Corsair Barons have this rule:

"Tyrant: A Corsair Baron must be assigned to a friendly Troops or Elites unit chosen from the Eldar Corsairs army list at the start of the game and may not leave this unit during play. If using the Corsair Raiders Force Organization Chart, a Corsair Baron must be assigned to a unit chosen from the same Coterie. No more than one Corsair Baron may be assigned to any single unit, and a Cloud Dancer Baron may only be assigned to a Cloud Dancer unit."

Here's my question, what happens if you can't assign a Baron to a unit? e.g. you have a Cloud Dancer Baron in a Coterie, but no units of Cloud Dancers in that Coterie for him to join?

Okay, that's fine. I was more wondering if you simply weren't allowed to build a list where this was possible.

I would say you're not allowed to take the model in your list unless he can be assigned so as to follow his rules. Taking him alone would be a violation of his rules and so would need to be a house rule.

the model must be assigned to an unit, if you do not assign it to an unit you have not followed the must.

I agree with Kriswall, you have to take an unit to assign him to.

The rule with must, must be followed. Not following it by anyway, is not following it.

I am also leaning towards not being allowed to take him at the list-building stage if you cannot assign him to a unit.

It seems weird, but it wouldn't be the first time ForgeWorld has made rules that affect the list building stage, or vica versa (see IA:13's Technomancer rule, where your Sorcerer MUST roll on the Malefic table to unlock more than one Relic vehicle (one roll or all of them? It doesn't say))
