Hi,
I'd like to have your opinion on a cover save for an Ironstrider Ballustarius. Please look at the image attached and tell me if it would get cover.
The rule states that 25% of the facing of the vehicle needs to be obscured. Looking at the tiny legs of the model, I don't think 25% of it is obscured. However, you could argue that ~20% of it is covered, so you could get a cover save to be fairplay.
But I don't think the model should get a cover save simply because ~40% of his height is obscured.
What do you think?
Thanks

God that's tough. In these situations, the best thing to do is be a good sport and let your opponent decide (even though they'll probably say its obscured). If neither of you can really choose, roll a d6. On a 4+ they're not obscured, and on a 3 or less they are. That's the best way to go when things are unclear.
EDIT: Personally, I'd say they were obscured. There's a lot of the model that's out of view.

Height x Width = Facing. So yes, 40% of the model's front face is obscured.

Yeah the D6 rule is always a good choice. On the attached image, I should have mentioned that I was talking about the middle Ironstrider.

Hmm I don't think that is right. But I may be wrong obviously.
Any other opinions?
Thanks

I'd say it's 25% of the actual model, and not an imaginary rectangle, as viewed from that facing. The photo above looks like it could go either way since most of the actual model is visible. I don't know if the legs account for 25% or not. I'd probably just give them the save. If it's too close to call, contesting it and asking for a 4+ roll feels like bad sportsmanship.

Having an imaginary rectangle benefits some model lines majorly, while others not so much.
We always play it as '25% of the actual model covered'.
In doubt, call over a neutral 3rd party to judge.
In general I concede these decisions to my opponent for quicker play.

I love these kind of rules, casually mentioning that you have to do something that would require some serious maths is one of the funniest things ever. By the way just calculate the surface area of these two complex shapes in your head to see if you get cover or not Lol. This is really hard to do In contrast to what the rules might want to believe for the last few editions. I might just write a program this weekend in order to do it for me :_P

For a walker like that the current rules kind of screw you, if you don't get a cover save you got no saves at all. However if you called me over to be an impartial third party judge, I would say no save.

Hi guys,
To sum it up, in order to get a cover save, it's really 25% of the actual model covered. In this particular case, while we wait for oldzoggy's program to calculate the covered %, let's says it's about 20% or 25% covered. In that case, a dice can be thrown to determine if a cover save is given or the shooter can give the save for good sportsmanship. A third party could also decide and it could go either way.
Thanks guys
Ash

If I were asked as a third party I would say no cover save because logically the guy shooting at it can see everything he would be wanting to aim at and hit.

This.
I just go with 25% of the silhouette, as the alternative is needlessly complex.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Those tau force fields come close I think . But lets keep it simple and call it obscured if you are behind transparent terrain.
