Subject: Wraiths and the Wraithflight Special rule while in terrain
|
 |
Wicked Canoptek Wraith
|
Hi guys and gals,
I have an issue with playing my wraiths at the minute in my Necron army as I am having difficulty fully understanding the way Canoptek Wraiths move through cover using there wraith flight special rule.
Long story short is I need to know if Wraiths can move through and up terrain like say a tau commander can where they just measure from the base and move 12" from there on any surface like on top of a ruin (example is there's a ruin that's 10" away but I move the full 12" from ground level and land precisely on the ruins top level)?
Or is it like any normal unit that must move to the ruin then move 3" for each level upwards?
Also when assaulting through terrain would Canoptek Wraiths be penalised for initiative since the wording of the wraith flight rule states that they treat all terrain as open ground?
If people could help me make sense of this then I think it would help me play a better game and not seem a cheater as some people have stated I am.
Thanks Darkhorse

If they do not have the Jump, Jet Pack, Skimmer, or Flyer rule I would say you need to count all vertical distance as moving.

Meaning you don't have to roll for moving through difficult terrain.

I'm unsure and unmoved at the minute it seems very certain it means I can just hop from building to building since fluff wise the wraiths can both hover and phase through things.
And it would just fit that they ignore penalties and hindrances.

That's fair, but I don't see vertical distance as a hindrance, just more open ground to cover.

Think it will need clarification but ill go as what you say and move as though each level is 3" each and when assaulting I will take no penalties as I have talked with my friends and brother and they believe that to be the best interpretation.

Usually units that are not hindered by terrain(bikes, beast and such) still are affected by the initiative malus, its in the description of the rule in the BRB, units that are designed to ignore this have this stated in their rule, like Harlequin grav-belts or Eldars Banshees iirc.
Now there was a huge and messy thread atthe moment of the Cron release about this.
it boiled down to some discussion about what is or not a Citadel terrain ,since you are supposed to play with those, and only Citadel terrains have rules in the BrB, and that self made terrains should count as the appropriate Citadel terrain and such.
Now Wraithflight counts terrains as open, but there is no rules for open terrain or something like that, my memory fussy about this...
Now Wraiths are Jump infantry, so they can hop on the second or third floor of a ruin/building if they can.

They are Beasts now, not Jump.

Slayer they are beasts now they used to be jump infantry but my point is beasts already ignore terrain so what does wraith flight give them extra.
That's why I thought they could move like a jetpack infantry.
Also yes the exact wording on wraith flight is "When moving, Canoptek wraiths can move over all other malodels and terrain as if they were open ground. However, they cannot end their move on top of other models and can only end their move on top of impassible terrain if it is possible to actually place the models on top of it"
So first point it says I can go "over terrain" which means I should be able to go from the ground and do a 12" move to the top floor like a jetpack can. To further concrete this impassible terrain is usually a building you cant access that's about 9 tall yet I can land right on it as Lon as I can "actually place models on top of it".
And slayer I use only Citadel terrain I have about 8 ruins 4 craters and the honoured imperium set all built.
But I had a game some time ago and my opponent was annoyed as he said i cheated as there were 2 ruins about 10" apart and I zipped my wraiths from one to the other since I interpreted their rule as I thought I had.
And since Games workshop has not done a FAQ since January and since there faq and customer service departments won't help I am stuck on this matter. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oooh almost forgot when it comes to the assaulting part I also believe that charging is an out of sequence movement and since I treat all terrain as open ground I can only say what terrain? There is no terrain hindering my wraiths.

WRAITHFLIGHT
SKYBORNE (JUMP)
SKYBORNE (JETPACK)
MOVING SKIMMERS
Wraithflight looks to be functionally identical to Skyborne in the sense of allowing Wraiths to ignore vertical distance while moving over models and terrain.

I wouldn't say it's functionally identical to Skyborn for Jet and Jump, but definitely the same wording as Skimmers.
Whatever the consensus is about measurement, Wraiths would not be slowed because they would not be charging through terrain but through open ground.
