Bitter and hardened would be interesting to work with if you write the rebuilding, but hopeful guard are fun guard too, so it depends on what you think should happen to their future. I think it depends on the character. To embrace the suck or not. I'd write mine bitter and battle hardened based on the gak they've seen.

I love the Tanith. That series was quite frankly one of the best (if not the best) 40k series that I ever read. (it's right next to the Ciaphas Cain series for me)

I do like the upbeat idea more of the two, to be honest. It's more true to the Histans, who were joking around after the Knife of Hista fell, and when they were defending the slobs of Novus Regulus. Sure, this is worse than either of those, but they're a strong willed group. Besides, I can't let those traitors get all of the wins, can I? After a few (Ok, a lot) of drinks, and a war against some aliens, the Histans will have raised their morale again, and go on to be the meatshields of a different war.
