Hi!

I am currently experimenting with shooty orks and am curious as to what you guys think of sticking lootas in a gun wagon (FW 60 point front armor 13, side 12 open topped transport) and having them fire out of that as opposed to being on the ground. This is however not just limited to Orks but instead all heavy weapon infantry guys as well. Would you ever considering sticking them in a vehicle to provide them with some solid protection or is it better to stick them in some cover and have them fire like that?

I have played two games so far with pure shooting orks and so far and saw my Lootas eat some enemy return fire and were very vunerable to all those who got close to them. I felt that perhaps putting them in a beefy vehicle could offer them protection from small arms thorugh medium arms (s7 glancing front armor on a 6) fire, but if it blew up then they would suffer the explosion which would kill roughly half inside. What do you guys think? Is the vehicle protection, but with the risk of being wrecked/exploding worth it to protect lootas or any long range heavy weapons squad in general?

It's a decent tactic, assuming an army has access to open-topped vehicles. In your case it's a good move imo, as it helps keep your Lootas alive a little while longer (just pray nobody rolls an explode! result). Other armies like Guard can't really use it that much, because we have little access to those kind of open topped transports.

Can't chimeras carry bulky models?

Chimeras aren't open-topped, so all of the heavy weapons can't fire out of it, just two.

Or if its a command squad, one can fire out.

I'm sure I have seen it on Frontline Gaming where some guy had heavy weapons team in that baneblade variant that is treated as open-topped. That is a good tactic.

With Orks I've seen a Battlewagon with a Mek kitted out with a Kustom Force Field and a squad of Lootas be pretty effective.

Make sure to give the Mek Mega-Armor. this makes the unit slow and purposeful so they can fire their heavy weapons at full BS even when the wagon moves.

And if you give him da lukky stikk, he can reroll his armor saves, so then when the wagon explodes you just put him in front to tank all the wounds.
Or you could save the points on the wagon and just have him in front of the unit to tank with his 2+ re-rollable armor saves. And they could still walk and shoot.

In 7th ed, wounds from Explodes results are randomly allocated. The MA Mek can't tank them.

I think he means the resulting shooting phase after the explosion...

I find someone shoots him with a lascannon and he fails the 5+ and dies. And I think the lucky stikk can only troll failed armor, not invulns.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Lucky stikk allows rerolls of failed to hit rolls, to wound rolls, or saving throws. Armor, invuln or cover saves.

Is this a thing? Does the unit actually become slow and purposeful for the purposes of firing the unit's guns, or is it just forced to move as a slow and purposeful unit because they have a single model that disallows them from moving normally? Since the individual models do not themselves have slow and purposeful, do the lootas still suffer the shooting penalty?

Does slow and purposeful confer, or does it just limit unit movement kinda like having an infantry model in a jump unit?

Both benefits and penalties from slow and purposeful are applied to the unit as long as at least 1 model in the unit has the rule, yes.

Jump Infantry is not itself limited in movement by an infantry model in the unit. "Jump unit" is the name of the overall unit type(which includes rules on the way we see it in datasheets as "jump infantry " or whatever else "jump X" happens to be written. "Jet-pack X" is the same). Just because the rule has the word unit does not mean it is speaking of units comprised only of Jump models(see the hyperbole of assault cannons and heavy flamers).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Yeah DLS allows rerolls of hits, wounds, and saving throws. It does not allow a reroll on FNP rolls though. However, what you do when a lone lascannon fires is just 2+ lookout sir that, and lose one loota. and when you say fails a 5+ save are you talking about cover? because Mega Armor does not give a 5+ Invuln like Termie armor does.

The 5+ he is talking about may be the Ork KFF

Oh yea!! That was the whole reason to take the Big Mek in the first place wasn't it? Haha,

But yes, in the cases of being fired on by ap2 weaponry, you just LoS those shots and hope the lootas make their 5+
