Hey,

I'm looking to get back into the hobby. I started about a year ago but didn't really enjoy playing my Chaos Space Marines so it put me off. I think i selected the wrong army at the time so I have been thinking about what I really want, and lo and behold... I can't decide!!!!

I like the idea of having an army of lots of big, scary models such as lots of Tyranid monstrous creatures with very few troops or Tau taking battlesuits and troops with Riptides/Ghostkeels etc.

Can anyone recommend what armies have some cool looking "larger" models and enough that can be made to be the centre of the army?

I'm not a big fan of vehicles either, I'm guessing this will limit my options when it comes to larger models but I just don't like playing with vehicles for some reason. Skimmers and walkers are okay but tanks etc. bore me to death.

Eldar Wraith units in general are at least decent, and all their vehicles are skimmers. The Wraithknight in particular is so good that it's almost stupid right now.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

You could do an Unbound list featuring several giant Walkers like a Riptide, Imperial Knight variants, a Wraithknight, etc.

If you don't like vehicles and want to run big models, you're pretty much left with only a couple option - tyranids and daemons. All other's large monsters look like vehicles. Even though the powerful ones have MC rules - just to be powerful on tabletop in later editions - they're still mostly vehicles fluffwise.

A passable-for-MC option are eldar with wraithknight spam but there are two problems here. First, they don't look like creatures, even though they're 'grown' in fluff. And the second one, they're cheeze.

Can easily build an all or almost all MC army from 'Nids (All big gribblies), Tau (Riptide, Ghostkeel, Stormsurge), Knights (Duh), Eldar (Wraithknight), Dark Eldar (Talos, Cronos), Mechanicus (Kastellans), Daemons (Greater deamons and Princes) and to a certain extent, grey knights (Dreadknight) and Necrons (C'Tan).

Each of those armies can be built entirely of, or spam to a large degree, the large mosterous creatures that you're after. Most even come with special rules for doing so (Riptide wing, corpsethief claw, Knight army etc). Eldar, DEldar, Tau and Necrons also have all, or virtually all, skimmers for their vehicles as well, so there's plenty of choice if you want to include some of those too.

Keep in mind that Monsterous creatures are quite good, so an army of them will be all but impossible for some people to play against, and certain builds (I'm looking at you 5 wraithknight list) will get you many a rude comment and refused games in many circles.

Tau also have Crisis Suits. They aren't MC but they are super good units while still retaining a low ish model count.

Check out some of the tau formations.

Specifically the Heavy Retribution Cadre. It's effectively the Imperial Knight Detachment with the ridiculously powerful Stormsurge and Ghostkeel suits.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

First question I always ask is what format you intend to to play, as that changes what giant nonsense you can run....

The Tau or Imperial Knights are what you want probably.

Helldrakes aren't bad either.

This only works if he isn't playing ITC.

The Orks have a Walker Formation that could be a fun idea to build around, add in an Unbound Stompa and you'll have the biggest big guy around.

Well, he said he doesn't like vehicles. Tau and knights don't cut it as organic dudes.

Pretty sure you can still build a decent Wraith-themed list in ITC even if you're only allowed one Wraithknight.

Also keep in mind the Cohort Cybernetica formation. 2 Kastellan Maniples and a Techpriest Dominus as a single unit. Incredible tough and very shooty though very slow and not particularly versatile, best backed up with a Skitarii Maniple. Absolutely mauls marines and are a pain for your opponent to shift (especially if you give your Dominus the IWND stick) but will struggle against 2+ saves and armour 12+ vehicles.
