Space Hulk 1st Edition, with Genestealer and Deathwing add-ons that allowed for real metal terminators and genestealer hybrids, as well as Imperial vs Chaos. After playing games with those rules, it was ready to move on to a bigger table and use the same minis.
Yes, I still mourn the loss of Genestealer Cult lists, I had such a good Armoured Limo for my 4th gen Magus (genestealer generation, not Warhammer rules version.)

There really wasn't one, I always wanted to play with minis when I was little, and some people in middle school were talking about this game where you field armies of minis and play. So I just had to have it, because I loved Starcraft and this in theory combined that with minis.
My first box of models was a group of Necron Warriors, but then I swapped to Chaos because I could be either CSM or regular SM if I modeled things more conservatively.
So yea, no one model, but rather the idea of a game like 40k, though it didn't hurt that there were tons of cool minis in the game and I kept bouncing between all of them, having some Nids, Necrons, Marines of both flavours, and so much more by the end of it. Though had it not been for the game aspect, I'd have never gotten into it, nor would I have returned recently.

The 2nd edition box set, followed by a perusal of a catalog that had the original Asmodai in it (who I think stands up to the new version even now!)
