so I recently asked in general discussion if blight grenades have any other function than being just defensive grenades, which then a mod locked the thread because "dakka is not a replacement for a rulebook."
being a little confused, and new to the website, I'd like to know what's ok to ask? Also I couldnt find what i was looking for in the "forum rules" and thought to ask here, not sure if there's another place more appropriate.

You can't ask for things that are simply in the rule book. We aren't legally allowed to post rules from GW (it makes the website liable for a C&D) so your blight grenade question is basically asking what do defensive grenades do which the only way to answer would be to give you the defensive grenade rules (which we can't do)
You can ask for help extrapolating rules. Such as how two rules would interact or for verifying how you interpret a rule is correct.

Well I know what defensive grenades can do, I was wondering if I can use them for something else, like as an assault weapon or something like krak grenades. don't answer that if you can't, I guess.
and alright, that's pretty much what I was looking for, thanks a bunch.

Unless the book states otherwise, why would they be able to do anything aside from be defensive grenades? Granted, I don't have the rulebook, but in general 40k uses a permissive ruleset, meaning that only things specifically said to be permitted are allowed.

Blight grenades are defensive grenades, with no additional rules. Defensive grenades are defined in the rulebook, at the end of the Special Rules section near the back, and have rules for both shooting (as an assault weapon) and being used in close combat.

I'm asking because it says blight grenades "count as both assault and defensive grenades" and that confused me greatly, but I just checked the rule book and now realize that "assault grenades" are their own thing entirely.
Essentially i was getting some terms mixed up, but now I understand how they work.

The problem dtox is that you're asking about something very clear (which apparently some people need to check again...). Page 66 of the CSM codex. It literally can not be more clear than what is written there unless you are having a derp moment, which does happen and those questions get answered too. But you know you don't have the rules and you know you need the rules. We are not your rulebook replacement. If your opponent asked what Blight Grenades do and asked you to show them in the codex, you would be unable to do so because even if you got your answer here, we could be wrong. And I'll let you know right now, some people are wrong. That's just poor gaming etiquette right there. You should never have to say 'trust me, that's what they do' to your opponent.
After you get the rules and read them and try to understand them, everyone will be happy to help you through anything you get confused on, get backwards or just plain forget. AFTER you get the rules. That is likely why the mods locked the thread because you already admitted to working without the tools you need.

Alright, I know im new and all, but you really dont have to tell me that. I havent even begun to paint my models yet, let alone have a complete army to do anything with.
Second, it was a simple misunderstanding. I HAVE the 40k rulebook, just not the chaos codex, and in the 40k rulebook I didnt know "assault grenades" were a thing. now I do, problem solved.

Ok simple rundown of what and how to ask:
You can ask for explanations of meaning in the rules(e.g. "what does and/or mean", "I am not clear on the interaction between X and Y", etc).
You can ask for explanations of function within a statement(e.g. this specific case with blight grenades as both assault and defensive grenades).
You can ask if rules interact in a way that seems odd to you(there may be other rules involved, invoked within 1 or more of the rules interacting)
You cannot ask for rules wholesale.
From what I can gather in this post you had seen that blight grenades are both defensive and assault grenades and were trying to ask how that works or in what ways they can be used. It is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: a model or unit with blight grenades can use them as assault grenades anytime that assault grenades can be used, and can use them as defensive grenades anytime they could use defensive grenades. The rules for assault and defensive grenades can be found in the BRB.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Generally, if your rules question can be answered with a simple yes or no, you should be able to find the answer in the rule books.
The forum is more often used for something like, "Ok... I've read the rules, but I can't figure out how they work" sort of issues. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, if you had asked that question in the rules forum, I don't think anyone would have blinked an eye. We would have so... "Oh, those also act as assault grenades. There should be a section in your rule book telling you what those do."
I don't think you would have gotten an insta-lock.

pretty sure it was from misunderstanding, otherwise I would think the thread could have been moved.
