So a good 3-4 years ago a friend of mine and I decided to get into 40k needless to say we were a bit overwhelmed at the time. We happened to get a GW here back in October and I went in on black Friday and walked out with the khorne daemonkin bundle. I also have most of an old chaos space marine battleforce. (Missing the tank and I think 2 berserkers.) I was just looking for pointers on if any of the units in the box are still worth using. I'm thinkingo f maybe my friends and I get around 800-1000 points to learn the game with the armies we want instead of the starter set armies. The bundle I got came with a bloodthirster 2 boxes of bloodletters and a box of bloodcrushers. I appreciate any advice as we learn this awesome hobby

Welcome back to 40K!

I play Orks (Waaagh!), so really don't know how to help you with your Khorne Daemonkin stuff, but I hope you have fun!

See you on the forums!

INSANE army lists still available!!!! Now being written in 8th edition format! I have Index Imperium 1, Index Imperium 2, Index Xenos 2, Codex Orks Codex Tyranids, Codex Blood Angels and Codex Space Marines!
PM me for an INSANE (100K+ points) if you desire.

Khorne Daemonkin is probably one of the strongest ways to play CSM at the moment. Unfortunately, it is only for Khorne (obviously) but it will do fairly well in almost all circles. What does your friend want to play?

MiniWarGaming has a series of Youtube videos on how to play 40k that may be of benefit to you.

Sadly everything I've read makes csm and khorne daemonkin feel underwhelming though I'm hoping this isn't the case.

CSM really are underwhelming at the moment, KDK very much not, in fact they are one of the most powerful army lists around.

The down side, it slightly revolves around daemons, pure marines will not shine as much as a mixed force.

Most CSM forces can run under loyalist rules and do fine. But it looses a lot of flavor, so not recommended.
Nurgle forces under "the purge" detachment from varks can also pack a punch, with no mandatory troops and lots of elite/heavy you can pack a lot of heavy hitters (no fast slots though)

What exactly do you have? Many of us don't quite know what the old battleforce had.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Daemonkin as a whole is still underwhelming.

A Daemonkin list spamming Gorepack formations is good, but not quite to the point of being on a level footing as any of the other 7.5 ed codices. It will definitely have fun running over any non-optimised lists from the remaining 7th & 6th ed codices, because Hounds are amazaballs & the bikers can cheaply spam the melta.

Chaos Daemons are the only way to really run a hyper competitive Chaos list of any kind still.

Chaos Space Marines may as well not even exist at this point, unless you really enjoy being shoehorned into a 'One List to Rule them All' style of gaming.

I don't know what you have but I will tryand help. And after playing them almost a year I disagree they are one of the most powerful list around they are a mid pack army. But they are a fun army! And if your playing your friend and other like minded people you will do just fine. I have a lot of competitive people in my play group and they don't do well againts what some of the power lists.

Bloodletters are good cheap scoring units so are cultist although for a few points more the letters fearless helps to hang in there.
The gorepack is your friend max out on hounds and put meltas on the bikes.
Hell drakes are awesome take up to 3 if your playing a strong list. against your friend with no flyers I would not recommend
if you want to keep your friend : ) (this also requires running a cad unless you want to take a large troop tax. which CAD not a bad way to go with a gorepack formation add on)

chaos lorde on juggy is beast HQ choice although I enjoyed a Deamon prince from time to time. A little cheaper than a BT mine drew a little less fire, you can put eternal warrior and feel no pain on him and he is pretty much just as killy as the reg blood thrister.
Also use your Blood tithe points to for the FNP and lesser daemons if you want to summon. (dogs is the best choice but more letters to grab an objective is not bad)Those are the most helpful options.
Against your friends or if your willing to spam a few units you will do Fine. And if thats the army you want to play thats all that matters! I was In the same boat as you not long ago but fell out of love with the army after many games.

Bloodletters are your best troops. Kit them out with icons and instruments and use them as deep strike beacons for your big stuff. I personally never use Bloodcrushers since Flesh Hounds are more efficient for their points imo, but AP3 can be helpful.

The battleforce came with like 15 csm a squad of berserkers 5 possessed and a rhino

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yeah when I originally decided to play csm I basically settled on wanting a kharn the betrayer. By far one of the coolest characters. But sadly khorne daemonkin and csm don't seem to have the draw or appeal csm had a few years ago. Maybe I can convince one of my friends to buy them off me and choose another army lol

So... Right now you should have a thirstier 3 crushers, 8 zerkers, 20 bloodletter, 5 spawn and 15ish marines, right?

That's enough to run the core of the KDK formation that let's you use everything but the crushers, and us rather good.
Then you just need to fix an auxiliary. War engine is the easiest to match, and the gorepack is damn brutal, the brazen onslaught uses crushers, but requires 3 more plus some termites, so you won't save any money compared to gorepack/war engine.

Alternatively you can run a simple CAD. Not quite as efficient at blood tithes, but you can run everything without constraints. MSU spam and forward rushing goes a lot way in KDK, just remember your minimal troop size is 8 (zerkers, letters, CSM are all troops for you)

You might want to make a few (2 to 4) of the letters really fancy and call them heralds, they are great for leading marine groups, or just raking up the tithe.

He would Possessed as well in order to run that formation. And a Rhino because let's be honest, the only way Possessed are going to be even half useful is with a transport.
