can take two special weapons and a combi-weapon on the champion to give you suicide squads of flamer/melta/plasma. Add meltabombs on the champ and drop in next to a tank/TEQ unit (then die in the subsequent turn). A squad of ten has more of a chance in CC. Take lightning claws on the champion, give them a mark of slaanesh and an icon for an I5, fnp squad.

The main advantage raptors have over asm is ability to take melta and plazma. Use it.

Disagree on Plasma. They're too expensive to be toting it and not be Relentless to charge something.

I usually have 5 with 2 meltas. Add on MoN when I have the points spare think I will want them to grab an objective somewhere.
Usually run two squads of these jumping around the table.

Well, i like plazma drop termies and melta raptors. Raptors are versatile cause they have an option to ds or stay on board and still engage turn 2 or 3. Termies are more compact and somewhat more resilient and have power weapons but you'll find you're deepstriking them >90% of the time. The only exception is when you want to get ready to a strong alpha-strike that doesn't have anything left backfield for termies to threaten afterwards and you feel you're gona need every bit to make it through turn 1 and 2.
However, plazma raptors are also an option. Especially when you plan on deepstriking them. Plazma is more reliable than melta simply cause of range. You can fall out of 12" and still get your shots off. Means you can risk less. Plazma raptors are less assault-oriented. But that doesn't mean they can't kick one's butt when needed.

Not really. For the price they'll be wiped off the table too easily. Raptors taking Meltas need to melt those transports AND be able to charge what's inside. Otherwise, you stick with what's going for range. Plague Marines deliver Plasma MUCH better.

A 5 man, 2 melta Raptor squad is a distraction/suicide unit that you use to threaten expensive vehicles, IC/MC's and objective grabbing. For ~120 points (it has been a while since I played my CSM but they are about that much) you get a 12" move, the ability to hide at the top of buildings to avoid charges, the ability to jump behind buildings to avoid everything, and the ability to DS if you want to. Plus two melta shots with 3 ablative models.
If you are charging things that can kill them you are doing something wrong. If you sit them somewhere they can get shot to death you are doing something wrong.

I like my raptors with the MoK and 2 flamers when I run large groups of them. Or I run them as a 2 melta suicide squad.
I don't think I have ever fielded plasma raptors. They are not relentless and raptors are a cc unit.

In my CSM, I run them MoS w/ FnP Icon. 2 meltas, 10 bodies if I can fit them. In my Daemonkin, I'll usually have them in the formation requiring 2 units so I run min sized with 1 melta each.

I usually run raptors no mark with 2 melta and a combi, this is a big threat to tanks and if not dealt with the turn they arrive will be mobile melta to wreck havoc on the back line. Don't take them assuming they are going to live after they dump their first turn out shots, they are a fairly cheap big threat to tanks, if they are shot at thats less fire on the rest of your army, if they arent shot at then your enemy will regret it.

I run them in my Khorne Daemonkin army; 2 min size squads, along with some Warp Talons and a Heldrake in the Khorne's Bloodstorm formation. +1 strength HoW attacks are nothing to sneeze at. 1 squad runs with 2 meltas, the other with a flamer and a plasma pistol (don't laugh, I did it at the time because I thought it looked cool, so now I just go with it). Both squads have a power sword on the champ. Power swords come in handy when facing MEQ or less, and you really should not charge TEQ with Raptors except in dire need.

Yeah, I realize that now...I guess at the time I put them together I just thought "That sword looks badass, lets go with it!" I've done that with several models in my collection, but it would not be too easy to undo at this point, especially getting the shoulder pads off the arms. I could probably get the Raptor's pads off to change out the arms as they really didn't fit right anyway, but on my DA command squad...fuhgedaboudit.

In general, when I do use Raptors, I usually prefer them in an infantry-attack role. I'll usually equip the squad with two flamers, and either a Powerfist or Lightning Claws on the Champion (PF's more of late due to the absurd price bump LC's got), and have them run around and either mop up weakened enemy units or attempt to engage enemy support units, or just be prepared for an opponent getting something stranded somewhere. I usually run them 8-10 strong, anything less and they'll be crippled before they can do anything.
Their success hasn't been terribly inspiring for me, but I think that's more a reflection of the state of the metagame and the edition as a whole than anything else. I'm not a huge fan of equipping them with meltaguns just because they can kill most vehicles with Krak grenades if they need to and you'll usually want their speed for engaging something else, I don't think there's any reason to ever use Plasma guns however.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |
