I know that hackneyed OSL is a point of derision amongst many these days, but I still submit this Y'vahra painted this morning. With my 3.5 year old on my lap the entire time, no less. #Daddydaughterpaintday

These guys take two hours to do, and are three shades above black primer on armor and hull, then three shades for each glow. Then (in this case) stenciled hexagons, followed by sponged metallics mixed with white. No wash stage due to the layers, so that saves you a ton of time. The base I just lay down rocks with thin CA glue with accelerant, so thats done in a flash as well. Then two layers of terrain color, a black wash (using a hairdryer to speed up), then elmers glues/water to lay down the leaves. As they dry I apply the tufts of grass, then hairdry it all and give it a coat of thin CA glue. Then a matte varnish, and you're done.

It looks great for tabletop play. And with a little one in your lap. Bravo.

Do you also you fine tip markers to get the black lining done? I only recently started using them and have had pretty good success and speed.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

The paint isn't thick? I suppose I can say that about the model. But, me being the author of a recent particular thread, I bet many can guess my feelings on the model. The color coordination is weird. His left arm in particular seems to have purple there for no reason. And several pieces of continuous armor seem to be colored differently for no reason. The shading seems just random.

Tabletop quality and props for doing it with an infant in your lap.

Resin Printer (minaitures) is a 4K printer with one of the largest build volumes available for a resin printer (192mm x 120mm x 245mm) with an amazing .01mm resolution! This professional printer is one of the best resin printers on the market!

FDM Printer (terrain) also has one of the largest build volumes available for an FDM printer (400mm x 400mm x 450mm) and has an amazing ,05mm build accuracy.

Really good stuff! Nice to see airbrushing applied to a somewhat more realistic approach.

I always find it ironic when people apply excessive criticism to creative works when they themselves are incapable of doing better (having had a glance through your gallery....) as if to say "doing it better is as simple as me pointing all this out". I don't know, maybe it's a defense mechanism to maintain a frail self-esteem.

I personally like the tone and textures of the mini, and in two hours none the less. Great job.

Whether or not a person is able to do better has absolutely no bearing on criticism being offered. I can't take professional-looking photographs, but that doesn't mean I can't critique Mapplethorpe's photos. I can't play football as well as I could in high school, let alone on an NFL level, but that doesn't mean I can critique the sport (damned Bengals... ) or players thereof.

Frail self-esteem, eh? Assumptions much? I'd say that the mere fact that he's uplopaded pictures for review to the public of Dakka, that in and of itself appears that he is proud of his work and feels good enough to post it. I only see a single completed model in your gallery. Does that mean you have a low self-esteem, too?

Some of the snottiest comments Ive ever seen on a painting thread, which is an impressive feat.

Love the hex camo thing going on. OSL is mostly understated (a good thing) I'd say the only nit pick I have with it is that the graduation on the legs is better done than the rest of the model.

I agree. Personally, I think this model is awesome. I love the base. I love the hex pattern stencil. I love the muted colors. I love the Tau emblems being very faded. I think this is an awesome model. My nitpick is the lighting around the different vents, the reddish light. I'm not sold on the authenticity. I don't think light would bleed over a 90° angle. Especially so in the two areas on either side of the upper chest. Those light sources are so recessed, there's no way that light would spill out to the sides like it is. Light doesn't bend. Having said that, I love the way the generator on the left arm looks.

All in all, I think this is a great model. It's shining spot for me, though, is that base. I love it. It's so understated and sparse. Plus, the sparing use of the autumn colors. It blends so well with the muted tones of the model. I can just picture this model as part of a larger force moving through a light forest in autumn. Many tall, thin threes who've shed their leaves in preparation for the oncoming winter. A hush over the landscape that's lightly broken by the light drone of grav-engines and the crunching of leaves and twigs of infantry as they approach the next contact with the enemy.

Did I mention that I like this base?

Hey thanks. I did not use markers, I think what youre seeing could be a function of the lighting and just built up layers.

No worries, although there is no purple on the model. It shouldnt be universally liked.

Im glad you like the base, in fact I think thats what most people end up saying they like about the stuff I post. Ive gotta start somewhere, ha

I love the subtle markings, and IMO that is much more likely in comparison to the cartoon like renditions GW puts out. Nothing wrong with a bright scheme either, but even in the brash 41st millennium one would think a touch of camouflage would go along way in tactical situations.

Anyone who has seen my Tyranid army knows I prefer muted colors. If I did Tau this is close to what I would do.

Thats simple stencil work, the paint is the highlight of the last mix on the armor so it blends more muted. One thing Ive done before is go back and free hand a highlight and shadow edge to create a quick 3D effect, but this was a speed
project.

When I said purple, this is what I meant.

Edit: My monitor may be off. I'm using my large TV to view this instead of my graphics tablet screen.

I think its a function of your monitor, but also the background used has a lot of purple and blue tones in it, which is coloring the grays.

Airbrushing is so easy it can be done while holding a baby Looks brilliant IMO. Some of the comments on here though 'People disagree with my post in P&M so I troll as many airbrushed model posts in showcase as possible'...

Yeah, I think some combination of the background and lighting is making it look kinda purple for some reason.

Anyway, I think the model's okay. I'm not a big fan of excessive airbrushed OSL effects either, but I think the ones on this model are nice. The only thing I disagree with is all the red on it. I dunno why, it's just always been a pet peeve of mine when I see people add glow to intakes like that, because realistically there shouldn't be a glow coming out of the intake; if it was coming out of the back of a vent and intended to look like an afterburner or something, maybe, but when there's a glow coming out of the air intake it just makes me think the Tau are sticking LED's behind them, like tuners/modded cars. I guess the decision was made because otherwise there wouldn't be much color on the model and it might look a bit "boring" if they were just painted flat black. That's a personal preference though, not saying it's ugly or "wrong" by any means.

Well I guess I am kinda saying it's "wrong" but you know what I mean. lol

I wouldn't say hackneyed OSL, it only detracts when its over done for a wow factor as it's a cheap way to distract from stuff. But, what you've done is put it in the right places to help the model overall pop instead. It's balanced out in all the right places and fits well making a great looking model.
