So how are the Salamanders this edition? I'm trying to decide on a loyalist chapter to run, I was going to do Carcharodons, but decided against it, and Imperial fists just don't suit me....I like the fluff on the Salamanders, and the primarch is awesome as well.

Asthetically they look great with the green and gold and all the bling from fw...but how do they run? How good are their rules?

Not exactly great until you add in Vulkan, who is by all means necessary to make them function well.

Salamanders are pretty interesting and have a few nice characters from the ba dab rules, if you are going for max competitive thy are not the best, but they can hold sir own quite well and are solid mid tier marines. Framers are framers lol and tend to be greatly underestimated

Why would you decide against Carcharodons?

Carcharodons actually function well in specific scenarios. It is relatively easy to get their Bikers and Scouts to activate Rage, and consequently be very aggressive in deployment and melee rounds.

That said, they need to be brought up to date for 7th. Plus being treated as Desperate Allies hurts a lot. It means you can't combo things very well. Plus their special character has only a 5++ with no EW. He's cheap to fit his equipment but 3-4 Lascannons his way means he's dead.

Just play Vanilla. Make a hodge podge of different chapters. Or chose a chapter color that is shared by many. DA raven wing and Salamanders are green. Space wolf are light blue/grey and ultra maines are blue. DA also has white death wing and White Scars are white...Blood Angels red death company are black with red Xs n maybe blend with black templar.

Or pic a color scheme that none of them use n use them as count as. U can even play chaos marines.

I say go Salamanders regardless, since you like their look and their lore.

You'll be painting and modeling your army far more than you'll be playing it. No reason to paint and model a faction you don't enjoy.

I chose not to do carcharodons because of the desperate allies thing. I eventually want to run some imperial knights.

I'm also tossing around the idea of imperial fists

The FW Imperial Knights just count as LOW slots, so that solves that issue you're worried about

I'm all for Salamanders. With pods, they are amazing. I personally think they're the best chapter, but I haven't played as often this edition. Vulkan is indeed a must, I think.

If you go Salamanders, you might want to check out Spellcrow.com. They have some awesome "Not Salamanders" bits to upgrade marines. I like some of them more than the FW ones.

Just search for Salamandra. They've got a ton of bits.

I've painted my Loyalists a generic Red, and get to play them as a number of different Second Founding successor chapters. Genesis Chapter for UM, Red Talons for IH, and Rampagers for WS.

There are many Successors that use a Silver metal scheme, or you can always use one of the Chapters unsure about their Primogenitors.

The beauty of Space Marines is that you can paint your army whatever color you want, call them a successor Chapter, and use whatever Chapter Tactics you want. Pick the color scheme you want and try out the different CT until you find the one you like. As for Salamanders in particular, as others have said, they are a very solid pick. Not the best CT in the codex, but not the worst either. I agree that Vulkan is required to see their full potential, but playing casually he's not quite as necessary. But a Salamander army loaded up with Melta and Flamers all in Drop Pods is a scary matchup for anyone. My local Salamanders player has given my Tau a run for their money many times.

I created my own chapter, The Thunder something or other, I forget. I painted them Jade green, an old Games Workshop colour from years ago, simply because it covered easily. White trim. Then used the Dark Angel rules for a while, then used the Blood Angel rules for a while, good times. I even used a mix of models from the different marine ranges
Don't tie yourself down, do what you enjoy.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

I have an old 2nd Ed Legion of the Damned army, my firet Space Marines (played Guard back in RT). As each new edition made playing my LotD as a stand alone army impossible, they became "Deathwatch" when paired with my GK or Sisters (3rd and 4th), "Wolves" when I was feeling feisty (3rd, 4th, and 5th), "Death Company" when they were a playable army (5th), and finally back to being LotD in 6th and 7th. Believe me when I say that having your own unique army gives you more options than playing a specific army.

Whatever you choose I would stay away from Iron Hands. They have only 1 thing going for them. That is a chapter master on a bike with powerfist/TH and either shield eternal or the better gorgon chain+lightning claw. If you do this you have to run with a command squad with apothecary. Other than that your chapter tactics suck more than a 2 dollar prostitute. Your entire uniqueness has been retconned away so you are worse wannabe ultramarines. No unique characters or units. And this particular bike build is not fluufy and you will be called a power gamer for taking the only effective thing you have with your chapter tactics. Oh, and expect to get crapped on by GW every edition until you are finally removed (most likely outcome). I say that as an Iron Hands player who loves the old fluff after learning about it and thinks the new stuff IH have is BS and has become extremely salty and disgruntled about it. If I didn't have so much work into the army and weren't so stubborn I would sell them or just shoot them.

They actually have a FW character and a full supplement. They're not junk.

As long as you have Vulkan and strategically choose which weapon to be master crafted, you're good. If you're going super competitive, White Scars and DA Ravenwing are the best.

Salamanders are mid tier Space Marines.

The FW character is garbage. The supplement is not very fluffy and very poorly written. Other than the gorgon chain the relics are mediocre at best. The supplement doesn't mesh very well with the current space marines codex and doesn't add much of anything worthwhile (arguably adds nothing). It certainly doesn't make the Iron Hands more like how the Iron Hands should be, in fact the ONLY reason to use it IS the Gorgon's Chain. And compared to just about every other space marine faction with the exception of Blood Angels they ARE junk. I know I play them. I play the supplement for the Gorgon Chain and that's it. I guess the Force weapon for Librarians is good. Not great but good. None of it compares to the boost White Scars just got for sure.
