On one hand, the option for a reduced-price electronic option can really only be a positive.

On the other.... less than half the market is devoted to Apple products. GW needs to join the 21st century and realize the Android market is still larger than Apple's. I assume making their products available on the Android platform is incredibly difficult for their programmers to do for some reason. Yet another disappointment.

Oh well - congrats to iPhone users that find this useful!

Thank goodness I have an Android and not an "Andoir". I'm glad such a credible and "pretty icon person" has warned us of the dangers that plague the Android knock-off market...

On moon miranda.

These "gamer" editions just rub me the wrong way. This is the kind of stuff other places release for free. and GW's charging more for format-restricted digital copies of the 10% of the total content that the rules actually consist of, than they did for entire complete physical copies of codex books just a couple editions ago...

Really? Like..someone thinks this is going to be a winner?

You do realize that *Android* is an operating system, not a specific hardware device, and that there's many dozens of different devices with varying quality scales & price ranges?

Perhaps, in general, you should treat electronics with more care and get decent cases for them and you wouldn't have to replace them so often?

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

10% of the total content for a little better than 50% of the price. Yea, I'm not really seeing reasons to be excited about these. Also, any version of eMedia is worse than print because it is so much easier to flip to the info you need in a book than with some sort of .pdf or whatever.

Just checked my digital iPad codex space marines. 46% of the total page count is rules. Sorry guys. Also, the price of Codices several editions ago is irrelevant. And even if you do take it into account, the total page count of those old codices barely reaches the page count of these rules-only versions... I won't comment on the digital vs physical thing because it's entirely subjective (I much prefer the iPad versions myself)

What is funny is that with Apple you can link a friend or family member's account to your apple account and share all your purchase including GW codexes with them.

"Hold my shoota, I'm goin in"
Armies (7th edition points)
7000+ Points Death Skullz
4000 Points
+ + 3000 Points "The Fiery Heart of the Emperor"
3500 Points "Void Kraken" Space Marines
3000 Points "Bard's Booze Cruise"

How do you defend an anti-piracy system? By eliminating the reasons people have to circumvent the system. Less motivation to bypass the DRM means less availability of unauthorized copies. Apple has this nice line of laptops and desktop computers that those "Codices for iPad" work just fine on, too.

Equally calculated decisions.

I'd happily pay for a Gamer Edition of the whole range of rules (inc. all the codices, new formations, etc.) on a subscription basis. But these do not solve the same problem.

The problem with subscription services is generally you’d have access to only the most recent rules. Which is not without merit, but I like the archival nature of books on the shelf.

I’m also a lot more conservative financially with ongoing payments then I am with one-offs. Even semi-regular one-shot payments like GW rules. Of course, if the price were reasonable, it might be worth it. It would get better if you played more factions, if we are talking about an all-access pass. When I was closely tracking how much I spent on rules with store credit, I ended up dropping about $360 over about a two year period. I’m not happy with it, but It snuck up on me. That’s $15 a month. Which in the grand scheme of things isn’t that bad; I think I pay Netflix that, and feel I get my entertainment dollar out of them.

But I don’t have a whole lot of faith in GW’s ability to price things reasonably, and hold ongoing payments to a higher standard.

Yeah, I was thinking of an all-access pass. Though I, too, have no faith in GW's ability to price things reasonably.

The way I see it, they have so many rules now that unless you own a store / run a tournament, AND are obsessive about GW, you probably don't purchase all the rules any more.

But if you game competitively, you still need to know those rules. Some are going to pirate them, doubtless (not going into detail about that). Many more are just going to check blogs and review sites that just summarise the changes (which is legal, generally, since rules per se can't be copyrighted -- only the particular expression of the rules). GW could reach out to both those markets with a subscription service that just got you all the rules, as and when you needed them. No fluff, no painting guides. You'd almost certainly still want to buy dead tree rules and supps that were relevant to your main army/armies.
