In an Unbound army, sure!

The Assigned Air Caste Asset isn't a Formation, so is not an option outside of the Hunter Contingent thingy.

In the Space Marine Codex, all choices for the Gladius are Formations in their own right (they have a Datasheet to themselves in the Codex), whilst other Codexes have options for their "Decurion" equivalents which are not stand-alone Formations (Necron Deathmarks, Eldar Rangers and Tau flyers etc.).

Not quite all. I believe the Strike Force Command is one such Choice that is not a Formation.

But it's pretty easy to identify the Formations, they are at the back of the codex after the Lords of War option(s) and you can just base it off of that.

To round out the answers, the Assigned Air Caste Asset does not have its own formation datasheet, so it's effectively meaningless outside of a Tau Hunter Contingent and could only be taken as an Unbound army.

If it did have a formation datasheet however you would then have two formations, so you army would be Battle-forged.

Air caste, drones, outcasts(eldar, rangers), deathmarks, flayed ones, and most of the command sections are all simply units you can take in the army selection detatchments(which is what I am now calling the decurion-style detachments).

None of those are formations; but they are allowable sections(most are auxiliaries).

In short: those selections are no different that the unit entries in a CAD. If you want to add them to an army they must be within their specific army selection detachment, otherwise you are just adding units and your army is unbound.

If you have the points and want to be rude to your opponent consider the Crimson Hunter Formation from Eldar Craftworlds.

It is essentially 3 crimson hunters with some fancy auto cover save rules. ~450pts or ~500pts i think

Take a look at my painting blog! Always looking to improve, please feel free to comment with thoughts and advice!

Ok thanks for all the answers.

So if I got this right, the air caste asset is only an option in a Hunter Contingent, but if it would be an real formation this will still count as battleforge?

Yes, if it were a proper formation, with a datasheet, then you would only have an army of detachments (formations are a type of detachment) and that is, by definition, battleforged.

For example: strikeforce ulta and an optimized stealth would be battle-forged.
