It's perfectly legitimate and I'd definitely give you a game.
But i find the old models to be very ugly, so I wouldn't want to play it too many times for that reason.

Do you not like the Mk. VI armor, or something else about the scuplts? You can make old school beakies out of the modern tactical squad box; it’s got a full suit of Mk. VI in there. They fit in reasonably well with the old ones. I needed a new heavy and sarge for one of my RTB01 squads:

Id like to see exactly what OP is working with.
Like I said, I'll give anyone a game, but my favorite opponents have beautifully painted up to date armies.
The old school lower quality sculpts don't have as much charm for me, since I don't have the nostalgia for it and I'm always excited about what's new. I actually wish that gws would redo the whole space marine line in true scale with age of sigmar quality sculpts (aka the only good thing about sigmar). I'd throw my 3k of fists in a box in the attic and start over.

i've a heap that I'm waiting on finding time to build as Night Lords, or some other chaosy thing when they do come out with proper chapter specific things. I think from a chaos point of view they're perfect for the idea of scavenging old equipment.
And the old Rhino's still look great! I've got one for my thousand son's/Nightlords that I've based to be the right hight and footprint. It's not exact, but gives you the right idea. It's my favourite rhino now as it fits the VotLW idea.
Definitely let it play, totally legitimate. Just a shame they're that little bit smaller than the newer figures. but very customisable if you want to kitbash.

Good on you, Grumzimus!
Basing tanks is something that needs to be done more! It really helps them look a closer scale to the models, especially those old Tardis Rhinos!

Scale creep is an issue. The basic marines it’s not that bad. Part of it is the crouching stance of the old RTB01’s, but they are smaller. Rhinos is minor, but noticeable. But I just painted my first modern terminator, and ho boy, big difference. And not just the base size:
Just a subtle change there...

I'd be perfectly fine with it. Always nice to see beakies.

I guess not everyone gets an equal hit from the old geneseed growthspurts!
I always imagine the transformation process affects different aspirants in different degrees. Some remain largely human, just with a bunch of redundant systems implanted. Some are much more strongly affected, and become almost like mini Primarchs (like Abaddon).
At the very least the old marine terminator models are the fight scale for unaugmented inquisitors in terminator armour now.
As for my Abaddon? Well I like to think he isn't small, he is just a long way away :p.
