You can still be competitive with Dark Eldar, Willow Ryder is currently 18th overall in the ITC rankings running strictly Dark Eldar. It's not as easy as with other armies but if you want to push for it, you can.

18th is a pretty big stretch to be fair...

Please explain?
There's also the 24th rank over all player who has played almost exclusively Dark Eldar too, and remember that's 18th and 24th out of 1750+ players.

Look up SkaredCast on youtube.
Dedicated Dark Eldar player (though he currently usually uses a small amount of craftworld units) who takes on some of the toughest lists in the game with largely the Dark Kin and usually comes out on top.

A lot of this is really good advice and extremely helpful. I'm showing one of our local guys who has given up on DE this stuff

Yeah I talked to a guy on reddit that said he'd be willing to show me the ropes with DE. Be cool if it happened. I still have....well...everything to learn about this game really. I do wanna say thanks for all the advice everyone. It's really helped me out more than you think.
Also, to be perfectly frank...it's good to see the community so welcoming. I really do appreciate it.

One thing to be mindful of is what format and level of seriousness people are playing with. For example, certain abilities such as the psychic power of invisibility functions vastly differently under the ITC rules than it does under the NOVA rules.
Additionally people like the MiniWargaming guys are much more casual players so even when they do more serious reports there are still a lot of holes in their list and play. Not to say you can't learn from them, as they are fun to watch, but just be mindful of the source.

DE are competitive on a local FLGS tournament level as long as you don't have a stack of hyper-competitve players. I just won an 18-player FLGS tournament using mono-DE, then the next tournament I took 7th out of 18 (I played the tournament winner and runner up both). And I agree it's much more rewarding to play DE than many other armies. They do need a new codex though, I'm holding out hope for late 2016.

Dark Eldar wont get a codex for 7th again, I don't think. They could possibly get the Mont'ka type of treatment though.

Definitely not a mistake. Check out the most recent battle reports on youtube channel strikingscorpion82 and tabletoptactics. Dark Eldar give Eldar craftworld armies a real good whupping on both channels.
Shows that they can do well with the right list and a little bit of luck.

Consider this,
DE are skillful to play and most opponents honestly freak out when they see Raider Spam and or Venom Spam as most people don't play DE. Resulting in mostly terrible plays against DE players which usually leads to a DE victory either through attrition or VPs through board control.
DE are extremely fun to play from my experience and I regret not buying a full army from my friend who lent me his 11ish thousand point army. They are fun, require thought and skillful positioning and can be extremely satisfying when you make your opponent tilt so hard they make a terrible play you just KNOW cost them the game.
At least, if anything you aren't playing CSM, which by far is the most unsatisfying army to play and rarely ever gets satisfaction unless you fully commit to Slaanesh and enjoy throwing your money away on an utterly useless unfun army with little to no Codex balance nor competitiveness outside of forgeworld.
So, you also have that.

It's terribly outdated and wasn't too strong to begin with. Daemons can be powerful and R&H is pretty strong with certain builds. CSMs has two or three really solid combos but other than that you're really playing with a huge handicap. I still like them but I also play dark souls so

CSM is definitely that bad. Most of their good stuff is from IA, very few options in the Vanilla codex are worth taking, and the Black Legion supplement I'd say is just TERRIBLE.
At most you have MoN Crimson Lords, Juggerlords from the Vanilla, and the Spawn you throw them in. Add two Sorcerers and you still have a weaker unit than kitted out TWC.

Regarding all of the suggestions to switch to Marines because they're easier to play, I think that when choosing an army for a game that's going to end up costing thousands of dollars, you should go with the army you want to play, not the army that'll get you the most wins.

Well that's kinda what I did. I picked DE based on their fluff alone. At the time, I didn't know that they were a really hard group to play. BUT, I DID know that SM was kind of lame and Eldar had blown up. I asked the guy at my shop what the least played army was and he said Dark Eldar. So I bought a fuckload of Dark Eldar.

That is spot on, couldn't have put it better myself. Codices change over time, so what is a poor army one day could be extremely strong in their next book (Dark Angels for example). Before their 6th and 7th edition books, Eldar were struggling a bit. I have a few different armies, but Blood Angels will always be my favourite and I will continue to play them. My regular opponent mainly plays Chaos Space Marines because he loves the army and even though our armies are not the most competitive, we still have great fun in games.
Build up your Dark Eldar force, send them out to battle and have great fun with them Automatically Appended Next Post: IGLannister wrote:Well that's kinda what I did. Dark Eldar have some of the nicest looking models that GW produce. Also the fact that they are the least played means that your opponents might not know all of their tricks and rules and you can catch them off guard with all the bonuses that DE get by the later turns of a game. Another advantage is less competition when bidding on Dark Eldar stuff on eBay

It also depends on how you play Dark Eldar. Venom spam with MSU warriors is good, but old fashioned raider based lists and wych cults are much harder to play.
