How does it work? With regards to the d3 wounds in the D weapon. If it kills one does it go to the next model? Or does it just over kill one model?

It overkills the one model.

The vehicle wording is clearer than the infantry wording because they use the term "D Hit".

Basically on the vehicle table you take a single penetrating hit (so roll ONCE on the vdt) but rather than 1 hp, it takes off D3.

So if you shoot a Leman Russ with 1 HP left the extra hp doesn't spillover. Infantry works the same way. Roll on D table instead of rolling to wound, save if possible as if you'd just taken a S10 wound, instant death if applicable, and if you aren't instant deathed take D3 wounds. If you just had one wound? You're still dead.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I just play it as that single model being allocated D3 wounds. If it ends up being a 3, that single model has to pass all three saves to not be killed, but if it only passes one then the excess wounds are "lost".

Not sure about the exact wording though, I never liked D Weapons to begin with and don't have anything with it other than my shadowsword (which seldom sees use).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Not correct. It's one save and if failed, then d3 wounds applied to that model only, with no spillover if the model has less wounds than that remaining. It basically works like a cannon from what used to be fantasy.

Even if it's in combat, not shooting?

Why would that make a difference?

Very end of the Destroyer rule (page 163 of the rulebook):
Multiple Wounds / Hull Points inflicted by a Destroyer hit do not carry over to other models in the unit (any excess are lost).

I have always played it as the multiple wounds spill over, as the Vindicaires do (or at least I was told by an opponent it does).
So now my Shadowsword is actually worth a damn.

They don't. Your Shadowsword has artificially inflated effectiveness.

Its just D weapons that overkill, other exploding-wound hits still spill over to the unit. D-plates still hit multiple models.

But the hits don't carry over to models not under the template. All the guys under it are hosed, though.

Yep, that is how it works.

Well, I will take note of that, but if I may be frank I like my Shadowsword to feel useful for the points it costs. And if that means that it ends up working like every other random multiple wounds weapon then so be it.

Unless it hits a vehicle that explodes and kills other stuff.

Explosions cause more hits within a radius.
